I couldn't decide where to post this, move it if needed, but just spread the word.

Steven Brust (known for his work in the Gaiman's Book of Dreams and Vlad Taltos novels) wrote a Firefly novel and it has been released under a creative commons license.

My Own Kind of Freedom - A Firefly Novel by Steven Brust

    It is pretty good.

That's awesome news, Firefly is definitely one of my favorite shows, but unless I'm mistaken, this goes under 'Video games, movie, books discussion' because it's not about HP fan fic. Anyways, nice find...

Nice find. Firefly is the best SciFi show ever...well maybe not as good as the Twilight Zone, but better than pretty much everything else. Besides nonjon's fic, there isn't really any other good Firefly fics on fanfiction.net

Erm, wow. How often do authors of professional calibre write fanfic novels?

Just finished it. It was pretty damn good. I thought that he really captured the attitudes and mannerisms of the crew pretty well.

    In sci-fi? Pretty often.

Sci-fi authors are as geeky as we are ;)

I really wish someone would write up something for a series like a Song of Ice and Fire. Unless they already did, and I just don't know it yet.

That would be cool. I know this sounds silly, but I'm waiting for a good author to do a HP/Bleach crossover. I have no idea how it would work, but pretty much everything else has been done and I think if done by the right author, it could have great potential.

I've heard that many big-time anime/manga artists, even if they are the creators of popular, successful comics and shows, will sometimes make doujinshi of other people's characters, simply because they are fans of the material.

I've only read the first Vlad Taltos book because, until recently, most of the books were scarce around here. Now they are available in collected editions (but the thought of essentially re-purchasing the first book annoys me :)).

    I did enjoy Jhereg, though.
