    Ron's main role in the series is to provide Harry with the emotional support (comfort, a sense of fun, a loving family, etc.) he needs to get through his adventure (even if he did have some brilliant ideas at times, like suggesting Harry to use Felix Felicis to procure Slughorn's memory), just like Hermione's main role is to provide Harry with the brilliant plans and ideas and knowledge. I do not think one role is more important than the other because a person needs both to get through life....
