I've been half meaning to start this for a while now, mostly since I'm bored and want stuff to read. If people think this doesn't belong here, feel free to delete it, but with the DLP Directions thread talking about branching out I thought this was a good start. Next to For Review and WbA, Unrecommended is one of my favorite things on the site.

Potential (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-21613/ShayneT+Potential.htm) by ShayneT
Summary: Lieutenant Jennifer Hailey had dreamed about monsters long before joining Stargate Command. Beginning with the rain of fire in Los Angeles, she discovers those dreams are true.

Despite various annoyances and what I half remember to be a slow start, it has some fairly interesting ideas in it and has gotten rather engaging lately. It doesn't paint an unrealistically pretty picture of either the SGC or the Buffy gang (both have their problems and can suffer from curbstomp or a case of the stupids), and for that it beats out most of its fellow crosses with a stick. Update rate has been fairly good if sporadic at times.

I like this thread. Here's one for the mix.

The Journeyverse (http://www.grandt.com/Journey/stories)

As Kens describes it, its the Junkfood of fanfics. It's a buffy/pretty much everything xover. It's ridiculously long, and not all the stories are written by the same guy, Tenhawk. I personally haven't read the others ,but the ones i have read, which are mostly TEhawk's are pretty damn good. In a guilty pleasure sort of fashion. The Universe becomes pretty fleshed out and good all around. I'm on my third read through of it now.

It's worth giving it a try. Especially make sure that you get to year zero. The transition there really allows for a lot of fun stuff. Kens should probably come and give a proper description of it, because it is that good.

Potential is really quite good as well, I haven't caught up on the latest chapters however.

Re: Potential

It's pretty damn enjoyable. I definitely like the character of Lt. Hailey. I especially like how ShayneT (the author) tends to follow the rules of canon (in what a character can or can't do) but is willing to throw the specific events of canon out the window in order to tell a good story. This is probably my favorite Battle of Sunnydale story that I've read.

Re: Journeyverse

This is THE guilty-pleasure story/series for me. Let me start with the negatives. Grammar imperfect. Will always be unfinished. Near God!Xander. However, it is extremely entertaining.

It is the best BtVS/SG-1/Aliens/Predator/Independence Day/Lethal Weapon/Charlie's Angels/Jack Ryan-verse/True Lies/Pretender/Crow/Charmed/Hercules/Xena/Atlantis:The Lost Empire/The Shadow/Magnificent Seven/Tomb Raider/Highlander/Knight Rider and who the fuck knows what-else crossover ever. Thankfully it is the only crossover to this degree that I am aware of.

It's silly and preachy - but there are definitely some fun chapters. Word of warning though - not every chapter is written by Tenhawk - and even with all the named characters there are still OCs. I think. It is possible that every character is from a fandom, and that I'm just not aware of all of them.

Journeyverse is fanfiction junkfood. It's bad for you - but it's oh so fun to read.

Basically an exploration on how Young!Buffy might have reacted if confronted by the events of seasons six and seven.

AU Naruto is called back to his village by the Yondaime, but relations between them are frigid. Yet father and son will have to learn to get along if Konoha is to survive the next great war. Features semi-super! Naruto. No foreseeable pairings.
Naruto - Fiction Rated: M - English - General - Chapters: 9 - Words: 41,900 - Reviews: 321 - Updated: 2-10-10 - Published: 7-20-09 - - Naruto U./Minato N.

The beginning is rather sub-part, honestly. There are too many page breaks for the length of the chapters, and Naruto's wangst is strong.

However, as it progresses the chapter length increases, Naruto's wangst is tone down, and the relationship between Naruto and his father actually gains relevance beyond one-sided hate. If he keeps it up, the could be one of my most anticipated updates. The page breaks still suck though.

Originally started as a one-shot, I enjoyed the dark aspect of Naruto. Naturally, the idea is not new and since it's a continued one-shot, it's doesn't seem to have a direction. Plus, he hasn't updated in a year.

The container is an OC female, but was given Naruto's canon story and personality while Naruto himself, being raised by the disgraced 4th Hokage, comes out different. So it's kind of a fem!Naruto/Naruto fic (that's not confirmed, though). Plus, the guy hasn't updated in one and half years.

A bizarre one-shot from the chick who brought you The Ghost and the Darkness and Dancing with Demons. Suicide would turn many here off, but it's for a better reason than 'Boohoo, my life sucks'. I don't think I can trust myself to put it into words that would do it justice. And I mean that in a bad way. This fic definitely falls into the "barely readable" end of the spectrum. It kind of has to be read firsthand to be believed.

Not the most glamorous first post, but ^ didn't quite cover this fic in all its glory:

John sat down on the edge of the fountain, taking a drink of his mead. Glancing around he spotted Tsu'Tey mingling with another Na'vi he didn't recognize.

He heard someone sitting down beside him, and knew instinctively who it was, "Long time no see Brother."
Benjamin Shepard grinned, "Sharp as ever John. How does it feel to have saved the Galaxy?"
John shrugged, "Honestly, it feels like I need a vacation."

This is a fantastic story. I would say that it's worth more than almost rec'd. My beef with it is that it's so short, and Hobbes doesn't make an appearance till the latest chapter. Fullmetal Alchemist -- an "almost good" recommendation. It's a one-shot. I'm reading through a couple of others right now so I might edit this post to include them if any others meet the "almost good" criteria.

Masking the Symptoms (http://www.phoenixdawn.com/fic/fma/masking.html) -- One shot. Early mission that Mustang sent Ed and Al on. Ed got sick.

Full Circle (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2783898/1/Full_Circle) -- This was good until it turned into Slash unexpectedly. Pity it's the only remotely well written one I've tried so far. After the end of the 2003 anime Ed went somewhere for 4 years then ended up back in Resembool (all that is covered in chapter 1 so it gets away from OCs quickly). It's not good enough to make up for the inclusion of slash/angst though. Damnit.

One of the posts up there mentioned "Redivivus", in Death Note catagory. I personally see that as a 5-star fic, and whenever it's updated (once in the last year, I believe) I can't wait to read it. Probably because of the lack of non-slash fics that aren't angst in that section, but oh well. Only a couple of others in the Death Note section are any good, imo.

I really enjoyed this one. It starts out a little angsty, but after the first couple of chapters the drama is dialed down and the action/adventure is dialed up.

Eva and Tolkien (http://forums.spacebattles.com/showthread.php?t=173331) by John Biles
Fandoms: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tolkien (Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion)
Length: Estimated 100,000 words + (it's in snippet form spread out over 30 pages on Spacebattles)
Status: WIP

There isn't even a title for this story, let alone a summary. That said, the premise of this story is that in September of 2000, something stole Venus, screwing with the Earth's orbit, and awakening creatures long dormant beneath the surface of the Earth. Now in 2014, behemoths are attacking the surviving humans.

Pros: To me, almost perfect blending of the Evangelion and Tolkien fandoms. The characters of NGE are mostly in character (with a few logical alterations), and the giant robots (known as Rangers) make sense as they fight off the Lieutenants of Morgoth. Setting the story in Germany really works with the whole Tolkien fandom. The OCs to me contribute to the story.

Cons: There are two big cons for me. The biggest is that I've read the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion, but I can't help but feel that I'm missing lots of references. Especially in regard to Silmarillion. The other major flaw is the characterization of Gendo. While other characters, such as Shinji are portrayed differently (such as the fact that since his introduction to NERV is so ridiculous, he's convinced that the whole experience is an incredible dream), Gendo just seems off. Right now he seems more of a jester than an evil scheming bastard than he is in canon.

Summary: Enjoyable read and updated regularly. Plus, the main characters seem to be wearing Rings of Power...

Tentative 4/5 to 5/5. I won't officially rate this or post this For Review until it's no longer posted in snippet form.

Sometimes when you get a mysterious death, you need to send in a specialist. When that specialist is Harry Dresden, and he's sent to looking into the goings on of Tokyo-3, there's no telling what might happen.

When I first saw this I was thinking "The hell? How can you cross this two universes?" but I checked it. And it's... bland. The writings is mediocre and doesn't pull you in. It feels rushed. And the cardinal sins - turning Bob into otaku, Dresden being able to almost kill an Angel with deus ex machina item and Lara and Nicodemus being members of SEELE.

There is only one IMO interesting concept - NeverWas - The Wastelands of Nevernever. Basically, everything gone downhill in Nevernever after Second Impact.

Overall, guilty pleasure nothing more.

This thread should not die!

I've been on a Ranma and a Naruto binge for a bit now, and eventually I did the dumb thing and combined the two. Here's some of the decent stuff that I found:

Son of the White Fang (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5182467/1/Son_of_the_White_Fang) » (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5182467/2/Son_of_the_White_Fang) reviews (http://www.fanfiction.net/r/5182467/) Kakashi has strange dreams - sometimes about a teenage boy and other times about a teenage girl. It looks like it could be good, and the writing is solid, so I'm following it with the hopes that it'll continue and be epic.

Ranma and Genma get lost looking for Jusenkyo and instead end up in the Land of Fire. Hilarity ensues. Only Almost Recced as it isn't very long yet.

I don't normally recommend stories, but Reap the Whirlwind (Naruto) (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6871246/2/) by Ozzallos is fairly good so far, in my opinion.

It's a time travel story where 26-year-old Naruto somehow ends up in the past, but fortunately it avoids the common "sticking close to the canon events" and "unstoppable future knowledge" potholes that so many of the genre contain.

It's only almost recommended because it's only two chapters in and it contains a severe case of "avenger-Sasuke" who's willing to kill Sakura for extra training, amongst other minor annoyances.

Fairly enjoyable so far if you're into the genre, so depending on how the future chapters it might eventually be a good fit for the somewhat neglected Other Fandoms library.

Maybe.

I don't normally recommend stories, but Reap the Whirlwind (Naruto) (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6871246/2/) by Ozzallos is fairly good so far, in my opinion.

It's definitely too early to rate this fic in a proper review thread, and it's not because of its length. It's because it's a fic by Ozzallos.

by Ozzallos
Ozzallos

If you don't know the name, then learn it now. Ozzallos can write decently, but his main gimmick is turning his male protagonists into women and then having them accept their "feminine side". He does this again and again and again with just about every fic.

After reading the first chapter of "Reap the Whirlwind", I thought that Ozzallos might finally be writing a straight fic of good quality, but then the second chapter was released. Did you notice the final paragraph of the last scene in ch2?

"I'm Naruto Uzumaki…" She replied. Kakashi blinked. Yugao did as well, though her reaction was largely concealed by her mask as the young woman's appearance suddenly clicked. "…And we'll be kicking some ass together."

It looks like fem!Naruto is going on a lengthy away mission with Kakashi and Yugao, and the author has given us a contrived reason for Naruto to be female for the entire duration. Naruto could have been henge'd or masked as anyone for the mission, but no, Ozzallos demands that his male leads learn to love being women, so Naruto's now going to be Naruko.

This was shaping up to be a pretty good fic until that scene indicated the direction the story is likely to be taking from now on. Maybe Ozzallos can redeem this. I've liked a few of his other stories, even with the feminised male leads, so I'm waiting for ch3, but I think I'll be disappointed.

Never played the game, but it feels like it might be following the plot pretty closely, which would obviously be a turn off if you played the game. Otherwise its pretty much what you'd expect with some fairly comedic moments: nothing special, but a decent time waster.

Legend (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-24717/ShayneT+Legend.htm) Trapped by an alien collector, Lieutenant Commander Data discovers an early 21st century android excavated from the ruins of Sunnydale and a capsule containing the frozen body of one of the Eugenic wars most notorious figures...Buffy Summers.

Surprising to see ShayneT writing again, he's wrote a couple fun BtVS crossovers last year in Smallville Glory (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-21319/ShayneT+Smallville+Glory.htm) and Potential (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-21613/ShayneT+Potential.htm), and even if his writing isn't the highest caliber he has a high update rate and tends to complete his stories. So far it's been a bit angsty, but with the Buffybot and Data in hand and ShayneT at the wheel I'd be surprised if it turned into a train wreck.

Bump because I've found two fics that while awesome don't really fit into the library quite yet.

If This is a Pokeman (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6832760/1/If_This_Is_bA_b_bPokeman_b) by chutup:

I honestly have no idea what is going on with the story. It seems like some kind of Pokemon war fic but something about it just hooks you in and leaves you wanting more. It's rather dark and some of the lines in there are epic and despite it only being six chapters and 8,000 words long you'll still enjoy every second of it.

3.5/5 IMO.

Game Freeze (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6040113/1/Game_Freeze) by Nagashizuri

A guilty pleasure fic at its best. In short it's a crackfic that takes itself seriously. Or maybe it's a serious fic that likes to make fun of itself? And neither of them should work but somehow this does.

The first few chapters start off like a lot of crappy Pokemon fics just without the crappiness: Pointing out stupid things about the games and just poking fun at Pokemon in general. This doesn't mean that it's unenjoyable. Quite the opposite.

Around chapter four or five is where the real story starts and shit starts to go down. from there on out expect it to get progressively darker while still keeping the 'WTF LOL?' tone of the story.

A solid 4/5 from me.

And if you do read either of them, drop the guys a review. the first one especially needs them.

Between worlds (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5681641/1/Between_worlds)

and its sequel

Tiger's Hunt (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6087648/1/Tigers_Hunt)

It's quite a massive story (1 million words atm), and personally I like it a lot. However, I don't really have a clue how it compares to other Avatar fanfics, I haven't read any other ones. Between worlds falls into a hole somewhere around chapter 20-30 and at that point I personally had the feeling as if it was some kind of soap with Na'vi, IIRC, but otherwise it's quite solid and enjoyable. The author has a very nice and regular update rate, too, with sometimes seriously massive chapters.

I don't read much in other fandoms, but this one sticks out in my memory:

Rewrite (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3220437/1/Rewrite) - Reviews - L x Misa. A moment in time. A chance meeting. Fate turned upside down. Death Note - Rated: T - English - Romance/Drama - Chapters: 28 - Words: 85,755 - Reviews: 1679 - Updated: 12-31-09 - Published: 10-29-06 - L & Misa A. Technically this is a romance fic. Technically. And it has a shitty summary. But it has a lot going for it. For one, it's not fluff. It's also extremely well-written. It manages to recreate the tense atmosphere and intrigue of the original Death Note. It's not slash, which is unusual in itself for a DN fanfic - the pairing is L/Misa with a touch of Light/Misa. And best of all, L, Light and Misa are all in character - but despite this, the author somehow makes Misa interesting, even as the main character.

I'd give it a 4/5 based on characterization and writing quality alone. Unfortunately, it's unfinished and appears to be abandoned.

Northern Star (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6478556/1/Northern_Star) by Hanna Sedai (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2320439/Hanna_Sedai/) (Robin, Slade, Batman, T, Words: 274,758, Complete)
Life as Slade's apprentice is hard for Robin, but even harder for those trying to save him. Murders, schemes and hatred flourishes as the Titans, Batman, and the JLA struggle to help him. Meanwhile, Slade has a nefarious plan in mind for the Batman...

This is one of my favourite Teen Titans fanfics, but I wasn't sure how DLP would take it, considering that most of the action is psychological and Slade-mindscrewing-and/or-kicking-the-crap-out-of-Robin. However, the characterisation of Slade is pitch-perfect, while Robin is suitably angsty. He doesn't lose his resourceful sneakiness, though. And he does gain a dark, snarky sense of humour later on (although after he gets over the angst, which takes a looooong time...)

I'd give it a 4.5/5, although many people in DLP are more likely to give it 3.

In my recent search for any good Kakashi fics, I ran across a trilogy of stories that I would "almost" recommend.

'A Personal Matter (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3777014/1/A_Personal_Matter)' is the first one. Official description is "Two missions with drastic consequences. Worlds connect, destinies unravel, and nothing will ever be the same. HPxNTO crossover like you've never seen! Set pre series Harry Potter and Kakashi Gaiden Naruto."

Basically a 6-year old Harry Potter, who had been living with the Dursley family, ends up in Konoha when they're murdered by Death Eaters. There is some hand-wavy argument about a lot of stuff, but in the end somehow or other Hatake Sarumo knocked up Lily, so Harry is his son.

When he shows up in Konoha his half-brother Kakashi is around 12-13 and Harry doesn't speak their language, and Harry has been neglected in the past, so there is some extent of ... what do you call it, I mean, Minato tries to sort of be a father figure to Harry I guess. Kakashi is never gushy at least.

Anyway. It was good enough that I read through the entirety of it and the sequels, but I don't think it's DLPs style to the point that I could put it up in For Review.

The sequel has Harry around 13 years old and a Genin. Kakashi by this point is around 19 and in ANBU. Dumbledore kidnaps Harry, and accidentally Kakashi as well, and they end up having to hang around Hogwarts while Dumbledore tries to manipulate Harry into staying and getting rid of Voldemort somehow. This seems to have been more popular with readers, though I thought it was weak in some areas.

The third story, which isn't complete, has Harry back in Konoha and about 17 years old. He goes up for Sp. Jonin (the special moniker being for his skill with magic) and takes on a student -- and that's where it's at so far.

Harry is not, and never becomes, OP in these stories. Basically he can use magic but he's not that kickass at it, and the same is true for his Ninjutsu skills. He's like a jack of all trades in that he can do everything but he doesn't seem to excel at any of it.

Call it guilty pleasure reading if you must, because I enjoyed it. But I had to skip around and skim a few parts.

I liked very much idea, if only execution was a little better...
It's standard idea with sith!Naruto, but he isn't very powerful in force like it's in others fiction of this type. His power as a ninja on the other hand are pretty strong, but it's shown what a teacher and a little guidelines can do. It isn't some god-like Naruto, but realistic, capable and hard working little bad-ass Naruto. Give it a try! :D

^^
It is also the stupidest Sith that I've ever seen. For example - Naruto needs to kill discreetly a genin in order to secure a spot to that team. He manages to stealthily enter genin's apartment, incapitate him, extract all needed info along the ride from the helpless captive - all that remains is to kill him so there would be no tracing this back to Naruto. And then instead of simply breaking his neck, or slashing throat, or stabbing him in the head with kunai or thousand other generic methods he kills him with unique sword he himself crafted with Sith techniques. The exquisitely unique blade that was crafted in the forgery of the Tenten's father and that both of them seen and were extremely interested in. This mistake will eventually bite him in the ass royally.
Naruto regularly makes this kind of stupid mistakes that are visible immediately to the reader, and not in the hindsight as it should have been in the case of realistic mistakes.
And this guy was trained by a Darth Plagueis, the Master of the Darth Sidious, otherwise known as Emperor?

Here's two Ranma stories that I quite enjoyed. I consider them a solid good, but I don't know that they'd have a shot at the library for various reasons.

Ranma - Fiction Rated: K+ - English - Romance/Humor - Chapters: 4 - Words: 34,173 - Reviews: 239 - Updated: 2-10-07 - Published: 11-1-05

It's unfinished, and frankly unlikely to ever BE finished, but it's one of my favourite ranma-chan fics, and definitely my favourite non-cracky characterization of Kuno. But then, I'm an unabashed Ranma-chan (and Ozzallos) fan. Despite the sheer amount of trash the genre attract(s/ed).

SeaHorse (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5876464/1/SeaHorse) » by Vahn
The Ruler of the Sea, the Wild Stallion. What happens when the two meets? Oneshot Fic. This is my first serious attempt at a most unlikely pairing. Due to popular requests, Now with a Side-Story added to it.
Crossover - Sailor Moon & Ranma - Fiction Rated: T - English - Romance/Humor - Chapters: 2 - Words: 52,568 - Reviews: 186 - Updated: 5-12-10 - Published: 4-6-10 - Complete

It's a blantant ship/romance fic with very little to do with the plots of the series involved, but it's enjoyable for what it is: a romcom.

I finish with a Terminator:SCC fic:

The Secret Diary Of Cameron Baum (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4450093/1/The_Secret_Diary_Of_Cameron_Baum) » by Pjazz
Cameron keeps a secret and personal diary of her activities. Next chapter. John meets a man from Cameron's Past. And discovers he isn't the first to fall for the terminator.
Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles - Fiction Rated: K+ - English - Humor/Drama - Chapters: 49 - Words: 201,368 - Reviews: 1540 - Updated: 8-21-11 - Published: 8-5-08

This is one of the best "Cameron is more than just a machine/AI" stories I've seen. It starts to drag in the later chapters and begins to lose the something something of the earlier ones, but that's what happens when an author lets the fans talk them into continuing past their decided ending.

Title: Eagle's Fall
Author: CharNobyl
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Adventure / Sci-fi
DLP Category: Other Fandoms---> Misc---> Games
Status: Work in Progress. Last updated 9/09/11
Fandom: Mass Effect/Command and Conquer
Pairing: No romance to be seen so far.
Summary: Shanxi becomes the first human world since Earth to be invaded by hostile aliens. Outnumbered and reeling, the GDI troops dig in for war, hoping their trenches will not become their graves. The First Contact War, with GDI replacing the Systems Alliance.
LINK (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6965762/1/Eagles_Fall) I rated this 4/5.

Cons: The reason I took 1 point off was because of the author is always adding a comma before a contraction (Example: ",but" + ",and"). That was only part of it though. I noticed the fic appeals to your pride. Everyone likes to read stories about how a wounded soldier carried his unconscious teammates (One on each shoulder) 2 miles to an extraction point. What I am saying is that it has a feel of "Humans will always triumph because we be AWESUM.". It's minor but it's there. Author is somewhat prone to excessive description of military hardware but it's easily ignorable.

Pros: No major spelling errors and the fic is formatted correctly. At least as correct as FanFiction.net can make it. It's a good read if you enjoy heavy action, aliens, explosions and Sci-fi. Battles are intense and fun to read. Characterization of developing characters is slow but believable. Thoughts?

EDIT: Merged with "Almost recommendable" on request of the poster.

Ashes of the Past (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7262793/1/Ashes_of_the_Past), by Saphroneth

One of the only non grim-dark Pokemon fics that I've enjoyed. It contains Ash being sent back to the past by Arceus after Cyrus managed to destroy the world. There's some blatant power abuse through Ash learning aura, and some overpowered tendencies, but as a humor-fic, I think that's excusable. There's some occasional grammar mistakes but it's readable on a whole.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has a crazy huge fandom, and between the shit and the gems there are quite a few merely fun stories out there. Pull out some love and tolerance, and post'em if you got 'em.

U-Harmony (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/753/U-Harmony) by Ebon Mare
Summary: Twilight's curiosity pushes her to go were no bookworm has gone before: On dates.

Better than it sounds. Well written, often surprising, always funny. And completely without pony sex.

My Little Hangover (http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/09/story-my-little-hangover.html) by Mousetrap
Summary: When Twilight wakes up to a destroyed hotel room, a hangover so painful it leaves her unable to do magic, a missing pony, and a slew of unanswered questions, she is forced to wonder: did they party too hard? Now, the five ponies must clean up their mess by piecing together a night that none of them can remember, all the while searching for a friend that could already be halfway across the desert... It's a lesson they'll have to learn the hard way. Some ponies just can't handle Haygas.

Ponies. The Hangover. What more need I say?

The Ballad (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7032498/14/The_Ballad_of_Twilight_Sparkle) of Twilight (http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/05/story-ballad-of-twilight-sparkle.html) Sparkle (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/67/The-Ballad-of-Twilight-Sparkle) by Gravekeeper
Summary: Twilight Sparkle is summoned to settle a legal matter involving The Great and Powerful Trixie... What in Equestria did she do now?

Aside form the irritating shippiness, this is terrific. Twilight Sparkle is summoned to Manehattan, and all hell breaks loose. Rainbow Dash: Attorney at Law, Rarity the Valkyrie, and alcoholism. Lots of fun.

That.

That-that-that-that-that!

While some people try to make a huge fuss about it neither the MLP fanbase of DarkLordPotter nor the MLP fandom in general are that large that they justify a separate "almost recommendable" thread.

Threads merged.

Tried it. Was not a fan. Well written enough, but as someone who stopped watching the series mid-Hoenn, half of it went over my head and the whole Aura was annoying.

Alright, here's a couple of stories that I've recently read that to my surprise I enjoyed:

Title: Stingers (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-24258/Tanstaafl+Stingers.htm)
Author: Tanstaafl
Genre: Action/Adventure
Rating: FR15
Fandom: BtVS
Status: Complete
Summary: When Buffy dives off the tower to close Glory's portal at the end of season 5 she ends up somewhere else, minor femslash.

And its sequel...

Title: 101st (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-26253/Tanstaafl+101st.htm)
Author: Tanstaafl
Genre: Action/Adventure
Rating: FR15
Fandom: BtVS
Status: WIP
Summary: Continuing the adventures of Buffy and Barb, minor femslash.

At a little over 200,000 words in total, this series follows Buffy post S5 as she wakes up to find herself in a slightly alternate Sunnydale, 1941. Naturally, this story deals with Buffy in World War II. The pace of the story is tight, fast and pretty damn fun to read, and you can tell the author has done an absurd amount of research into the planes of the Second World War, the military structures of the time for US, UK and Germany, along with a keen grasp of history as Nazi Germany gets a few breaks that didn't go their way in real life.

One of the key themes is Buffy's struggle in trying to actively participate in the war, when women weren't allowed to serve in a combat capacity. Thankfully compared to the author's other series, the femslash is muted and barely a focus.

4/5

Title: 101st (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-26253/Tanstaafl+101st.htm)
Author: Tanstaafl
Genre: Action/Adventure

Fandom: BtVS
Status: WIP
Summary: Continuing the adventures of Buffy and Barb, minor femslash.

The author has a tendency to create random misogynist male OCs that exist for a scene or a chapter or so. They proceed to make annoying nuisances of themselves, and then get threatened/outmaneuvered/bitchslapped by Buffy and exit plot stage right. It was amusing the first time, less amusing the second time, and repetitive the half dozen subsequent times.

While there's a decent amount of justification for it, this Buffy doesn't actually feel very much like S5 Buffy personality wise either. There's a bit of the happy-go-lucky S1 Buffy attitude, a bit of the weary leader S7 attitude, and a generally way more Lawful alignment than any Buffy ever had at any point. Plus the whole fact that she's gay, but Whedon already murdered that boat in S8.

All that being said, it has a lot of engaging fighter combat, a lot of interesting WW2 period stuff, and Buffy actually using her Slayer powers in a random non-magical setting (they get chucked to side or under the bus more often than one might think). If you can tolerate its excesses this is pretty good, I'd personally call it 4/5.

I've got an almost recommendable for ya.

A Naruto/Pokemon fusion story series, with Naruto characters in a pokemon world. It's almost recommended because, well, I can't figure out if it's good enough to be regularly recommended.

Shiney Demon (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5320668/1/Shiny_Demon)
He was going to be great someday. He'd be successful and get on TV! ...He just hoped that all happened before the little furball decided to burn his face off. ONE-SHOT. Obviously AU.

Soothe the Savage (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5331278/1/Soothe_the_Savage)
Follows "Shiny Demon". Naruto/Pokemon crossover. One-shot. Demon is one mean little fire fox...is there anything that can tame it?

Ditto! (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5343194/1/Ditto)
AU, crossover, three-shot; follows "Soothe the Savage". Naruto reaches Shinobi Town where his first gym awaits. But will he triumph or fail? ...And what the heck is the gym leader reading!

Falling Down (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5363011/1/Falling_Down)
AU, crossover, short-ish story; follows "Ditto!". Naruto suffers an accident. Minato has an encounter that leads to a shocking discovery. And one of Kushina's fears is about to come to pass... COMPLETE

Forest of Death (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5460714/1/Forest_of_Death)
AU, short story, follows "Falling Down". Naruto heads to Senju City and the next gym. Tsunade gambles. Minato investigates. And mysterious criminals gather in the Forest of Death... Read, review, and enjoy!

Freaky Foxes (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5610032/1/Freaky_Foxes)
AU, crossover/fusion, follows "Forest of Death". Naruto heads home to celebrate his birthday, but...what is going on in town, whatis out in the woods, and - most importantly - who will make it to his party? Read, review, and enjoy!

Gold and Silver (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5846879/1/Gold_and_Silver)
AU, crossover, follows several months after "Freaky Foxes". Naruto journeys to Demon Country and finds that the fact that it has no gyms is the least of his problems... Read, review, and enjoy!

Surf's Up! (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5952363/1/Surfs_Up)
AU, crossover, falls after "Gold and Silver". Kushina travels with the professor to a foreign conference and has something of an adventure... Read, review, and enjoy!

Shadow and Ash (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7367014/1/Shadow_and_Ash)
AU, follows "Surf's Up!", warning: sad. Naruto always dreamed of having awesome adventures on his pokemon journey, but he never imagined this...

Let's Go Safari! (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7445169/1/Lets_Go_Safari)
AU, short story, follows "Shadow and Ash". Naruto travels to the fabled Safari Zone, only to find it closed! Who's the guy in the orange glasses? And a mysterious thief is lurking in the park... Read, review, and enjoy!

Those are the main ones. The guy's also done some prequels and some "10 things" set in the universe. While they're not the best things you'll ever read, it's a good way to kill an afternoon.

I was wondering why the fics looked familiar - the basic idea is somewhat similar to Seal Shatter, a Naruto fic by the same author.

The whole 'Minato is a hero but isn't with Kushina and doesn't know about Naruto'. In Seal Shatter, it's because he loses his memory. Here, it's because Kushina leaves.

Still, it's interesting enough, though I'd personally prefer to see something a little more about the Pokemon side of things. Only on the fourth so far, maybe that'll change as things continue.

Shadows of Konoha (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7474227/1/Shadows_of_Konoha) by Amora Journeys. Naruto Uzumaki is one of the strongest ninja in the world today. But everyone has their limits. Surprisingly well written story about Naruto's induction into ANBU. The security and anonymity required and applied by them is quite high compared to other ANBU stories, which makes this interesting and different. Naruto is actually in character for once, he still experiences occasional acts of idiocy despite his status as hero of the fourth war and he still maintains that happy go lucky attitude without going overboard. Pretty entertaining read.

I second this. I'm having a hard time finding any major flaws to attack. I didn't notice any giant grammatical faux pas. The writing was simple, clean, and quite engaging. The characterization of both Naruto and the Kyuubi are really good. Sakura and Kakashi are a little weaker, but still solid enough from what little we see of them. Tsunade is fairly well characterized, and I quite liked Ino's characterization.

Over all, I'm intrigued, and will likely be following it quite closely. As it stands now, I would give it a 4/5.

This is my third ME/Halo crosover story that I've read.
This is the first one that doesn't suck.
The crossover is done very well, with actual buildup that made me surprised and care about what was happening to the characters involved.
It had a frighteningly good portrayal of Garrus, and a much more accurate mordin (i.e. his technobabble is actally hard to understand, not keyed in so that 4th wall viewers understand it). The chief is his strong silent self, and Liara does a very good job as the surprise.
Weak characters are Shepard and Cortana. Shepard because of her rather bland personality, and the glossing over that happens. When an empty suit that the player fills becomes an actual character, there is something vital lost in translation.
Cortana is...pathetic. When you factor in that she is damn old and her emotions about the chief, it becomes reasonable, but still a weak characterization.
4/5.
Also, did I mention that there are reaper cults and plot twists and a tense feeling when the crossover happens of "you have no idea whats going to happen"?

I saw that a rather mediocre Fairy Tail/Naruto cross was up in the Naruto section, and I figured I'd toss out what I'd consider a stronger story- I don't think either deserve to be in the library, but I'd rate this at about 3/5, Naruto's character can be spotty, but most of the Fairy Tail characters are pretty good. It's also got a couple of pretty epic moments, like when Naruto gets kicked out of the restaurant for being a jack ass, gets ramen dumped all over him, and then trashes a bunch of Yakuza. Good times.

Title: Elfangor's Folly

Fandom: Animorphs

Rating: M

Summary: After the crash landing, Elfangor finds himself on Earth, alone, the only ones knowing of his presence being the five children who saw him crash. Confronted with the choice to fight or to hide, he chooses to continue the battle. AU

Massive piece of work (520k), that covers the entire Animorph series, including (I think) the mega/ultramorph books. Also, with three different endings.

The piece is plagued by spelling errors - there/their and so forth, as well as more uncommon ones, but it is very rarely that I found myself unable to understand what was actually meant.

The reason I couldn't actually rec this is because of three other reasons. Firstly, it reads almost like it should be read alongside/straight after the series. Time skips are common, but without a frame of reference, and canon situations are alluded to, without outright statement. As I haven't read any of the books after the last one was published, this caused me some confusion. When things start to change that makes it even worse.
Secondly, the entire piece (except epilogues) is done from Elfangor's PoV. This isn't a real problem, but one of the great strengths (I thought at the time) of the original series was that it followed different team members, allowing multiple viewpoints.
Thirdly, there isn't enough change. Elfangor DIES at the beginning of the canon story. Whereas here we have a trained War-Prince leading the fight against the Yeerks. This should change EVERYTHING, as we go from a group of six thirteen-sixteen year olds fighting a war, to a forty year old veteran leading the same. It almost reads like wish fulfilment - some of the canonical 'hard' choices don't have to be faced any more, and it was uncommon to find new ones arising, although a few did.

It is a good, solid chunk of writing, and kept my occupied for the weekend, but it wasn't truly standout. A 3/5, although possibly stretched to a 4.

I remember starting that, and just being disappointed with the standard follow along change-nothing plot. There's no justification for it, and a mission of the month series like Animorphs really suffers from such treatment. There isn't really much of anything written in the fandom without some glaring flaws though, so I might hold my nose and try it again sometime.

I was pleasantly surprised with this Oneshot. Normally, oneshots are the fucking bane of my existence because I get into them and they never continue. And Fem!Naruto is so overdone it might as well be a cliche. But I was impressed with this one.

It's in Mikoto Uchiha's POV, which was really interesting. And it was a bit weird enough to keep me hooked for the entire thing. Even when I read it a second time. Or a third time.

This is the only ASOIAF fic I've found that is any good, and it's worth a read. The characters are well-written, and it's not the typical fangirl squeeing fest that most ASOIAF fics tend to be.

Anyone that reads the various ASOIAF theories knows about L+R=J, and this is going to presumably cover that. The next chapter is going to be the tourney itself, I think, and it will be getting rather interesting. This is updated regularly enough, and I really enjoy this fic. I was going to post it in For Review, but I wasn't sure if there was enough of an audience for it here.

The author also has a recently published fic, Water Dancers (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7834611/1/Water_Dancers), which has one chapter so far, but looks promising. Pretty AU in that it says, "What if Jon Arryn died 5 years later?" It contains Sansa/Theon and Arya/Joffrey. Theon is appropriately cuntish.

Title: Making Magick
Author: Mashadar
Fandom: Familiar of Zero and Magicka
Pairing: ?
Rating: K+
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7667766/1/
Summary: The unlikeliest of crossings. The most improbable of incidents. The most hilarious of universes. A considerably different sort of crossover. Sanity is for the weak anyway.

A crackfic with elements of horror (for Louise). Crossovers are a guilty pleasure of mine, this one though is decently written and quite interesting.
This one actually has a lot more smaller snippets on SB. I know as I was the one who indexed them.:p

You can find the rest of the ex-canon snippets listed HERE (http://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/magicka-louise-planning-thread.200775/#post-6527296).

Teach Your Children Well (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6040262/1/Teach_Your_Children_Well) by AvocadoLove - After Madara final attack on the village, Rokudaime Kakashi uncovers a time-travel scroll. Now he's Team Seven's sensei again. And this time, he's going to do things differently. A time travel fic.
Naruto - Rated: K+ - English - Adventure/Fantasy - Chapters: 7 - Words: 19,036 - Reviews: 906 - Updated: 3-31-12 - Published: 6-10-10 - Kakashi H. & Iruka U.

I think it fits into the "Almost Recommendable" category. It's got a few problems and so far it's only around 20k words, but it kept my interest more than most Naruto has lately. Kakashi is the primary character.

No Pairings so far, but Kakashi and Iruka are heading towards being friends. So far there's no hint of anything else, but given that Iruka is listed as a main character who knows.

A couple of quick things: 1) The Sasuke in the future was A Very Bad Man. Whether he goes down the same path again, or finds a way to redeem himself in Kakashi's eyes will be a large part of this fic. I just wanted to put that out there before anyone accuses me of character bashing. 2) While the primary focus of this fic will be action/adventure with Kakashi training the kids up and rearranging things to his liking, the pairing will eventually be Kakashi/Iruka. This will be secondary to the main plot because I'm not a strong romance writer, but if you're uncomfortable with a m/m pairing then this probably where you should hop off the crazy-train. (Although you're more than welcome to stay! :D )

It's planned to be slash.

Pretty awesome for FMA. I'm only on chapter two, but it's worth a mention so far. Basically, Ed actually succeeds in bringing his mother back. Al still has his body. But things didn't quite go as they should have.

And I see no mention of slash in the AN.

Reading it now. I can see why you felt the need to say you saw no mention of upcoming slash. There are hints of it. Much of it is done as humor, like what ensued when Ed accused Mustang of being a pedophile, but little things like Ed (a rather young Ed) noticing the "patch of creamy white skin" on Mustang when he rolls his sleeves up implies it might go down that route later. Irksome.

Mustang and Ed seem mostly in character, which I like. I was particularly amused by Ed always thinking of Mustang as the Bastard. That said I only got partway through Chapter 2 before taking a break and deciding to review -- just in case I don't finish it later.

Preliminary 3/5 though.

Although the "Ed rants at people" bits are definitely overblown, it's still a quite enjoyable piece. I feel like you'd have to age him up for them to really fit, but characters talking far above their age tends to be a common problem in fanfiction. Good to see it being picked up again by the author as well. Can't say I've seen any other good FMA fics though; not to pull off topic, but any good recs?

FMA thread. https://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=14857

A bit old but valid. As for the perceived age of characters, well, at least in Ed's case it is easy to accept. He is a genius who is used to taking action, even at that age.

---------- Post automerged 05-11-2012 at 09:11 AM ---------- Previous post was 05-10-2012 at 11:14 PM ----------

Finished reading it. Was disappointed a bit, but it definitely fits "Almost Recommended."

The problem I had with it is the speed. We have basically 100k words of vaguely creepy Mustang/Ed bonding. I say vaguely creepy because of Ed noticing things like Mustang's skin all the time, and he's 11.

The premise is fine. Ed succeeds in reviving his mother and Al has his body. Therefore we remove much of Ed's drive to act like he did in canon. Therefore he's slightly more pliable and willing to just hang around Central doing research as his own pace. He went to Central because his mother started to go Star Wars on him (fear leads to anger leads to hate, etc.). While he's there he stays with Mustang, because he doesn't know anyone else and Mustang has a sweet library, and being an eleven year old child he starts to form an attachment to Mustang.

Great. ...but that's about it for 100k words. The only other thing is a murder mystery we have going on in the background. It's actually fairly interesting the small way in which Ed is able to help with it, but that aspect of the story is tiny, tiny in comparison to what I talked about in the previous paragraph.

Things finally got interesting with the last paragraph of the updated story... but it hasn't been updated in over a year. I gave the LJ a cursory glance and it appears that the author is still working on it, but I won't hold out for the story ever managing to go anywhere given the current pace of text and update rate.

Good link for this thread though, thanks.

Friendship Contract: My Little Pony/Naruto Crossover (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/23662/Friendship-Contract)

Basic premise is that Naruto gains a summon contract with the ponies. Hits a few of the cliches of Naruto fiction, but doesn't belabor them to the point of aggravation. Also does a bit too much retreading of canon for my tastes.

Still, it's fun enough to make for an enjoyable read, even if it's not that great from a technical point of view.

Another big plus, the update rate has been phenomenal so far; getting daily updates is always nice.

There are also a few interesting twists, like having a chunk of Discord sealed in Naruto alongside the Fox.

Also, Pinkie Pie learning sealing and using it to create the Gatling Party Cannon, capable of firing over 100 parties a second.

It's not the best written story ever and you can't really take it all that seriously but I'll be damned if it wasn't charming and entertaining as fuck. Naruto is a bit overpowered but you just have so much fun reading this that it doesn't disturb you. It's a Naruto / MLP crossover more in the spirit of MLP than it is Naruto, meaning no gore or whatnot but it is working.

All in all, a good way to waste a weekend with something not too serious.

The Naruto/MLP Crossover is pretty amusing. Or the first ten chapters I've read so far are. It's cute-sy and like someone said, it has more of the MLP "feel" to it than the Naruto feel. Naruto is the main character though.

Good time waster.

Edit: I started to get bored not too much later though. It's still cute/cool to a point, but Naruto constantly summoning ponies just to make tasks from canon easier (Kakashi passed out after fighting Zabuza? Summon Big Macintosh to carry him! ...and so on) was a little irritating.

I stopped reading after Chapter 15, though I may pick it back up later if bored.

Edit2: Skimmed through the rest of it -- couldn't get into past chapter 15 or so as mentioned.

It does make for an interesting contrast, since pretty much every MLP crossover I've ever seen before this tends to put ponies into the darker setting, not lighten up the other setting to match the spirit of MLP.

Nemrut
05-14-2012, 07:43 AM
Those darker stories also tend to play in the ponyverse though. I think your Dresden crossover is the only one I know that is a bit darker in which the ponies leave their dimension and even there, it is only temporary. Normally, people go to the ponyverse or the ponyverse is changed/re-imaged to fit the darker themes.

So, it was a nice change to see someone just having fun with the concept of summoning ponies without taking it all that seriously. Not a great story or even a particularly good one in terms of writing and plot but still, entertaining and charming.

Not that the Narutoverse is particularly dark to begin with, canon tells the story more lighthearted than it should, so, wasn't as big of a leap. Naruto himself is two minutes away from weaponizing friendship, so, common theme there. At least MLP is honest about that, right in the title.

Actually, I rather liked the pacing. Most FMA writers tend to go full tilt and not even bother with character development, so having her go so slow is kind of refreshing.

The 30K word chapters are pretty nice though.

And the last part of the Ch. 7 I saw coming a mile away. Though I would have been majorly disappointed if it didn't.

Anyways, I looked around on their LJ, too, and apparently the story is supposed to be around... a dozen chapters, give or take. I'm going to assume that there's going to be a time jump somewhere (like canon), so I wouldn't lose interest just yet.

But, it does say on the LJ that the eventual pairing is Roy/Ed. Shame on them.

I've been watching the author for quite a bit now, and her writing style has improved by leaps and bounds. I'm a little over halfway with this story, and while the beginning kind of sucks, and I would have wanted to see a bit more originality in how Ed actually got to Narutoverse, it's pretty good for the fandom.

She isn't a slash writer either, so no worries there.

I was hesitant to try "Never Let Go" but I'm glad that I did. One thing that impresses me about it that I rarely see in fanfiction is the growth/change of various relationships (and I don't mean romance). It took me a while to realize it was happening (around halfway through maybe), but it is.

Examples:
We start off with Ed and Itachi becoming friends. The Hokage is suspicious of Ed but gives him a chance, while Ed seems to generally like the Hokage. Sasuke is jealous of the attention Ed gets from Itachi, since they become friends.

At some point Ed moves on from his memories of his previous life, and the various thoughts of Al, Winry, Mustang, etc. we have more or less exit the fic, but they were there for long enough to make it clear Ed didn't forget them.

Itachi kills his clan but Ed knows there was more to it. By this time he has become a secondary sort of big brother to Sasuke. Itachi pretty much ceases to have a role in the fic.

Ed ends up taking in Naruto, who at first does not get along with Sasuke at all, but it grows into it. Ed starts to figure out the deal with Itachi, and his feelings towards the Hokage start to cool a good bit.

...and so on. Relationships spring up, die away, go from good to bad, etc. Ed makes decisions he doesn't want to make, but continues moving forward and doing what he can. He fights with Danzo, loses, and decides the best thing he can do is work for him... at least until he can figure out how to betray him.
The writing itself in the story isn't quite library material, but it's not that far off so I'm impressed by it nonetheless. Normally in fanfic I see relationships grow, but it's more rare to see them change like this. I liked it, despite the other flaws the story has.

A 3.5/5 from me I guess.

The Girl with Red Hair is pretty good, and for extra kicks it acts as an AU of The Girl From Whirlpool with the relationship between Minato and Kushina directly drawing from it (though this story is told entirely from Harry's POV so we only hear about the other fic's happenings through stories and hints).

All in all I'm really enjoying it as a slice of life type fic, though it has definitely taken a turn for the darker as of the sixth chapter. Mentioning that, I found myself very disappointed when I got there, because I wanted to keep reading. The storyline may be slow (kinda, it's covered about a year from Harry's arrival to the present) and Harry's reason for going is a bit contrived, but aside from that it kept my attention very well.

Given a bit of time and some more chapters, I would recommend this for the library.

I have the same problems with it, I like it but it starting to annoy me with it pace.
I hope we will see some consequence of Minato losing half of his chakra and arm. Now he shouldn't be so powerful to give big edge for Konoha in future conflicts (Sound-Sand, Kumo abduction), it should make story more interesting. I'm looking forward for his continues struggling with his power, as he is now he isn't better than Jiraya, Orochimaru, etc.

The Lives Worth Saving (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7803347/): Naruto, at 26, has lived through 10 years of war. At the end, with nothing left to call home, he sends himself back to the beginning, to the day of his younger self's graduation, in an attempt to change it all. Time travel AU.

I found this via the Filtered Fanfiction search, but a quick look around DLP informs me that it has also been mentioned here (https://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=21290), in a thread for Quality Naruto fics.

Personally I think it's pushing more of a 4/5 than a 3/5, and after reading it I debated putting it up for Review. I'm still debating, but for now I'll just toss it in here.

As much as I enjoyed reading it, well, the pace is a bit slow. Naruto goes back in time but keeps his current body (so there's also a younger Naruto running around, and the main one starts using a different name). So far Naruto has told the Sandaime what's going on but otherwise he's just done a secret mission or two and (mostly, but not solely) bummed around with canon characters (for good purpose, I'll admit, but we're over 100k words here).

There are bits of writing scattered about it that strike me as being very well done. Otherwise it does seem to drag on a bit and sometimes I'd find myself skimming ahead a bit to get to the next interesting part.

Edit: Oh, and I think the first chapter might have been pretty rough -- skip halfway down or even give the second one a go if that was the case perhaps? Not sure, but iirc there was some Kyuubi!Head convo.

Edit2: Oh, and another issue I had -- the plotting isn't that tight. Things will be introduced and then never come back up once the idea has been developed a bit. We had a few things revolve around Haruki living next to Naruto, then it was never brought up again (despite Haruki still living there). A former student of Haruki's is brought up and then not mentioned again. And so on.

Plus there seems to be no end to what Haruki is capable of. But at least that can be justified in-universe more or less.

Postnuptial Disagreements (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8078340/1/)» Years after his parents survived Heaven's Feel, the son of Kayneth and Sola-Ui finds himself in a different sort of supernatural tournament. But can he survive superpowered alien females, scheming businessmen, and his own partner's urge to strangle him? Fate/stay night & Sekirei, T, English, c17, w55k+, u5/24/12 p5/1/12, No. 105/Benitsubasa

The FSN/Sekirei crossover section seems to be filled with well, In Flight and poor In Flight clones or omake. This fic is one of the few that don't follow the same formula.

It follows Meriwether Archibald, the son of Kayneth who finds himself in the Sekirei plan (his dream being to be in involved in the Holy Grail War). Meriwether is a complete douchebag, seeing nothing wrong with using blackmail, holding hostages and all those effective techniques to win the Game. He's also, as Shirou from In Flight would describe, a first rate magus whose immediate thoughts regarding Type Sekirei to be one of academic curiosity, and a want to start cutting them open for further study.

Despite his character, instead of a grimdark story, it'd presented as a lighthearted, almost comical fic. Particularly, his interaction with his Sekirei, Benitsubasa, is hilarious. Her, feeling all the usual feelings of love towards her ashikabi, and him, being ridiculously emotionally, romantically and sexually sheltered.

A ridiculously high update rate helps too, with several chapters coming out per week.

I'm almost tempted to give it a 4/5 and put it up for review in the library.

I've been reading Postnuptials, too. It's a good story, and fans of In Flight who didn't like the harem will like it because Meriwether only has one sekirei. The plot moves faster than In Flight, and the Fate side is far more pronounced as well. I've been tempted to recommend it as well, but held off because of laziness. And I didn't think it was quite good enough for the library, maybe a 3.5 rather than a full four.

I was tempted to put it up for review simply because it's the best cross between these two fandoms. Naruto stays mostly true to his timeskip canon self - he's laid back and cheerful though that's tempered with maturity and perception that war has instilled in him. The rest of the Fairy Tail cast are done quite well too with character interactions being a strong point of this fic.

Only negatives I have are a very average opening chapter and minor spelling/grammar mistakes.

Overall I would give this a solid 4/5 for being highly enjoyable.

Okay, this really isn't all that great, but it's readable. There are a fair few typos, oddly missing words, and some grammatical mistakes, which are all irksome, but nothing a beta couldn't fix. The storyline isn't anything to write home about, and the premise could have been handled better. But once you get past the first few opening chapters, there's some decent training, and Naruto doesn't act like a jackass, actually taking his training seriously. He discovers the secret of the Kage Bunshin a lot earlier and Jiraiya takes a more active role in his life sooner.

Some things, contrasting with canon in small ways, annoy me, like the use of Goukakyuu no Jutsu by non-Uchihas, especially in the case of Jiraiya. Jiraiya should use Endan no Jutsu, not Goukakyuu. But whatever, it's readable, which is something I can't say for most Naruto fanfiction.

Average (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7213849/1/Average) Basically Shikimaru and Tenten meet up when they first start the academy and decide that getting engaged is the best way to ward off 'fangirlitis'. I figured I'd put it here as it isn't exactly a literary masterpiece but it made me laugh a few times.

I believe you meant laughs.

That said I got several lines in, my suspicion growing at the familiar style, before browsing back up and confirming the author was who I suspected it to be and closing it. No thank you. I can only stand her writing once or twice before it all looks the same no matter whose names are substituted.

Judgement Calls is pretty good. If you enjoy the Terminator universe. The middle is excellent but it kind of drags in places. The writing is solid but nothing special.

I enjoyed reading it well enough. I would give it a solid 4/5 for fans of the universe.

Also Sarah1281 writes so fucking much that you have to expect most of it to be cookie cutter. I mean 287 stories, even if a good portion of them are one shots, is just irresponsible.

I'm kind of interested in the Fate/Stay Night universe but there isn't a ton of background info. Could anyone give me a short explanation?

Fate/Stay Night (series) - 24 ep anime follows the first route, Fate, with a few bits and pieces from the other 2 routes. It's enjoyable. I watched it without having read the VN first. It does skim over a lot of detail, but then, most adaptions do. The Fate route is pretty dull though, so the anime ends up being hurt from that.

Unlimited Blade Works (movie) - follows the second route, which is way more interesting than Fate. Since it's a movie, it's rather rushed and crammed, and you probably need to read the VN to really understand the specifics. The movie focuses more on the major fight scenes really. Nonethless, I fucking loved UBW movie with no VN backing (seems I'm one of the few though). You really need to watch FSN or read the VN though to understand even remotely what the hell is going on.

Fate Zero (series) - is a currently airing 26 episode series that is based on light novels, and is a prequel to FSN. It's set 10 years below and in my opinion, is the best of the three. Most people agree that it's a pretty decent adaption, as far as adaptions go, and the storyline is epic to start with. You can watch this standalone without watching the others.

I've been recommending Fate Zero to a lot of people who generally don't watch much anime, and they've been loving it.

Thanks for the info. I've kinda been looking for something new to watch.

NGE was awesome but I don't want to watch the remakes until they are all out, Bleach and Naruto have become very meh, One Piece is decent, and I've watched a few other anime series that were decent.

So I am hopeful that these are good. Probably going to start with Unlimited Blade Works as it seems to be up my alley.

I'd give you a thumbs up but I'm still too much of a newb.

Best known as a wandering mage and noticed for his disfigurements, Natsu travels Fiore in search of finding answers. But why does he keep encountering mages from Fairy Tail? And will they learn of his intentions and his deepest, darkest secrets?
Fairy Tail - Fiction Rated: T - English - Action/Adventure/Fantasy - Chapters: 31 - Words: 248,151 - Reviews: 348 - Updated: 3-31-12 - Published: 8-26-11 - - Natsu D.It's really hard to find readable multi-chapter Fairy Tail story under any character list. This is the best one I've read so far. Natsu is this wandering mage that is missing an arm, mute, and has chucks of flesh missing. Naturally, he's not the Idiot Hero that Natsu is in canon, but his personality isn't so overhauled that he is an OC with same name. Just more world-weary and smarter.

Yeah, I know the injuries (especially the muteness) sounds like the start of some emo-laden fiction, but it's not treated as such, but rather the incident creating the scars is plot point that he keeps hidden from everyone (and from the readers as well). My main gripe is that the authors (it's a collaboration) refer to polls to readers for plot points too much. I can't stand it when authors do that. And the writing structure-wise, particularly at the beginning, is a bit sketchy.

I give it a solid 3.5-4/5.

I quite like this. It's a different Naruto who doesn't appear to have been extremely close to the Third and uses Hatake-sensei instead of Kakashi, but at his core it still feels like Naruto with his straight forward attitude and crassness... though I haven't heard him exclaim he's going to be the Hokage. Also no shadow clones (yet, at least) as this AU has a Naruto who learns early he can heal from almost anything fairly quickly, which naturally causes a few changes to canon.

I could actually see this in the library, with a 4/5 or so, once there's a bit more of it. Also I had the impression that the story was complete due to the review saying something about the entire story being posted, but it's not. It's just that the 7 chapters currently up were posted inside of a month.

Been reading that as well. It's pretty fun and one of the better non crossover ZnT fics.

Another one that is a bit cheesier, but similar (and to be honest, one I enjoyed more) is:

Drifter Series: Revolution and Freedom (http://m.fanfiction.net/s/7573006/1/) Japanese-American US Army Ranger Alex Tsougi always considered himself a normal military grunt. Familiar of Zero, T, English, Adventure & Fantasy, c40, w113k+, u3/17/12 p11/22/11, Cattleya

It's a bit of a "OC character comes in and wins" type story, but it's fairly well written and has a good plot.

The main character isn't summoned by Louise, instead waking up in Albion. From there he starts a democratic revolution, using all his modern military strategy.

If you liked Emperor of Zero, this is quite similar.

Yeah...can't say I've ever seen this cross before, I checked it out for the novelty but it's actually pretty well put together. There isn't much, maybe a dozen snippets, and it seems to be abandoned, but it's an interesting take on a rather unconventional crossover.

It's worth noting the snippets aren't necessarily in order, but you get a more or less structured story by the end.

That was horrible. If this is the best pure Fairy Tail fic, then the fandom isn't worth pissing on if it were on fire.

The collaborative effort between the authors was very poor. The writing quality went up and down like a yoyo. The downswings were eating dirt. The colab wasn't very well coordinated either. Quite a few scenes would repeat themselves as a new author took over and retold the last event from another character's perspective. In some stories this is done once or twice with good reason, but here it was just the authors stepping on each others toes.

Aside from the writing effort, the plot was quite boring. It seems to be following canon events with just a few characters shifted around, but no great changes. The passages from Natsu's perspective are the most interesting ones, though his character can be frustratingly passive at times.

I do like the hook to this fic. The story behind Natsu's condition and his current mission is interesting in the little bits and pieces of it which are revealed, but it's not enough to make the rest of the fic worth reading. I found the most recent arc, arc V, to be terminably boring [arc IV wasn't much better]. I skipped most of it, only stopping where I saw interesting events and characters.

I won't be continuing with this. 1/5

This was really surprising to find, since more than half of the stories in that fandom are slash (Loki/Tony being the most popular... No. Just, no). It's an odd pairing (Loki/Jane), and it's barely started, but it's promising.

The summary pretty much gives you the gist of it, but her writing is very descriptive. Very vivid, but it might be a tad overbearing to the guys who prefer the bare-bones type of writing.

Water Mage's From The Brightest Constellation in DresWBA had brief moments, and there was this one future fic that was more about Maggie Dresden meeting up with her estranged father that had hints of a Dresden/Molly to come... but the only "big" one is another mostly smutty oneshot, Teach Me (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5345376/1/Teach_Me). I love Teach Me 'cause it actually nails some of the emotions involved, and this is before Changes and Ghost Story came along and added those complexities.

Anyone up for some Dresden/Molly smut?

The Empty Cage (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7305950/11/The_Empty_Cage) by Rathanel is a Kyuubi-centric fic that poses a "what if" situation in which Naruto's life is taken by the Shinigami along with Minato's, leaving only the Kyuubi to control the still physically alive vessel/prison that is Uzumaki Naruto's body.

The writing is a little immature, and canon Bijuu history is completely thrown out the window.

To me, I think the Kyuubi is done fairly well, early, but grows too fond of others too quickly. Still, despite this downside I'd vote it a 3.5 - 4/5. But most definitely not to the taste of most of DLP. Quite of the few of the other characters are well written and in general I really enjoyed the story.

It's epic length, so don't fear not having enough to read if you do end up liking it.

Yea, that was put in last night sometime I think. It's really fucking annoying and as far as I can tell, there's no way to revert back to full-screen. If anyone finds how, please share.

OT:
NARUTO

Potential Realized (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7113972/1/Naruto_Potential_Realised) by Iron Monkey Fist

Short version is that Sarutobi survives Orochimaru's attack and conveniently thinks Naruto should be a Chuunin. The actual bit with Sarutobi agreeing to the promotion is a bit contrived, but it's got some interesting ideas about Konoha's military structure, and the core premise is something I enjoy. There's little in the way of "look at how amazing Naruto is!", though there are aspects of it.

I have to knock it for a couple of things though. First and foremost, there's a lot of OCs. Some of them are done well, others not so much. A few are there solely to be the buttmonkey and/or antagonists, and I'm not a big fan of that.

Second, it suffers from plot railroading something fierce, so far at least. The best example is the Tsunade retrieval arc. The circumstances involved in starting that are... contrived to say the least, as are the stated reasons for Orochimaru's presence. The author is claiming to be jumping off the rails with the next arc, but we'll see when it comes out.

Finally, there's a rather dramatic character shift in Sasuke. There's a lot of "telling" that portrays Sasuke as he is in canon (read: emotionally damaged and volatile) and a lot of "showing" that portrays him as more-or-less normal psychologically. I'm not sure if the author is just bad at showing the first, or if there's an actual reason for the telling to be wrong, but there you go.

All told, I'd give it a 3-3.5/5. Well worth the time to read, but nothing extraordinary.

I'm going to go ahead and offer a tentative recommendation for this one. It's set in the Star Trek 2009 movieverse and is the only fic of this pairing I've come across. A little campy in spots, it manages to pull off the Genius!Kirk thing reasonably well. T'Pring stays largely in character (as little as we know of her character in Star Trek canon, anyway). And there's just something about the premise of Kirk's attending the Vulcan Science Academy that amuses me.

It is, perhaps, a bit late in the day to suggest this, but could we perhaps develop a posting format that has people declare early on in their posts, in a very clear way, the fandom of the story they're suggesting? Like this:

STAR WARS

Dynasty by Valerie Vancollie

Coauthor: Rebecca Thomson. Abandoned on the first Death Star, Luke's true identity is revealed and Vader takes him to Coruscant. There he learns about the Empire and the Dark Side even as he hears his best friend has joined the Alliance.

It's a fairly old one shot, a little less than 5k words. It was one of the few Percy Jackson fanfics that I enjoyed, since I found DLP. The author knows her mythology/history pretty well and it reflects during the story. I'd rate it 4/5 leaning closer to 4.5 though.

I tried the Naruto Video Game story -- I got bogged down in and started skimming a couple of times but on the whole I was able to somewhat get into it. Definitely worthy of this thread, though I don't think it'd make the library.

(Hoping it wasn't provided somewhere in the thread that'd make me feel like a jackass when pointed out)

If it was linked I missed it.

The only story I could think of would be Naruto: Game of the Year Edition (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4823029/1/Naruto_Game_of_the_Year_Edition) I've never really read it through only skimmed a couple chapters, but it may be the fic your looking for.

This is a Fullmetal Alchemist / Harry Potter Crossover that I think fits nicely into "Almost Recommended." The primary character is Edward Elric and the primary setting is Hogwarts, though Mustang and Harry take on secondary roles.

Full Metal Magic? (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2626358/1/Full_Metal_Magic)
Author: Sil'vinya
Ed is sent on a new mission, under the direct orders of Colonel Mustang. The two of them are to travel to Britain to aid in apprehending a dangerous criminal. Mustang is to work with the local ministry where Ed is to work undercover at a..? Magic school?
Rated: Fiction T - English - Harry P. & Edward E. - Reviews: 1,269 - Chapters: 34 - Words: 100,896 - Updated: 04-13-11 - Published: 10-20-05
It's rough. There's a reason I'm not putting it up for review. There's also a reason I've read the first 20 chapters and intend to read the rest of the story, and that's because I find it interesting despite it's flaws. Plus every couple of chapters I run across something that I think was well done.

At any rate, the premise is that Mustang and Elric are hired/ordered/asked/whatever to figure out what they can about magic and keep an eye on the situation in Britain. Ed goes to Hogwarts and Mustang goes to the Ministry. Neither pretends to be a wizard - they are Alchemists. The two worlds in question exist together and there are no alternate universes involved. Al is left behind as he'd be conspicuous.

I think the best parts so far are the interactions between Ed and Mustang. The author seems to have gotten that more or less right. There's antagonism, bickering, short jokes, and some cleverly hidden mutual respect.

It does follow Potter canon to a point, and Ed does befriend the trio, but fortunately Ed doesn't seem to be intricately involved in most of the canon stuff going on. He comments once or twice about the fights about Harry's Potions book, sees Harry come back with a cursed Katie Bell, etc., but generally runs around going WTF@MAGIC in his head, following the leads he has on Flamel and the Philosopher's Stone, and reporting to Mustang about what he finds out as part of his assignment to keep an eye on things.

It has a lot of flaws but I'm curious to see where it goes nonetheless.

...Oh, and it's full of weird errors. Like "Griffindores" or "Quidditch is a bazaar sport." :facepalm

Title: Mahou Senki: Lyrical Days
Author: Hero Slayer
Fandom: FateStay Night/Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Links: ff.net (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7078302/1/Mahou_Senki_Lyrical_Days); Beast's Lair (http://forums.nrvnqsr.com/showthread.php/874-Mahou-Senki-Lyrical-Days-%28FSN-x-Nanoha-Crossover%29) (all the snipets post (http://forums.nrvnqsr.com/showthread.php/874-Mahou-Senki-Lyrical-Days-%28FSN-x-Nanoha-Crossover%29?p=799842&viewfull=1#post799842))
The wheel of fate is derailed as Emiya Shirou is brought up in Uminari City. Watch the birth of a Magical Hero as the boy with a body of swords meets the White Devil.

Quite well written crossover. Grammar is good. No prior knowledge of Nanoha is required as this follows the plot of the first season. It doesn't deviate much from it and that is it's main failing. The story will probably follow to the end of first season of Nanoha, than follow Nanoha A's plot and after that will enter into Holy Grail War.

FF.net version have 6 chapters and the first half of chapter seven can be found on Beast's Lair forums. Also I provided a link to complete list of all snippets written in that universe.

Right now I would give this tentative 4/5 or strong 3,5/5. It's an interesting read but it all depends on how the plot will advance.

Fullmetal Alchemist / Harry Potter Crossover

I am reminded of this one fic I was reading where Ed got trapped in our world after he left Amestris and somehow isn't aging, and just happens to be in Little Whinging, where Harry just happens to be going to summer school (Ed is there for some reason), and Ed is like a mathematical genius. Granted, he's been here since the 40's, but whatever, we can ignore the fact that he's doing doctorate level physics and mathematics when he's around what appears to be sixteen (as I recall, this takes place in the Indy!Harry cliche time period of right after Sirius' death)

Despite alchemy existing in the magical world, he is somehow considered a muggle, at least according to the fact that he struggles with Hogwarts' wards, to the point where he actually sweats from the exertion. Also, anti-muggle wards are apparently a dome and Hogwarts has no defenses against a determined muggle. Nevermind the fact that Filch is never shown to have trouble with them.

Regardless of all of these problems, it was readable, but I simply can't remember the name, mostly because I read it like two or three years ago.

It isn't too bad. I only got through the first few chapters, but it's not really my thing though. I couldn't get into it and didn't feel like forcing myself to read more, does it get better beyond that point?

On topic:

The Howling of Wolves (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7803068/1/The_Howling_of_Wolves) by LD 1449
A Song of Ice and Fire
Essentially it is a series of one-shots that are from random places throughout the book(s), and are not related in any way. Definitely not the best of works, a guilty pleasure at most, but it is a decent way to kill a few minutes.
(On a completely unrelated note; Does A Song of Ice and Fire sound a little more forced than A Song of Fire and Ice? It may just be me, but I keep making that mistake due to it rolling of the tongue better.)

Desolation (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7877166/1/Desolation) by DeExil
Naruto / High School of the Dead
A crossover that takes the ninja element away from Naruto and makes him a pseudo Captain America type of soldier; pretty much there is no elemental nations and it seems to have some plot revolving around the Jinchuuriki characters. On top of that it is fairly short, around 20k words and the author doesn't update too often. Overall, it's not too bad, 'bout 3/5. Not the best, but it is a far cry from the worst.

Second Chances (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8202535/1/Second_chances) by GrooveyGuru
Naruto / Fairy Tail
In a nutshell summary; ancient voodoo beads allow single dimension travel, World is destroyed, refugee goes to Earthland.
A really annoying thing is the author seems to have something against referencing a character by anything other than there name. [Example, using X and Y as names: "Hey that's X" said Y. Y recognized X from the daily newspaper. Y ran over to meet him. (Really shitty example, but hopefully you get what I'm trying to convey)]
Of the three fics in this post I'd say this one would be my favourite even though it only has one chapter. About a 3/5 with the potential to become a 3.5/5 if it is edited more before posting.

Nothing too special, but it definitely fits this threads description.

- Assumptions were made -

On the subject of Howling of Wolves, I'll give it a look, but I'm also somewhat wary about it because I'm currently working my way through the first book in the series. I like it so far, and it was definitely worth the $7 I spent on it. I'll probably watch the first season of the show after I finish the book, or something.

The first 2-3 chapters were the worst, as the set-up was botched in a lot of ways, but it did not improve significantly. If you got to the Diagon Alley scene and it hadn't caught your interest then give up on it.

I don't think I've ever read a single FMA fanfic that I actually liked (crossover or not). And I really loved the anime (both of them). =\Yeah, I think the problem is that the Manga/BrotherhoodAnime did almost too good of a job. There aren't a lot of jumping off points to create awesome fanfic from because the story itself was really well plotted and is very hard to improve upon. Sort of the opposite of Harry Potter.

Hey guys! I know everyone here has been waiting with baited breath for Shezza to write some more awesome Denarian!Harry, but now your wait is over. I bring you...

Denarian Chronicles: The Denarian Renegade (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8227824/1/Denarian_Chronicles_The_Denarian_Renegade)!

Highlights include...
Summary: Despite vanquishing Voldemort, Harry's younger brother Benjamin and Neville Longbottom is hailed as the Boys-Who-Lived and Harry is left at Dursely's doorstep where he is deprived of love and abused. Offered with temptation, Harry accepts the power to make his own destiny. From this point on, there will be sections in this story where it will be same as Shezza88's Denarian Series. While I'll try to write with my own words, IT IS based on the Denarian series so expect some similar sections. First few chapters will have lot of words copied from Shezza88's Denarian Series, they are necessary to set up the background before I start tweaking things around and add in my own plot.AND!... actually, it looks like all the good writing in this story was copy/pasted directly from Shezza's work, but the bits that this author wrote are good for a laugh!

Just in case anyone can't tell, I'm being sarcastic. I am not actually promoting this story. It's a bit rude of the guy to use so much of Shezza's stuff if he didn't ask though. *shrug* I just found the blatant copying to be amusing, especially the way that Shezza's excellent writing is now mixed in with poor quality writing.

The story I was writing on, The Denarian Chronicle: Denarian Renegade, was apparently deleted cause I think it was too similar to Shezza88's Denarian Renegade. I'll try to rewrite it as a new story without the plot being too similar this time (Although it would still feature Meciel, Order of Blackened Denarians, Knights of Cross and other things from Dresden Files).

The author reposted (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8244833/2/The_Fallen_Renegade) the story saying he would be rewritting it, and now have Shezza permission.

Hi Shezza88

My pen name is Ikarus Solotov and I'm an avid reader for your Denarian Series (One of my favorite). Lately, I've been reading lots of Wrong-Boy-Who-Lived stories for Harry Potter and these ideas about combining the Denarian Series with Wrong-Boy-Who-Lived twist have been popping up in my mind. With your permission to use the Denarian Series as basis for a new story, I would like to give a shot at writing a new story. Please send me your decision, if "Yes," perhaps a few advice since it would be my first time writing a story.

Sincerely.

Hey,

You're more than welcome to use elements of the Denarian series, provided that you give a shout-out to where you got the ideas from. I'm done with the series and more than happy to let other writers give it a shot.

Congratulations on working towards your first story. My advice to you would be to make interesting and funny characters. Try not to needlessly bash characters you don't like (a pitfall that I stumbled into, actually). Make sure your punctuation and sentences make sense. Avoid cliches as best you can.

That's about it. Have fun.
Shezza

Hogyoku ex Machina (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6437275/1/Hogyoku_ex_Machina) by Mac Ceallach
In the final battle with Aizen a different choice is made, and now Ichigo and his greatest enemy have gone back to the beginning. His best friends are powerless, his allies don't know him, and everything he loves is in danger. Complete.

That last word is a great enticement. This is basically a Peggy Sue fic, but both Ichigo and Aizen don't shy away from changing things, and everyone's mostly in their canon personalities. Quite a few cliches, but I enjoyed it. It might not be to everyone's taste.

I'll second that recommendation. It's not great, but there's a level of competence and interest that you don't usually see in Bleach fanfiction. That one story got into the fandom again for about a week- where I found that it's still mostly shit.

I just recently read through that Fallen Renegade story and let me tell you, I've seen less sucking in a Taiwanese whore house(and I know a thing or two about Taiwanese whore houses). The writing is horrid, the characters are a bunch of vacuous wastes of space, Dumbledore at one point announces that "The prophesy is fulfilled!" and Harry is sent to Privet Drive for some idiotic reason.

Oh wait, did I mention Harry? I meant Aries Phoenix Lightning.

Anyway Mahou Senki: Lyrical Days is surprisingly well written and even though I know nothing about Nanoha I didn't have much trouble while following it. Space ship part felt a bit jarring to be honest but again like said I don't know anything about the anime(?), so it's normal I'm guessing.

About the plot, while it looks like the author planned things through I just can't seem to care about bunch nine-years-old brats to be honest.

Murphy-centric Dresden fic.

Technically speaking part of a series, and despite the author's note I think it would read a lot better if you read Near Miss and Snow Days (which are Dresden-centric, but slash). A lot of the backstory is assumed from the previous fics, but I already read them so I don't know how well one could figure it out without reading them. Still worth checking it, the writing is excellent and the characterizations are great.

A fantastic crossover between NCIS and Buffy, this gem is one of the best written pieces in either fandom; the writing is rock solid, characters are spot on and the plot fast moving and engaging. The only reason I'm not putting it up for review is because it seems to be abandoned near its completion. It also has Buffy and Faith on the opposing side of the NCIS crew which is refreshing.

4.5/5. A great read.

You Only Live Twice (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8286070/1/)

It's a crossover between Naruto and My Little Pony written by pudgypudge, and in my opinion it's the only good crossover between the two series. My only complaint is that Naruto feels more like an OC wearing his name. The Naruto in the story doesn't remember any of his ninja life, nor does he have any ninja skills, and his personality is far removed from his canon personality, though it is close to how a lot of authors characterize him towards the end of his shinobi career.

Despite that, it is well written and an all together enjoyable read, and the author has a history of completing stories and updating quickly. In my opinion it's a solid 4/5 with potential to rise, and if nothing else, a good time waster if you need one.

More or less, this.

They're decent time-wasters and won't require that the reader have a functioning brain, but they aren't exactly engaging on the same level as something by (insert DLP author here). It's sad to say, but barring DLP, Pudgy is in the upper echelon of Naruto writers.

No, Howdy more or less has it right.

I mean, Pudgy does tend to complete half of his stories. That said, they tend to be pretty damn boring. Naruto/Temari is one of my favorite pairings and he wrote one of the longest complete stories...but it goes nowhere. And add in the fact that he returned with a MLP xover?

Pass.

I didn't think this was anywhere near 4.5/5 territory. At absolute best I felt that the first 8 chapters (all I managed to read) were 3/5 -- and then only if you are a fan of / familiar with both series in question. I'll second this recommendation. Mostly lighthearted time travel fic, and there's some semblance of a brand new plotline showing up in the last chapter. Really curious where this will go, and has a great update rate.

Worth a read! This particular quote in an early chapter (I skimmed a bit through the first chapter where things were getting set-up) made me laugh:He had not only combed every inch of his apartment for his headband, he'd also sorted all of the random junk in it into much neater systems, taking advantage of the storage facilities at his disposal – i.e. dresser, closet, et cetera.Something about referring to a closet as a "storage facility" just made me laugh harder than it probably should have.

But yeah. So far so good on this story, though I haven't finished it yet (it's currently around 41k).

I have read the first four chapters so far, but I don't think I will be continuing to read this. I know its my own personal tastes, but the fact that it's building towards a relationship between Naruto and Hinata kills most of my motivation to read this. Also, I know its kind of a random nitpick, but the fact that Naruto refers to the relationship he wants to have with Hinata as "Lovers" just sounds overly dramatic for a teenager to say.

I agree--this was a well put together, nasty little story. I found the ending to be effective as a final twist of the knife evincing how cruel the world is.

It's hard to take a site seriously that has Joe H as local celeb. Folks need to recognize that Naruto knew there's no way he would have been able to kill someone innocent, so he went out of his way to locate someone who had it coming. Even then it was hard for him. This much was in character--and that was kind of the point of the piece, to take a canon Team 7 and turn them loose against a brutally non-canon test.

I'm kinda disappointed that you guys didn't mention this story...

NARUTO
Win some, lose some by obsidian dreamer (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5571816/1/Win_Some_Lose_Some)

I actually posted that story up for review (https://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=19598), but I don't think you guys got past the first chapter.

This is a great little light heart story, though it gets cliche a few chapters in.

Story is set up as a series of one shots, some are in the same series, others are original.

I would like to change my initial reviews of this story...

Plot: 4/5
Grammar: 2.5/5
Total: 3/5

Guilty, light hearted read.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. Added Genre.

BBC Sherlock / Harry Potter Xover - http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7771687/1/Symphony

I enjoyed reading this. Two problems with it though, (1) it's going to be slash apparently and (2) it's short. Also the author (esama) has a lot of stories so I have no idea if this one is on the to-update list or not. I think some of their stuff has been well received here but this is the only one of their stories that I can remember reading off the top of my head.

Anyway. Harry (around eighteen?) is on the run and manages to end up in 1980 near the house of one Sherringford Holmes, father of Mycroft (eight) and Sherlock (baby). It's a vaguely fluffy fic that appears to have some semblace of plot appearing as well. I found Mycroft amusing in a good way and Sherringford to be a genuinely interesting OC (even if I can't picture Holmes Sr. being much like this at all).

*shrug* Harry is determined to do something about the timeline and keeping things from going to hell but he's not sure what yet. At least he isn't ignoring the problem.

Almost Recommended indeed. If it was a bit longer and didn't have slash planned I might put it up in For Review.

Edit: Maybe I should have put this in the HP Almost Recommended thread, but since the "world" in question is that of Sherlock I auto-posted here. Dunno which would be more correct.

Esama writes good stories, but is primarily a slash author. Probably best to keep it here.

Yeah -- being slash by itself doesn't prevent a story from making it into the library, but it does make it a hell of a lot harder. No pun intended.

Unless this story gets updated to 40k+ words, obtains an interesting/active plot, and keeps the high quality without allowing slash to play too major a role... it'll stay here.

In other words, yeah. It'll stay here.

Symbiosis by ConstructiveWriter (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7917071/1/Symbiosis)

One of the better pokemon stories out there. Though at the beginning the writing isn't good enough to consider this story for review, but as it goes it improves.

Pikachu and the Team Rocket(Jessie and James) are one of the redeeming qualities of the fic.

Wow... Pikachu is a megalomaniacal ham. It's all sorts of amazing. I'm rather glad I was bored enough to try this fic out.

It definitely doesn't qualify for the library (at least the first 6 chapters I've read), but it's fairly entertaining. Nice find.

I just finished re-watching Seasons 1&2 of Sherlock and, as usual after I've encountered media that I enjoy, I went in search of fanfiction. Many of these are crossovers with Harry Potter, because that at least sometimes allows for some version of a plot that isn't Holmes and Watson getting their sexy on.

Some of the following are closer to the "barely readable" end of the spectrum than the "almost good" end, so you are warned (though in the interest of not listing everything I read I did leave out some of the worst ones that I bookmarked anyway). ...And damn, I was expecting there to be a lot of slash fiction in this category, but it's like there's almost nothing else and it's really effing irritating.

I'm only gonna link to the stories that were either short but complete or WIP that were at least 10-15k long. There were a bunch of semi-promising starts to longer stories that petered out well before reaching the 10k marks.
Why Neville Really Hates Baker Street (http://archiveofourown.org/works/432462/chapters/732366)
Neville is dropping off a gift for a friend of his Gran's when he meets the world's only consulting detective. Sherlock is curious, and Neville simply wants to not have 'breaker of statute of secrecy' on his records.
The writing in this one was halfway decent but I found it to be pretty boring as nothing much happened. No real plot or anything.
The Case of the Unwelcome Owl (http://archiveofourown.org/works/120495)
"So," said John, feeling out of his depth once again. "An owl." It was the same mild, politely curious tone of voice with which he had previously found himself uttering such things as: "So – three bags of frozen AB negative," and "So – a selection of human ears.""Goodness, John, with deductive prowess like that you'll soon be putting me in the shade," Sherlock said tartly. "Can't sneak anything past you, can we?"
I found this one to be somewhat amusing. Luna is Sherlock's cousin. I think it was complete. Still not worth a solid recommendation since, once again, nothing really happened in the fic.
A Study in Magic (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7578572/1/A_Study_in_Magic) (Please note that this is NOT the one in the DLP library of the same name -- that one is MUCH better, and this one is crossed with the BBC show instead of the original works)
When Professor McGonagall went to visit Harry Watson, son of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, to deliver his Hogwarts letter, she certainly wasn't expecting to find the cause behind Harry Potter's disappearance. BBC Sherlock HP crossover AU
This story is weird and creepy as hell in some ways, since Watson has inexplicably become female while looking EXACTLY THE SAME as he does in the TV show. So everyone always thinks he's a man. His name is still John. He is married to Sherlock. It's REALLY WEIRD. It is a 140k+ story though, and I skimmed most of it. A few parts seemed halfway decent. Most of it was just... a weird mix of fluff and weirdness, and not at all the standard DLP fare. I wouldn't "recommend" it I suppose, but it's easily the longest fic I came across that might qualify as "barely readable."
You'll Never Be Alone In The Bone Orchard (http://sherlock-flashfic.dreamwidth.org/19955.html)
John Watson meets Mycroft Holmes one day early. The world tilts slightly on its axis.
This one was actually pretty good. John meets Mycroft and starts working for him before he ever has a chance to meet Sherlock and things take a very different route. It's a complete one-shot, around 9k words.
The Road Trip Series (http://archiveofourown.org/series/10114)
Sherlock, John, and Lestrade on a road trip together, stuck in the same car for hours. The numbers are how long they have been on the road.
I actually found this to be somewhat funny. It's different at least. The last one wasn't as cool as the first couple though. It's not really a "proper fic" but if you're a fan of the characters and want to see them acting a bit stupid then have a go.
Living Lore (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6732555/1/Living_Lore)
London dreams of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
This is another complete and fairly short story. It's a bit of a mindscrew/horror too.
Routine Procedure (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8316155/1/Routine_Procedure)
A meeting at a broken-down red telephone box. Sherlock needs to make a call and Harry's just trying to get to work.
Just a short one-shot that's almost exactly what it says on the tin.
Whispers in Corners (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7311801/1/Whispers_in_Corners)
Everything started with a stumble - his new life in a new world as well as his surprisingly successful career as a medium. AUish HP x Sherlock, the BBC version not Victorian, crossover, warnings for eventual slash.
SLASH, sadly. I only put it here because (1) It's complete and (2) I liked what the author with Harry as "The Master of Death" enough that it outweighed my dislike of the completely unnecessary slash. Harry ends up in the "world" of Sherlock -- this is not the same universe/whatever as HP canon and the magical world doesn't exist. Harry is an adult. He uses the resurrection stone and works as a medium. It's reasonably cool. He meets Mycroft. It's still cool. He DATES Mycroft and it becomes less cool, though I suppose there's no reason why Mycroft himself can't be canonically gay. *shrug* At any rate, if you don't mind the slash too much I'd say it's worth a read.

A Brief Account of Life with Zombies (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6253167/1/A_Brief_Account_Of_Life_With_Zombies)
Sherlock thinks it's all a bit of a nuisance, John is having the time of his life, and Mycroft is Not Impressed. With anything, but mostly his minions' inability to provide a good cup of tea.
Another short (1k) one-shot that's almost exactly what it says on the tin.
Harry Potter of Baker Street (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6339646/1/Harry_Potter_of_Baker_Street)
Sherlock Holmes discovers family he never knew he had, and John Watson finds a child living in the cupboard. Crossover between BBC Sherlock and Harry Potter.
This one was actually, dare I say it, kind of cute. It was meant to be cute too, as someone has dropped off a four year old Harry with his long lost cousin Sherlock who has little idea what to do with him. There were some genuinely funny bits in it, but don't go into it expecting much of a plot -- Harry is four years old and remains so for the entirely of the 30k words or so that have been written. He does at least seem to act his age. Sherlock wants to rename him, John says no, and Sherlock often treats him like a dog (rewarding him with a cookie for staying somewhere when he is asked to, etc.). If you go into it expecting a humorous, fluffy, cute fic then you probably won't be too disappointed. If you go into it expecting something else you are out of luck.
The Box (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8139856/1/The_Box)
A teenage Sherlock wakes up in a hospital room with no memory of how he got there. Is it a conspiracy, or is he really ill?
This is... I don't know what this is. I think it was written by someone who works in a psychiatric hospital as a sort of "guidebook to how patients feel" or something. It features Sherlock, yes, but it's more like an essay in most places than it is a story. It's 100k words though and readable, but only if you feel like reading this sort of thing. As far as the quality of the actual story goes it's not that great, and I have no way of knowing if the other stuff about mental health is accurate or not, so YMMV. I skimmed more than read in many, many places.

Anyone know of any others? There were probably half a dozen more that I marked as "barely readable" in my mind, but they were either too short or just too plain poorly done in some way (there was one where a 12 year old Harry was acting as if he were 5, but otherwise the premise and writing was alright & another where Watson was dealing with perfectly legit PTSD brought on my the Baskerville ep when Sherlock dosed him with that drug, a cool fic idea, but it felt a little too angsty or OOC or something) to add to this particular list.

Oh, and I'll end with posting links to Ravenclaw Codex (https://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=8428) and Study in Magic (https://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=20552) -- the two Holmes / HP crossovers that actually made it into the DLP library, though both are crossovers with the original stories by Doyle. I prefer the second one to the first.

Using the filtered FFN search, I found one half-decent Naruto story.

Naruto

Ghost (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8116183/1/Ghost) by Onmysignalunleashwords

"Her face. I remember her face." A boy trained to kill is brought into the light. Grey, different Naruto heavily stealth based and Root trained, but not in the traditional sense. How will he cope with that most dangerous of foes: emotion?

As the premise says, Naruto is trained by Root. What makes this different from other Root!Naruto stories is that he isn't put into a team and doesn't have a rivalry with Sasuke. This alone puts it a step ahead of other stories. I can't say anymore without ruining the story, but in essence, this is a Sai!Naruto (without the ink) learning to deal with people.

If you want to be pragmatic, Sai is renamed Naruto and made into the Kyuubi jinchuuriki. The character playing Naruto isn't Naruto, but we never actually learn his real name because he's always referred as "baka" and is related to Dan and isn't a Uzumaki or has massive chakra capacity like Naruto.

Pacing is moderately good. Character development is very rapid in some case, and extremely slow in another. Author made some grammatical errors here and there -- but it's not severe enough to close the tab. At 100k+ words, it's a decent time waster.

I did a cursory search, and nothing showed up with the author's name on this forum. I'm hesitant to recommend this story for review because it still has some rough parts. I'd have to reread this story to refresh my memory as to why, but I feel that this is the case... it's not up to standard, but is a very decent time waster.

If I were to seriously rate this, it'd be a 2.5-3 out of 5.

Same Rating here.

Word of warning. The first chapter really rips off the trailer of the First Assassin's Creed. Im not even joking.

That said its an interesting AU if you can get past some of the dialogue reading as if it was robots speaking.

I swear there was one chapter with a dialogue sequence that reads as

"This is logical."

"Yes it is logical."
"Logical logical. Logical."

"Logical logical logical. Logical."

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

But I do like the take on the Retrieval mission.

The beginning is a bit slow but otherwise I really enjoyed reading it. The idea behind the plot is interesting and the execution is solid. I especially liked the idea of the Baka as that is something we don´t see often, even in this kind of story. Naruto is massive OC but still interesting to read.

The plot follows Canon closely in the beginning but now we see some nice diversions.
And the last few chapters were probably the best time-skip I had ever the pleasure to read.

I would give it 3-3,5 out of 5..

While he does overuse the word "logical" a bit, the only time I can think of that happening was when Naruto and Shino were trying to out-Spock each other, and it was written more as humor than anything else.

That said, there are some major issues in terms of secondary characterization in the fic, but it's a decent read. 3/5, decent read but you know there are issues if you have to use an AN to justify a character

I'm not sure if this has already been recced, but it's a decent Naruto/Mikoto time travel story. There are aspects of it that I originally thought were promising, but as yet haven't led to anything I was hoping for. The romance starts off okay, but it has since taken a down turn, unfortunately. Something about the author's depiction of the main pairing is just... wooden and uninteresting. Furthermore, the romance is currently taking up too much room in the story, much to the detriment of the overall plot. The author claims the romance 'arc' is about to end, so I haven't given up hope yet.

This is basically an example of a good start which then just falls apart. A shame, but maybe the author will redeem this story still. He just needs to focus on progressing the plot into interesting new territory based on the tremendous butterfly effect Naruto must have already created.

I dunno about that, especially since it was rather blindingly obvious Tobi was really Obito since Zombie!Madara showed up. I had money on it well before that (Kishimoto totally won me $1), but it was basically confirmed when Madara made his appearance.

Hopefully the author will have accounted for that in his initial planning. Probably hasn't, but I can dream.

Mario and the Spirit from the Outer Realm (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7419461/1/Mario-and-the-Spirit-from-the-Outer-Realm)
"When two elder brothers from two different worlds are forced to journey together the way they treat their younger siblings is changed forever."

It took me a few chapters to get into this, but once Luke (an OC) met Mario I started to enjoy it.

Basically there are 4 main characters -- Mario, Luigi, Luke, and Miles. Luke and Miles are brothers from the "real" world who are 12 and 6 respectively. Luke ends up in the "game" by accident, but it's played as if the Mario Universe is real in the sense that Mario and Luigi ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom by coming through from the real world (which is the same place that Luke and Miles inhabit).

It took me a bit to get used to the idea of the OCs, but like I said -- it got better once Mario and Luke actually met (around Chapter 10? I can't remember, but skip to there if you get bored early on and see what you think).

There are some slow parts. There are a lot of scenes with villains that I can't seem to get into as much, but that might be partly because I'm not all that up on Mario villains and who is who. The main storyline that keeps my interest is Mario's. Luigi's is alright. The other bits I read but sometimes skim.

Quantum Leap / Buffy the Vampire Slayer Crossover. Far better than I expected it to be -- probably a 3/5 actually, and worthy of the Recyling Bin. If you aren't familiar with Quantum Leap though it may not be that much fun for you.

For the uninitiated though, Quantum Leap was a show that aired from 1989-1993. Sam "leaped" into bodies of people in the past, basically possessing them, and "fixed" things in their lives that were going to go wrong. He had help from Al, a hologram, who was really in the future where Sam's body was. The people he "leaped" into would end up in his body in the future.

I rather thought that it was clever, even if it was slightly a cop out. Not like Orochimaru was stupid evil as a baby. At some point his standards slipped and he became crazy due to hell, I don't know since I don't follow canon that hard but it was something.

Like whatever that Bleach scientist character is, why not be a crazy scientist for the good guys? Orochimaru still has some morals but he wants power. With the deal he gets power and Konoha gets Orochimaru with morals.

I think that's the only reason why so many time-travel story have him hooking up with Mikoto.

Maybe it's just conservation of characters; since we only know a few female characters 15 years back in time (and one of them is Narutos mother) - she's the logical choice.

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles - Fiction Rated: T - English - General - Chapters: 33 - Words: 291,862 - Reviews: 548 - Updated: 9-14-12 - Published: 1-9-10 - - John C./Cameron

I was unable to find this mentioned anywhere else on this site, so I thought I would bring it up here.

The story is decent in my opinion and I have been following it for a couple years now. The author has just started writing the second half of the story again after having been on a break for about a year. The first half of the story deals solely with leading up to Judgement Day. It showcases John growing into a leader as well as a healthy amount of John/Cameron. I don't think it is library worthy since it seems to drag on at times, as well as a few other issues, but despite it all I still find myself looking forward to updates. A word of warning though, the beginning is kind of confusing due to all the original characters thrown in right off the bat. I would give it a 3/5.

Do you mean a) Sasuke goes back for the express purpose of finding Naruto banging his mother or b) Sasuke goes back in time for some other reason and happens to find Naruto already their being a motherfucker?

I assume this.

And yes, it would be awesome.

Becoming John Connor.

I'm on chapter 10 of this and I'm enjoying it thus far, despite having fairly rudimentary knowledge of the Terminator universe. It's not amazing, but definitely good if you're bored and looking for something to read.

Kay, I want to test the waters here before I put this up for review in the library.

Naruto - Rated: M - English - Adventure/Drama - Chapters: 12 - Words: 104,084 - Reviews: 122 - Favs: 302 - Follows: 331 - Updated: 9-14-12 - Published: 5-23-12 - Naruto U.

Its a fun little fic that I've been enjoying thus far. The last chapter compelled me to do this. It's a particularly interesting and detailed take on the Uchiha coup attempt. Looks like it is getting its own arc.

I'd have to call this a guilty pleasure, and instead of adventure/drama I would categorise it primarily as a hurt/comfort fic. The purpose of the OC main character is obviously to rescue Naruto from his shitty life and loneliness, after all. Once Naruto ends up at the Dancing Dragon and we're abruptly introduced to a bunch of civilian OCs, I got sick of reading it and gave it up. The plot just wasn't gaining my interest, and kept annoying me with unnecessary divergences. I thought the characterisation of a four-year-old Naruto was decent, but I didn't like the interaction between the Sandaime and the main character at all.

I've been reading this myself, and while I generally agree that this isn't an incredible piece of work, I do have to say that it's better than 2.5. The character development is indeed interesting, and just like in real life sometimes things change quickly.. and sometimes they take time to percolate and brew.

I have to admit I do enjoy the dialogue, often enough it makes me smile, and the overarching theme of a more dangerous and deadly Shinobi world is one that I appreciate greatly. Assassin!Naruto is an excellent protagonist, in my mind.

His conversation with Shino was funny as hell, despite the two going on about Logic This and Logic That.

Personally I find that most of the characters remain true to form, whilst there are important differences based on the fact that important events went differently, they are still easily recognizable. And the changes in them are believable.

3.5/5 with the potential to reach 4/5 should the author go back and do some grammatical editing and some dialogue/internal monologue trimming.

Rewritten (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8212573/1/Rewritten) got updated. A cop out if there ever was one.

Nice guy Orochimaru that is sickened by his future self

>_>

I am enjoying this currently.
But now I want to read a time travel story in the vein of A Black Comedy with some Young Jiraya+Naruto debauchery.

Meh it isn't awful, but it suffers for the type of story that it is. I admit things might improve, I gave up after four chapters, but it isn't my kind of thing. Although I'm convinced now that if a story has the words fox, kitsune, or anything similar in the title 9 times out of 10 it's probably going to suck.

I'd give it a 2/5 from what I read.

I liked this story. It gives an account of what would happen if Ned stark lived. It uses many different POVs and it was nicely handled.

Alone Together by Failte200 (Kim Possible story) "Kigo. Kim and Shego are straight, archenemies, and trapped in an alternate reality, just the two of them. This is how they fall in love."

I found it pretty good, actually. There were a few things that annoyed me about it, but I haven't seen the actual show in years and I still found this easy enough to follow. At 100k+ words and complete, it's a pretty decent way to kill an afternoon or two. It's femslash, obviously.

So I went and I updated that Submission Archives (http://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=16843) post over the HP section, and slapped togeher a new Other Fandoms (http://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?p=591144#post591144) edition. None of you really care about that, so we can move on to the reason I'm posting this here.

Any HP related items, regardless of dominant fandom, has been posted in the HP version, for sake of simplicity. Youre free to keep posting them here, if the dominant fandom is not HP, but the links will go in HP anyway.

Yeah, that was a good timewaster with a dash of nostalgia. Don't think I've ever read a femslash fic before either.

I'm only on chapter 13, but it's been a pretty good read for the most part. I will say, though, that
after they return to The World, the story seems to slow to an absolute crawl compared to the first half. It was hard enough getting through Kim's homophobia/insecurity the first time, and that was when they were all alone with no one else's opinions to care about. Now it's just a pain to read about a teenage highschooler's shame in her sexuality. Especially after she had already dealt with it years prior. Damn, that memory loss really fucked them over.
I'll keep reading it because I do want to finish it and see where it goes, but I'm practically reading this story at a paragraph per sitting now so it might take a while for a final review.

Nothing but Trouble (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5001646/1)

Found this recently, and a nice contrast to most other Naruto fics. Naruto is a womanizing, violence-prone leader of a hidden village of Missing-Nin. Starts off about 7 years after the original series.

Ah, Mr. Cynical. His stories are amusing if nothing else, and the writing is sound, but they all follow the same basic plot. Protagonist gets mysterious power up that is hinted at, takes several levels in badass, and makes everyone else weep with envy. Girl that was mean to him in childhood sees this, creams her panties, and is denied for a girl who saw his potential all along.

Search only turned up the quality naruto thread, which doesnt really have all that much info. Found Naze? (http://m.fanfiction.net/s/5287615/6/) by Oramo.

Anyone else read it and have an opinion on this one?

Naze never did anything for me, good idea but the execution left alot to be desired. Still it's a decent time waster if you don't mind its faults.

I'll throw this one out there.

Things I like:
Naruto isn't stupid nor is he a 'genius'.
Kazuzu is done pretty well IMO.
It's two chapters away from being finished apparently.
No shadow clones or rasengan.
decent level of writing.
The plot is at this point all original, aside from the Chunin exams and one other point it has very little to do with the actual manga.

There isn't much I don't like, it's definitely not library worthy but it worth reading for a decent version of a missing nin Naruto who isn't going to go back to Konoha for the sake of the plot.
