there are alot of spells out there in the book so i was just woundering do you make up your own or get them from somewhere else?

 

The basic spells most authors use are made by JKR herself. These includes the unforgivables, Stunners, Summoning Charm and the like. Basically all those whose incantations are given in the books by JKR.

The rest of the spells you find are made by the authors themselves. Just think of what you want to happen and summarize it in one English word, then use a translator to translate it to latin (mostly) and distort it a little to make it sound like a spell. And lo! you made a spell yourself.

 

I use a certain translator to translate from english, then from that language to latin.

I CANNOT STAND stories where the author is too lazy to come up with their own spells, and instead has entire battles where ppl are casting tickle/disarming/minor cutting/pain/ and the killing curse.

You can't freaking expect me to believe that Lord Voldy gets off on pain, and yet doesn't know anything better then "crucio". And if you want a hated enemy dead.. isn't that better then giving him a quick painless death via Avada????

For example, one of the spells I've made, slowly peels the skin off the entire body, and then surrounds the victim in a nimbus of cold air. The cold air blowing around the person stimulates the nerve endings for pain a great deal higher then the unforgivable.

Now isn't that better then some idiot who just writes "Voldemort was mad. Really mad. He randomly yelled "Crucio" into the room. Yeah he was that badass evil."

"Hundreds upon hundreds of death eaters are outside everyone! They're going to be trying to KILL, RAPE, and MAIM you! Lets cast tickle charms and stunners, that way they can just have someone mutter "Finite" and go back to killing us! I mean, we don't want to harm them do we, we're not evil!"

... i like to think ive got a better imagination that most... i make my own and just use latin or sometihng similar for it...

and yeah.. it is EXTREMELY annoying to find those stories that make it seem that no one knows more than tickling charms and unforgivebles ... bah... those idiots give authors bad names!

Trust me FF.net reviewers will nitpick about anything, phony spell names that aren't latin are one of them, lol.

I beta'd a story last year, where the author just made up names and they tore into him good for it. It is hard to focus on a awesome story, when the author writing it uses totally off the wall spell words you see over and over

"ushelrahb!" "medicva!" or simply uses stuff like DIE! or PAIN!

Just ruins the immersion.

 

A Marvelous Translator

this is where i get most of the incantations ... Latin, French, And many more! .. some times its not very accurate, but its as close as i can find *shrugs*

There was one on the Notre Dame as well that wasn't too bad! I used that before the other, its a little more accurate than InterTran's

Yep.. I like that one when it comes to translating for spells..

Ive been thinking of adding a bit of japanese spells to my current fic to give it a bit of pizzaz but *shrugs* eh.. not sure.. but Jeffery Friedl's Japanese to English Dictionary is the best I've found... ought to add all these to the Links section or something..

you could come up with madd spell wit sansript / sanskrit ( it another dead language that was used through out the world)

 

No mon cher ami, Sanskrit is very much alive here in India. School children who take full Sanskit have a yearly 100 marks paper and those who take half have to take 50, LOL. This is upto grade 10.

 

true but Sanskrit is as old as latin
