So..uh...yeah..this is happening. Found this out when I saw a news article about Manu Bennett playing Allanon. Gotta say, I pictured Allanon being less built, but Manu carries a gravitas to his acting that is surreal. Looking forward to it.

I'm torn between "Hell yeah, more channels accepting fantasy, that could lead to more book-to-television deals"

    and

    "Jesus fuck, MTV? No."

My fingers are crossed that MTV will go bold and do an awesome job. As long as it doesn't turn out like the Sword of the Seeker or whatever that crap was I'll be happy.

I never read these books. How good are they?

Edit: And I liked the Legend of the Seeker show. Cara was the best! (Then again, I never read those books either)

The Shannara books are very similar to your typical high fantasy series in the tradition of Lord of the Rings. There are so many individual series underneath this banner, but it really started to become it's own world in the second or third series he wrote. The magic is much more prevalent than Lord of the Rings I would say.

It's been years since I read them, but they kept me entertained.

I only ever got halfway through the first Shannara book but it reminded me very much of Lord of the Rings, except every character is an asshole.

The network responsible for the worst programming on tv picking up the worst fantasy I've ever fucking read. It's a Christmas miracle!

I guess if they were going to start with a book for Shannara might as well be Elfstones. Since second book > first book.

I wouldn't call it the worst, more mediocre than anything. Later books ranged from mediocre to fricking awesome. I understand the need to start with Elfstones though..

I keep confusing this one with that other "Sword Of" series. The authors have the same first names too.

I've heard both are shitty though, so neither are on my reading list. And even if I had read it, I wouldn't trust MTV at all.

The series starts off bland like has been stated, but once it really gets into the more Druid characters I really enjoyed it. Also, the later books actually showing the world was surprisingly well done.

The base for the world is an apocalyptic earth. Dwarves? Human who have stayed underground for centuries after nuclear fallout. Orcs? Radiation.

Elves/Magic are a bit different though.

His Landover series is pretty hilarious though.

    Haha. Nice.
I just started reading this series on my new Kindle (Yeah, I got greedy and got the cheapest one to just read fantasy novels).

First impression of reading the series is that the characters are... ummm, oddly shallow and abrupt.
Somewhat like Gandalf and the Dwarfs' appearance in The Hobbit, but The Hobbit had the advantage of being lighthearted and fairy-tale like in tone.

And that's another amusing thing. Azog the Defiler as Allanon. XD

Been so long since I read this series, but I loved it when I first read it. But I also loved some really shit fanfiction when I first got into it so...
