The History Channel just put out a series that looks at historically important military campaigns in ancient times. Their first episode looked at Hannibal's campaign against Rome, their second the "bloody" history of the Bible's King David.

Now, I'm not a military history buff. I don't particularly care about double envelopment tactics, or where significant battles took place... but the History Channel really has made looking at these events fascinating and interesting.

Whether or not time has occluded aspects of these events is a moot point: it's how we understand them today, and as a writer, it's inspiring for strategy and military actions in fiction.
