After watching the TV show, Legend of the Seeker I have been wondering about the books. Anyone here read the series? any good?

Read the entire series. It sucks. Boring characters. Cliche plot. Racism against other cultures, etc, etc, same old Medieval garbage. I thought it would get better, so I kept reading. Turns out it didn't.

 

I personally loved it when I read it.

It's definitely worth a read, to see whether its something that you can enjoy, or not. Frankly, if you can stomach the TV series, you'll probably love the books.

 

It used to be my favorite series, before I realized how hard Goodkind tries to force you to bend to his philosophy. The books are okay. If you take it as a fantasy and ignore the philosophy and blatant preaching by Goodkind, they can be a really fun read.

Terry Goodkind, however, is a douche.

The series blows so hard, I don't know how you managed to watch it, much less become curious about Goodkind's work because of it.


On the books proper, I loved them when I was 15, but then I stopped.

Maybe it's because of the rampant political propaganda behind every motherfucking line Richard has.

Weirdly enough, Faith of the Fallen is probably the most blatantly ZOMG!Capitalism Rules!!11!!one1!! of the lot, yet it's the only one I'd consider re-reading.

 

First couple books were good, but the series goes downhill quickly. Probably one of the only series that I didn't finish once I started. Seen a few episodes of the TV series, and it what I saw was awful.

Also, Terry Goodkind, Jim Butcher, and every fantasy author is the same person - check their pictures at the back of the books.

 

Its kind of like the Wheel of Time, first book or two are good, then the main character get way overpowered, and then the plot takes a dive for the worse. Only The Sword of Truth also adds rampant political posturing, plus Goodkind has an ego the size of Russia. Also the Wheel of Time is much better overall.

 

Stating Opinion as fact. D: WoT is way to dry for me to get past the first book. Sword of Truth, if nothing else, is colorful by contrast. But It can be fun.

 

I read most of the series in one go and loved it, although, in retrospect, it does have major flaws, namely, lots of filler and Goodkind trying too hard to get his point across. Nevertheless, it is a refreshing change to read about characters that actually use their heads and completely reject what Goodkind calls "conventional morality".

 

The TV series was more... I guess a guility pleasure, but I like the idea of the story and knowing in most cases the books are far better I thought I would ask. Guess I'm going to give the first book a try.

The TV series is... well, I wouldn't call it good, but the actresses playing Kahlan and Cara are hot, and Richand and Zedd are decently cast. It likes to fuck SoT canon in the ass, though, which can be a tad... well, irritating, particularly as an old fan of the books.

As for the book series... well, it really depends on your tolerance for filler and lengthy dialogue. The first book was decent, second book was a bit better, third and fourth were both excellent, fifth was okay, and the sixth, Faith of the Fallen, remains one of my favourite novels of all time. Fuck the philosophy, I loved that book because Goodkind wrote good characters, nailbitingly nice action sequences, and fantastic atmosphere.

The series goes downhill fast from there. None of the books after FotF are worth a damn, IMO. In fact, I like to believe the series ended at book six. Still, the first six books have some crowning moments of awesome, and I can't say that about a lot of works of fiction. They're worth a check, if you're interested - in my opinion, they're a bit better than WoT, but that's just me.

PS - if you do read them, keep in mind they're graphic as fuck at points, and that any similarities to WoT are purely coincidental (Goodkind has never read the series).

Also, prepare for plenty of straw men, logical fallacies, double standards and rape.

In fact, the only 'thing' (Goodkind seems to use this word a lot; dunno why) more prevalent than rape is political commentary (particularly after the fourth book).

It's as if, one day, you're walking home from the bus stop, feeling pretty good, when you're suddenly surrounded by Jehovah's Witnesses... and you can't escape for the next twelve blocks it takes to reach your house.

 

Eh, I lost intrest around book 5 or so... when Richard started just wanking around trying to power up, and all that mess with his woman hit the fan.

It's been so many years though, so I can't really recall the details, but certain scenes and sections WERE pretty damn amazing and graphic.

I don't get where the Goodkind bash comes from, IMO people like him write amusing shit.

I'll just recommend you to try out Malazan Book of the Fallen -series instead.

 

I read halfway through the 2nd book then stopped. The first book is great but there are so many grammatical errors in the second that it made my eyes bleed.

 

Alot of people who I know that like fantasy like these books, a lot, I wasn't a huge fan but that was more personal preference than anything being fundamentally flawed within the book.

Another good fantasy series is Shadowmarch by Tad Williams.

 

I read this series back in high school and while it was fun to read the first two books, I really got tired of the constant commie-bashing he does. I don't mind it if it's just once in a while, but at some point it felt like every other sentence had Richard thinking about or talking about the evils of communism and socialism. The whole thing felt a bit too self-righteous to me so I just stopped reading.

Also, it was kind of weird how Richard went all dictator on everyone.
