Or even favorite author. I Got a Nook Touch for christmas, and I'm looking for books to load it up with.

Not looking for anything particularly specific with this (sorry if the request is too vague), I just want to build up a big "To Read" list.

Don't neglect to mention something because it seems too obvious (ie, if Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter/Dresden Files is your favorite, tell me even though you'd be right in assuming I've probably read it). While I'm bound to get a lot of reccomendations for things I've already read, I'm certain there are loads of very popular books I've missed. Same goes for books reccomended in other topics: while I have been looking through old threads on this forum for reccomendations, I'm sure I have missed/overlooked some excellent books.

Looking for things from all genres. I'm a big fan of both fantasy and sci-fi, but I don't want to miss out on good books from other genres that I typically neglect to read.

Supposedly there are some pretty large fan communities dedicated to the darker aspect of the books. Sounds like an interesting place to check out.

If you like Harry Potter you may want to check out this stuff called "fan fiction".

    :p

(I knew someone would do it, but I did invite it)

An hour and 13 minute difference. Not too sure what's going on there.

Anyway, definitely A Song of Ice and Fire by GRRM.

Wow, tough one. Right now, my favorite would be VALIS by Philip K. Dick.

It's always been a toss up between The Dresden Files and The Kingkiller Chronicles for me. Right now, I'll definitely have to go with The Dresden Files.

    A few favourites :

The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski (from the series the game The Witcher is based on)

    The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

    Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

And, for local flavor : Old Goriot by Honoré de Balzac, The Plague and The Outsider by Albert Camus, any play by Jean-Paul Sartre, and Promise at Dawn as well as The Life Before Us by Romain Gary (I can't guarantee you'll find translations for those latter two).

EDIT : also thirding (I guess) Portus' rec for To Kill a Mockingbird

Going entirely by how much I liked it at the time that I first read it:

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

I don't think I've since loved a book as much as I loved PoA upon first read at age 11.

Of course, now there are several books that I think are better. But then those books are all more recent. In 10 years time I'll surely like other books more than them. So if I have to say which book my favourite is, I'll try to do it in a time-independent way, by making it relative to first-read.

And I do still love PoA, though I know it inside-out. If I ever need comforting, reading PoA can send me back to happy days.

Darreb Shan... By Darren Shan. I thought DLP disapproved of Self Inserts? D:

This seems a good list to start with. Especially the bolded ones.

Also; I AM DISAPPOINT, DLP. Why no Scott Lynch and Gentlemen Bastards?
