So can anyone recommend any fics where Dumbledore isnt manipulative, or evil, or even absent minded but instead takes Harry under his wing? You know...training, or even adoption.

I'd like a change of pace for once.

I wrote a novel once where a competent Dumbledore rescues Harry after 3rd year and proceeds to train him up. Dumbledore is not evil per se, but he is somewhat more manipulative than in canon. Probably not what you're looking for.

I know it's breaking tradition in this thread, but I'd recommend sib's fic, Awakening Power. It's dated now (2004 publication date) and it's Harry/Ginny, but I think it's one of the readable Harry/Ginny stories out there. Aside from the adoption thing, it has a Dumbledore who matches exactly what you're asking for. (Abraxan's fics also have such a Dumbledore--Harry even goes so far as to adopt him into their family as an honorary grandfather--but I find her stuff unbearable).

OP: I've seen a few stories like that, but I can't quite remember the names off the top of my head. I'll take a look around and post if I can find them again.

grand griffon has a completed Harry apprentices to Dumbledore fic and unfinished sequel. It was last updated in '04, so if you can forgive a lot due to its age... its still pretty cliched.

I'm remembering a few other really old ones that were never completed and doubtfully aged well too. Don't think I'd "recommend" any of them.

 

I thought the story that Andro tried to link was pretty good. But the author's habit of deleting it periodically is extremely irritating.

There was also a fic called Web Of Lies or something like that, where Post-GoF Harry masquerades as a first year Ravenclaw. Don't have it bookmarked unfortunately though, didn't like it all that much.

I've also got a mediocre Post-OoTP AU on Alerts, which contains a non-manipulative!Dumbledore, but doesn't deviate much from the Indy!Harry formula otherwise. I can try to dig it up, if you still want?
