A Mother In Law's Love by Perspicacity - M

I'm hesitant to submit one of my own stories for Library consideration, but I completed it not too long ago and I honestly think it's as good as some of my other stories in the Library.

Title: A Mother In Law's Love
Author: Perspicacity
Rating: M
Genre: Humor/Adventure
DLP Category: Humor/Parody or maybe Time Travel
Pairing: Harry/Ginny or Harry/Molly (I don't want to spoil it)
Chapters: 7
Words: 43,613
Updated: November 5, 2010
Published: March 6, 2009

Status: Complete, novella length (45k words)
Summary: Distraught over Ginny's death in the final battle, Harry gambles desperately and travels back in time to set things right. Unfortunately, not everything goes as planned. A twist on the classic Soul Bond tale.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4905771/1/

It's my irreverent take on time travel, Soul Bonds, Goblin etiquette, homunculi, the Weasleys, Harry's returning to Hogwarts as a teacher, etc. Told in first person narrative. I was aiming to make each chapter more audacious than the last. I figure it deserves placement in the Recycling Bin at least...

You mad bro?

This story has everything we in DLP look for in a fic. Consistent characterizations, gripping plot hooks, crippling humor, and a badass Harry. 5/5 man

I've heard good things about this story, even if it personally isn't my cup of literary tea.

Will have to read it in full after I wake up.

It's borderline criminal that this already isn't in the library. Fantastic job here, Pers.

Actually that's 15/5, but who cares because this story is awesome.

Well.... it's decent enough, but if I must be honest, these days I often judge stories by how much I want to (or end up) skimming them. And to be frank, I found long stretches of the story quite boring, and I mainly finished because you're a DLP mainstay. Certainly better than much of the horrendous crap out there where I have to click "close" after 1000 words of nonsense, terrible writing, or both. But I wouldn't put it any higher than maybe 3.5/5 or so... although I suppose I can round up for the voting in the thread.

Interesting, without a doubt.

You are the only fanfic writer who parenthesises more than I do:

Quote:
I pushed past the annoying twat and looked up to see the gaggle of Weasleys, then lost the battle with my grin, as the joy at seeing them again just wasn't letting go. Charlie, whom I remembered losing his legs and bleeding out from Rudolphus's curse, was standing between the twins, who had been incinerated in the Diagon Alley inferno. And Ginny, the love of my life, my reason for being, was alive and whole, and being smothered by one of her mother's patented hugs...
I think a solid 4/5: Good.

And I <3 that Less Wrong loved it.

Skullrutter grinned, exposing rows of dark, serrated teeth, his face lit up at finding a client apprised of Goblin custom. "And you, Harry Potter, may thine heir's dagger blood itself first not in thy back, but in thine enemy's."

I made a fist with my right hand and pounded it heavily upon his desk. "And may thine enemies tremble before thee. And may their wives break their hips from thine own powerful pelvic thrusts!"

Skullrutter stood, eyes wide, and leered at me. "And may the life blood of thine enemies flow in champagne fountains at thine exclusive Country Club during the wedding reception of thy first born daughter!"

I leaped upon the desk and roared, "And may thy chiropractor learn his weirding ways from a gentle and at least moderately competent instructor! And may he keep his fingernails trimmed!" I kicked the Goblin hard in the face, splitting his lip.

He staggered to his feet, spit blood upon the floor, and flourished a blackened scimitar. "And may thy love interest keep an open mind in the bedroom!" He swatted me hard on the left shin with the flat of the blade.

"And may he or she swallow when called upon!" He struck the other shin.
I've read this story numerous times while being bored but these lines really got my goat. Good story and hope you write more on your others. 5/5.

When I found this thread, I assumed a new user was reposting it, as it had never crossed my mind that this wasn't in the library already.

Awesome as always Pers.

This.

However there were several moments when I cringed while reading this. When Harry asked Arthur permission to court his daughter, in front of everyone, right after she just got done telling him she didnt want to be with him.

Library worthy but I think you tried a bit too hard to give this a 5/5.

You're too humble Pers. Every time you post something you make sure to mention that you're not sure how good it is, or if it's library worthy. Even when people mention you in lists of authors they like, you say that you're not sure what you've done to be counted in their company. I can see why you're a little more hesitant to mention your IRL accomplishments as they're relatively well-known at this point, but there's no need to be so self-effacing. You're a good author, get over it.

I don't know. I see that it was expertly written, I can see that Pers is a genius, but still. While I laughed a lot, if it weren't Pers who wrote it, I would have stopped. T'was nice as a crack-fic, and it had these awesome moments, it just wasn't interesting during the rest of the time.
That said, this is definitely worthy of a 4.5/5, because of the solid writing and the awesome moments here and there.
Edit:I forgot to mention how weird it was, and my constant wtf state while reading it.

3.5/5 for me. Rounded to 4.
I liked the fic, but to be honest, it wasn't a case of me itching to read more. I skimmed towards the end anyway. Only giving this 4 instead of 3 because it was written well enough.

First of all, Pers, good show. I honestly hadn't read this all the way through until now. I know some people didn't like all the little details and skimmed through parts of your fic, and I regret that for them. It's the little things that I really appreciated about your fic here, most of all the occasional alliteration-laced curses (Mab's muff, for one, was lulz ).

I thought the take on Soul Bonds was over the top and handled crack!enough to be hilarious, even all the way at the end. I enjoyed this romp through more minds (and whatever passes for a phoenix brain) more than I'll care to admit. Well played, indeed.
5/5.

+3 points for awesome goblin scene
+2 points for awesome Fawkes
-1 point for Molly Weasley as a central character.

Excellent work, chap.

My feelings on the story are summed up perfectly in my posts in the WbA thread:

http://forums.darklordpotter.net/sho...1&postcount=47

http://forums.darklordpotter.net/sho...3&postcount=58

One of the funniest and most crack-addled stories I've had the pleasure of reading.

15/5 from me, just like from the mathematically-challenged shouldabeenadog.

Good story, but there were times that I found myself skimming it. Easily a 4/5 though, and I may change my vote to a 5/5 after I reread it. I'm guessing that reading it all in one go will help it out since my memory may have forgotten some of the things in between chapter updates.

Ah, it's nice to see this one here. I remember back when you first had the signature of Ginny asking Molly if she should swallow, and then finally reading the scene at last... hah.

That said, humor abounds, and while I suppose that some polish is a given for most anything, I'll still go for 4.5/5, rounded up.
