Muggles and Notice-me-not Charms
This question has been bugging me for a while.
If a muggle knows that a notice-me-not charm is in place or are focusing on the general area, can they resist the spell even though they possess no magic? |

A. We have a thread for questions that don't need a whole thread.
B. The Notice-Me-Not charm is a fanon invention so prevalent that people mistake it for canon. It was introduced six or more years ago, ostensibly to hide Severus Snape's bulging man-pregnancy. C. Given [B.], there's not a muggle we'd ask who would want to figure out if they could see Snape's swollen belly. D. If you're thinking of the Muggle-Repelling Charm, I'd say that they have no chance whatsoever. It'd be like your dog trying to answer a riddle.

Damn, I actually thought it was a canon spell - probably one used by the Ministry for events like the Quidditch World Cup, or Hermione casting it during her camping holiday/book seven.
Looks like I need to re-read the books. ... Or just be a lazy fucker, and listen to them in audio-book form.

There has never been any mention in the books of "notice-me-not" charms (unless I missed something in the 5+ reads of each book, which... well, I guess is still possible). I'm not as avid a ff reader as most on here, but I'm sure they did come from outside canon. What is mentioned is are Muggle Repelling Charms, which do prevent things from being seen by Muggles. Obviously.
But no, I don't think there'd be any chance of Muggles resisting. How would they know to even try? And I think it would sort of defeat the purpose of the spell. Wizards rely on these spells to safeguard their identity, after all... they'd better be foolproof. Hogwarts is supposed to have a preventative charm that makes it appear as an old ruin to Muggles, while at the same time they remember an urgent appointment that they've missed. Considering that Hogwarts has apparently not had any serious breaks in security for a few thousand years, I'd say the spells are pretty reliable.

On a more arbitrary note, the fanon Notice-Me-Not charm always reminded me of the phrase, "He loves me, he loves me not," going along with some girl in a dress plucking out petals from a flower. Last edited by Devour; 05-27-2012 at 01:51 AM. |

^ this. Someone needs to read a few Founder's Age fanfics and remember when they built Hogwarts.

Okay yes, I messed up. I had some random date in my head for some reason. But over a thousand years... point still stands.

No, actually. Hogwarts is a TARDIS. It's just been in Scotland for a thousand years.

Founders walk to the top of a hill.
Hufflepuff: Wow! Slytherin: What? Huflepuff: Anyone else see that castle appear out of nowhere? Doctor runs out of castle. Doctor: Howdoyado. Mind watching this for a bit until I get back? Thanks. Doctor runs off into forbidden forest. Gryffindor: Huh.
