Welcome to the ranks of the truly overpaid. People, we are sorry your taxes pay us to do what little we can accomplish as federal employees. :)

Piggybacking on what Eilyfe said (sans dildos), you should also try weightlifting gloves with straps. You can wrap them around the bar a bit, and it takes a ton of strain off your hands and lets you concentrate on the muscles you're trying to work.

TOMD: Today I had the first major part of my Staatsexamensprüfung to become a teacher: a one hour German oral exam spanning linguistics and literature with several topics like polit-linguistics, Brecht's epic theatre, the Sturm & Drang and German classical literature. After an harrowing sixty minutes, I emerged with a 1.0 which, added to my other grades in German, results in a 1.1 overall. Thus I'm an utter and complete baller.

Now I've got to eat my victory kebab.

Congratulations! Did you set fire to a copy of your reading list after you were done? I hear that can be cathartic. :D

Not yet. I'll make a big bonfire when I'm through with English and didactics as well.

Congrats man! What's the grading scale for this? You seem quite happy but I have no context.

Last month was tough for me. I had a full year research paper that I was struggling to pull together, and in the process retreated from life to a large degree - stopped socialising, exercising, sleep and meal schedule got out of whack. Ended up needing a week extension and help from family to get it out the door - and pretty proud of it, too.

The week since then has been a blast. I've made a real effort to seriously engage, reach out to people, and have had some deep conversations. It's been really, really nice. I've also done a ton of life admin and sorted everything well for Summer.

But now I have exams, and I just can't summon the effort. I've never relied on too much study, and grades don't matter a heck of a lot, as I have a full time job lined up. I want things to turn out well, but I'd rather savour time with people who are leaving soon, and staying cooped up some more kind of reminds me of last month.

I will do some. It's just hard to feel motivated.

1.0 is the best you can get; 4.0 is the worst you can get.

Good job! Sounds like you put in some major effort to get your grade!

Well done on getting your paper in, but more congrats on starting to get your life back in order. Its easy to let things slide when you've a big piece of work, but its tougher to get your life back to together after that.

Saw this before posting. Nice one on getting near the top grade. Awesome congratulations!

TOMD: Got a pass for the Bangalore Literature Festival from Ramachandra Guha (an Indian historian of great repute) himself. He's hosting some people I utterly love: Ed Luce and Srinath Raghavan. Unfortunately, my PhD qualifier is in a month, and I've got little time for movement till then. And I know that if I go to the festival, I won't come back till tomorrow. So I had to turn him down. FML.

I'm sorry to hear that. We've also lost a family member to cancer this year. I hope your relative had a long and prosperous life.

The one bit of advise I will give that almost ruined my wedding.

Agree beforehand what time you want to leave, agree to a little wiggle room and agree to it.

I wanted to leave at 1am, she wanted to stay until everyone left, around 4. We agreed until 2am.

Night came, 2am along, and nothing, 3 nothing. I can’t think about our wedding with our anger our night became hers and she lied to me with in hours of being married.

    You okay dude?

What venues are these that people are allowed to stay until 4am? For that matter, how did you guys know that the guests would be leaving at 4?

@Erotic Adventures of S good stuff. We’ve been doing premarital counseling and they’ve done a great job of helping us work through those things.

Also realistic expectations regarding sex is a good thing.

Same for finances. We’ve covered a lot of good stuff in those sessions that will have a solid foundation for later.

Had a red truck speed in front of me an hour ago on a merge lane while riding the motorcycle. Started to fishtail while braking and got catapulted over the handlebars into the road. Took a tumble for a dozen feet and hit some curb with my head, but had my helmet and leather coat on so it's mostly some meaty chunks of my hand missing.

As motorcycle crashes go, I'm glad it was pretty uneventful. Could have been a lot worse.
