Uh, I don't think Alan Rickman's performance as Snape led to Severitus. Like, at all.

Well, the movies sort of softened Snape's character, in the books he was depicted in all his bitter, petty and childish glory while Rickman was...well, it was easier to sympathize with him than the image I had from the books.

But Severitus probably dates from way back, the movies just made it more frequent.

    This.
Apart from that, I accidentally confounded Severitus and Snarry. My bad. However, Snape generally became much more popular and a favourite for thousands of fangirls because of Alan Rickman.
And while that could have been a positive thing - if you look at the crap done with Snape as main charachter, it wasn't.

Probably a dumb one, but why was McGonagall watching #4 Privet Drive in Chapter 1 of Philosopher's Stone?

She was waiting to meet Dumbledore when he dropped Harry off - and in the process was spying on the Dursleys.

    He was joking, I think.

Either that it he's mixing bad fanon and canon.

Does Harry manage to shield himself from Crabbe's fiendfyre in the books, or was that movie heresy?

In both the books and movies Harry does not block anything. He runs his ass off because that's all you can do in the face of fiend fire. Book canon says that the basic aquamenti spell evaporates when it come in contact with fiendfire however in the movie water apparently makes a path for Harry to escape.

I see... I had forgotten. However in the books that does not happen and as far as I know it's mostly unblock able for the average wizard except for Dumbledore and Voldemort. Hermione seemed to know what it was in the books. I would think that if she had come across a spell or other means of blocking it she would have.

How fast are spells in Harry Potter?

I mean they have to be pretty fast considering Wizards were hitting eachother diagonally and at reasonable distances in The Battle of 7 Potter's. There is also the fact Harry has never seen a spell coming directly towards him and moved out of the way.

I think the speed in the movies is appropriate - I'd say they are a bit slower than the Star Wars blaster plasma shots are.

In DH, after geting attacked by Death Eaters right after the wedding, Hermione does a memory charm on them. She says she hasn't done one before even though she memory chamd her parents?

Are there 2 different types of memory charms? Or did she just do a powerful Confundus or something on her parents?
