So if you haven't heard by now, they are making a Jack Reacher film with Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. It's an adaptation from Lee Child's book One Shot.

Personally I hate that they chose Tom Cruise for this role. Reacher is described as 6'5" and between 220-250 pounds depending on the book. But Lee Child did hand pick him. All in all I am looking forward to the movie.

Saw a preview for this at Spider-Man yesterday. Looks like a typical revenge/vigilante movie. Also, isn't Tom Cruise a midget?

 

The great thing about movies is that you can create the illusion of height through various camera angles or by having a generally short cast.

I'm sure he won't look 6'5, but he won't look tiny either.

 

Yeah, I really don't like the casting choice. I know they can make it look bigger, but he's really described as just being bigger then pretty much everyone else. They did pick a great book to make the movie for though, will be interested to see how it goes.

 

I'm disappointed in this, because he's not at all how I've ever pictured Reacher. In any way. He's a half decent actor, but he's definitely not worth the fuss he gets.

Any idea if they're basing it on one of the books? Or is it a unique storyline?

 

Ian Mckellen isn't twice as tall as Elijah Wood but hey, that works out.
If this is just another one badass cop who plays by his own rules fighting through a mob of faceless thugs movie, it'd be pretty easy to cast a bunch of short guys for the thugs, considering their only lines would be grunting and screams of pain.

 

Going to be based off of One Shot I believe.

 

It isn't just a matter of height. Reacher is described as being physically closer to a caveman than the average human - at one point, the sheer density of his skull stops a bullet. He really ought to be played by someone like the Rock.

 

Yeah, the height thing doesn't really matter. What matters is that Cruise just doesn't fit how people have pictured the character based on how he's described in the books. If Lee Child really hand selected Cruise then either he did so for reasons other than thinking he was right for the role, or he has his own unique interpretation of what he's written that he's completely failed to convey in any of his books.

And in other news One Shot is one of the more average Reacher novels, so we'll see how that goes.

 

Yeah, Reacher is supposed to be a physical specimen...tall and huge.
Fun book series, but I doubt the movie will be any good.
