Cheers, friend. I remember watching my sister go through the process recently and everything I put into making it all work (parents weren't involved). You're an awesome parent for doing all this. I hope he finds a place he loves! Best wishes this coming cycle.

Never thought watching American TV would come in this handy one day, but it's been a huge help while planning my lessons about immigration at the US-Mexican border and the changes under Trump. I even get to watch and discuss Jim Jefferies (though of course I have to make sure it's a rather tame segment) and clips from John Oliver.

Honestly, while the class is a damn chaotic bunch, it's my kind of chaos. I'm really coming to like these little bastards. I'll actually miss them once the internship is over. Anyway, today I'll tell them that we're going to write a one page essay just to see their horrified faces and then proceed with interpreting caricatures and class discussions instead.

    One page...

I remember when one page terrified me. I still have college freshmen who freak out when they have to write 3 pages..

I’m like...oh honey it only gets worse.

Past two years I’ve averaged between 50-60 pages a semester.

And just as I write that, I go on and drive the last 30 minutes of my 90 minutes session off a cliff. The text was too complex, the task too confused, and then there's me, getting flustered because no one is answering my questions and they're all looking at me like I've just told them I banged their grandmas. Then again, the first 60 minutes went alright. But shit, I've got a new definition for uncomfortable after the last 30 I spent in that classroom.

It's over for today, though. Now I'll drink a couple gin tonics and then tomorrow I'm going to analyse that clusterfuck and see what went wrong, and then I'll do my hardest to do better on Friday.

@Eilyfe the "I know this, why can't you understand it?" fallacy. Hard to imagine not having some information once you have it.

I have a student who frustrates me constantly because in his grade he should know the difference between direct and reported speech, but I have to remember that not everyone had the interest in English I did at X age. You've had a stumble--take the lesson to heart and always keep it in mind, you'll do better next time.

He said, "I am the greatest." - direct speech

He said that he was the greatest. - reported speech (marked by a tense shift from present to past)

We teach that as "active vs. passive" voice here. Probably the biggest thing I have to drill in my college freshman's head. It's ingrained in them from like elementary school and never corrected by teachers...

Have also heard direct/indirect. (Act/Pass is slightly diff, Revan's right.)

Stumbles happen. You're comparatively new, it's by all info you've shared a tricky class, and your teaching honeymoon is nearly over. Now's when they start to test boundaries - so be prepared* for them to throw things your way. (Figuratively. Usually.) Plus you don't know them that well, so misjudging skill level happens.

*I'd advise against the fratricide/regicide though.

Interesting, just never taught the terms, being a native speaker.

    That's not the active/passive.

    Active: John shot Mark.
Passive: Mark was shot by John.

TOMD: A good day in the college search saga: Sprog is thoroughly enamored of Columbia and is stoked to apply. (And, judging from his test scores, mildly competitive.)

We were, yes. Collegeing and stuff.

Princeton is tomorrow. I sort of loathe Princeton, mostly because of bad experiences with their alumni (and maybe a teensy bit because they rejected my application back in the day), but will go in with an open mind.

We won't disown him if he chooses and gets in. We'll just move all his stuff to a storage locker and change the locks on the house.

The shift between present tense to past tense in papers is active vs. passive. That is literally what @Eilyfe described.

...No, it's not. Tense doesn't have anything to do with voice.

Both great schools. I like Columbia, but the off-campus housing up there is awful (and very expensive). Something to consider.

    Harsh.
