Though I've been a House M.D. fan for a long time, I've only recently gotten interested in the fanfiction. I looked around ff.net, and I can't seem to find anything except crap. Can anyone here recommend me some fic? I'd prefer House/Cameron or House/Patient of the Week, but anything that's not House/Cutter!Chase would be welcome at this point.

 

Been crawling through a cesspit of House fanfictions for the past few days: it's all romantic filth. His intellect, which makes him distinctive, is completely absent. And the writers have an overwhelming desire to 'fix' him, which makes me wonder what show were they watching anyways.

Still, didn't expect there to be much quality fanfic in this particular fandom. Not only is the transition of mediums hard, but you also have to be erudite, or, at least, give the illusion of being so, to capture the main character. Not a feat fit for the teenage hordes screaming over Cameron.

 

Yes, it seems that the only people that enjoy this are people with no knowledge of medicine.

Which makes sense, I suppose.

This one I'm not sure if it's actually decent or I'm just really forgiving.

It's a Buffy crossover, post-season 7, where Cuddy gave up baby Buffy for adoption (she just finally found out Buffy is her long lost daughter), and now Buffy's pregnant (the daddy/fiance to Buffy is dead and not like Angel or Spike dead).

I always kind of enjoyed this one and then the gayness of pregnant!Buffy slapped me in the face. I thought I'd start hating it then, but surprisingly I haven't. And it's romance-less which is fantastic in my book. It's got one of the better portrayals of Dr. House (i.e. he's not some secret tortured softie in love with someone).

It's... sappy, and slightly emo, and more than a bit fangirlish. But I like it anyway, and I don't know why, even though I dumped it after some sort of plot fired up. Good for burning a few spare minutes, I suppose.

In other news, damn good House oneshots can be found here, even though one or two of them are slash. I read 'em all, personally, but that's more out of a sort of personal loyalty to the only writer ever to write decent Discworld fanfiction.

 

By pure coincidence I started reading this yesterday from your favourite story list nonjon. It din't seem to be amazing, but then again it wasn't bad and the portrayal of House was refreshing, unfortunately Buffy's written as "100 Valley-Girl cliches," with barely any serious attempt to give her any more character.

Unfortunately the fail then set in hard: First Buffy starts having to "cover up" the bruises and cuts she gets from slaying from House, Cameron, Wilson, etc. Despite managing to attend school on the hellmouth for 2 years and remain somewhat inconspicuous, she's in Princeton for 2 days before Cameron starts rabbiting on and on about how "she needs to get that cut looked at."

My vain hopes that the author was epic enough to have this lead into Buffy/Cameron (especially as it has already been made clear that its not going to end up as Buffy/House) were dashed when Buffy was discovered to be "carrying a parasite." Oh dear.

Nonjon, I always regarded your favourite stories list on ff.net as both epic and full of win, yet I can't help but feel that its reputation has been somewhat tarnished with this fairly "meh" fic. I demand MOAR fics that you like damn it!

The problem that I have with House fanfiction was already said. House's mentality and his demeanor are very counterproductive to romance. That's why Stacy got driven away and why Cameron got over her crush. She saw House for who he truly was, a miserable old man who didn't want to be saved.

And from what I know of fanfiction romance is the most popular category. Also especially with this many males on staff, slash is abundant. There are WAY too many m/m fics in the House fandom. Just like in the scrubs fandom. People, well 14 year old girls, want to see Dr Cox and JD get it on. Just like they want to see House and Forman, Chase and especially Wilson.

If there was a decent plot development I would rather see a House/Cuddy pairing just because out of all the possibilities this one wouldn't be ridiculously OOC. But it would have to be different then the same old tired "All that fighting between House and Cuddy was sexual tension." It doesn't work with Potter and sure as hell doesn't work with House.




@Logrus Your dad bitches about the "medical retardation" even though all of the diseases are taken from real medical cases. Sure they put in different storyline and/or characterization but the catalyst and the treatment are all the same. The producers said that their big concern in the first season and part of the second was that they would run out of stories...but they said that the cases kept coming in

 

Ever seen a nurse on the show? Exactly. Case closed. Doctors don't do there own tests, they just order them.

Ever see a goddamn surgeon? Exactly. Doctors don't do surgery (usually). Sure, let the old man with intense muscle pain and weakness in a leg do a highly dangerous operation that requires perfectly steady hands. Yeah. Great idea.

Oh and "Diagnostics" is a BS department.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking LOVE the show. Calling its representation of a hospital anything but complete bullshit is ridiculous, however.

 

I never said it was a representation of how a hospital was run, only that the patients are real, or rather their illnesses and cures are. And there's been a few surgeons on the show, not as consults but House has barged into surgery a few times when he needed to stop the meaningless surgery. Buy coughing and placing a bug on the table for instance.

 

This one was pretty good, you need to do a little WSD to match of the time periods, but enjoyable none-the-less.

I found it odd that doctors not specialised in anatomic pathology, bacteriology, virology, biochem, hematology etc. would do all the lab work themselves. Afaik Foreman's a neurologist, Chase an infectiologist (not the same thing as a bacteriologist) and Cameron an allergist. Same goes for imaging, normally radiologists take care of that.

On the other hand, doctors who aren't surgeons sometimes perform invasive exams -- but endoscopies are usually performed by gastroenterologists, angioplasty by radiologists and so on. Things might be different in the US though.

Last, we don't have "Diagnostic" departments, but the equivalent is called "médecine interne". Internal medicine.

Although those departments usually have more than one case a week...
