TOMD: So I'm about halfway through my internship and wasn't feeling great about it. The team I'm on handles a great number of internal tools and it felt like I wasn't really able to get a handle on things and make something that matters.

But today during our daily meeting someone mentioned that a tool I'd made was making their life way nicer, the manager responded by saying it I could pretty much call in sick for the rest of the summer and they'd still remember me fondly just for that, and then someone else joked that it was more than any of their previous interns had done.

So yeah, apparently getting onboarded with this team is just always sort of a very slow-moving nightmare and I'm doing just fine. Felt pretty great, not gonna lie.

Yup, now you’ll be super motivated to keep putting your best effort forth to impress the people who aren’t paying you for the work you do!

I’m assuming this is an unpaid internship.

Lol no, it's a software engineering internship. I'm being compensated quite well for my time.

The manager has good motivation to be nice since they're investing a summer into essentially training me, so converting me would be a win for the team overall, but the guy who started the compliments is a generally grouchy guy who's been with the company a long time so I doubt he has that sort of thing in mind.

TOMD: You can't ask why, but I need to source this train set - https://www.hobbylandaustralia.com.au/shop/trains/hornby/hornby-flight-of-the-mallard-train-set-html/https://www.hobbylandaustralia.com..../hornby-flight-of-the-mallard-train-set-html/

Every where I've looked has been unavailable - if DLP can source me one, I will pay handsomely.

....I mean, like, I'll owe you one. Write you a story or something. Suck yo dick. Whatevs.

    Seriously, train me.

TOMD: Took a four hour long, unnecessarily tedious, International Accounting test. It was open note, open book, and multiple choice. But every single fucking question was about some obscure clarifying statement that nobody would ever write in their notes or ever think to study, about a definition where a single word was changed in the answers, or a math problem that never had an analogue appear in the homework or the end of chapter problems and was only done in text as a mostly unrelated scenario.

My whole class was in to take the test and I was one of the first 5 out.

TL;DR: Fuck accountants. Fuck all of you and everything you’ve ever done.

Probably a retirement gift for Joe's mentor or something.

You can take your reasonable explanation and shove it.

TOMD: This morning, I spent an inordinate amount of time retrieving some measuring spoons from where they'd fallen behind the stove. Much paperclip and string engineering was involved.

... Did you not want to pull the oven out? They slide in and out pretty easy these days. Unless its a built in. But then you wouldn't have shit falling behind built-ins.

Tried that, but it wasn't very easy to move. In the end, my improvised fish-hook-on-a-line strategy won the day.
