A Song of Ice and Fire stories
I know GRRM doesn't like fanfiction and I'm curious if theres any good stories out there. I've already read Featherbed and I'm in the process of reading The North Remembers. So, are there any recommendations?

I'm mostly into the AU situation fics and even though some people tend to follow canon a bit too closely because there's so much they can't try and think outside the box with (Kind of a shame, but it's the same with HP redo fics, so.), there's some fun timesinks. Featherbed's author wrote a Robb/Myrcella one that was also good (And you can find it via the author's page on AO3), but it's trumped by a similar concepted Acts of Treason, which if you get past the initial shippy stuff has some pretty neat ideas, though it's a bit jumpy as it tends to summarise an entire series in 200k words. But still, good timesink. A recent one with a decent update rate is Ned Stark Lives, which is exactly what you'd expect. While it's a bit easygoing at the moment and suffers from a lot of weird POV ideas, there's lots of words to read, the story isn't jumping around too much (A problem with North Remembers), and it might yet explode into awesomeness.
Couple of others, let's see... I know Ashaya swears up and down on this prequel fic set in the days of Robert's Rebellion, and there's also this AU one where Robb doesn't fuck up (One of many, but I kinda liked this one despite the weird vibes of later chapters from Sansa; but hey, it's better than Sansa/Sandor option!). Umm, yeah, not sure what else to link. There's a long list of pretty neat oneshots, but they're mostly pairing centred and if you want your pairing specifically, just go hunting through the tags on AO3 and the filter on FFN and you'll find a thousand. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but you've pretty much read the best ones already, sad as it seems.

Thanks for those, I've been absorbing everything I could ASoIaF recently since I finished the 5th book and the Tales of Dunk & Egg about a week ago. Including the speculations on /r/asoiaf which is driving me crazy.

I decided to give the fandom a try, never read the books either, and I like it quite a lot. So far I've read through all of the stories Matt mentioned except for the prequel one, just don't like it, and I'm currently about a third of the way through chapter 7 of 'No Featherbed For Me'. I cried a bit at one point.
Anyone know some stories worth mentioning, possibly with Jon Snow as the main char? |

Sorry for the double post. :P
I finished what was left of 'No Featherbead For Me' and quite a few other little oneshots. Currently I'm reading 'The North Remembers' and find myself hesitant to continue reading with each chapter ... mainly due to the warnings mentioned. Graphic Depictions Of Violence Rape/Non-Con Major Character Death I hope otherwise but does it go into graphic detail about the rape scenes? I ask because I don't particularly like reading about such things, which may or may not seem odd considering the canon story and me being a member here. |

There's one scene that cuts it a bit close, and it's a bit ugh, but I don't think it's fantastically graphically detailed and it's not thought on enough to make you wince every other chapter. It's about the same level as ASOIAF itself. Not to say there isn't some disturbing shit when we get a Ramsay Bolton POV, but yeah...

Finished Acts of Treason last night and I didn't like it that much. I felt that it was moving too fast and that the author told us what was happening rather than showing.

I agree about Acts of Treason; it started off really well but felt rushed and empty towards the end (I stopped reading a few chapters ago).
It might do better if I read it again in a year or so without a wait between updates though.

I finished Acts of Treason as well and it was okay, but Myrcella isn't one of characters I look forward to reading about.
So far I've made it to Chapter 32 in The North Remembers and the fact that there are so few Jon Snow chapters is kinda sad. Otherwise it's a pretty good read imo. |

Well, finally finished The North Remembers and as you said the rape scene was indeed 'ugh'. Any of you know where I could find some more stories besides AO3 and FFN?

Finished Ned Stark Lives and the one where Robb doesn't lose. Ned Stark Lives has to be my favorite one so far it feels better written than the Robb story and Acts of Treason. Yeah, the Robb story was meh. Sansa is crazy near the end. Gonna start Robert's Rebellion tomorrow.

Given this most recent chapter of Ned Stark Lives, and the two that preceded it, I am very much looking forward to the AU situation that's gonna play out. The story also feels refreshingly focused, getting the PoVs into place to serve the story as its cohesive whole, rather than going all over the place. Also, a while back I outlined an AU series of ideas after Ned lived, and I like that a few of them got nailed on the head here. Great minds and all, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing where this guy goes.

Somewhat related to Fanfiction something that's going on reddit, they decided to have a tournament. The rules and brackets.
Currently going on: Jaime vs. Bronze Yohn Royce Grey Worm vs Victarion The Mountain vs Jorah Mormont Greatjon Umber vs Mance Haven't really read any of them yet to see if the quality is good or not, but it seems like an interesting idea. |

While looking for ASOIF fics to read on FFN I realized that Ned Stark Lives had been updated, but for some reason you can not open the latest chapter (25) through the drop down menu so here's a direct link. Anyone got any idea why this happens?
Also, I am looking for fics with Jon Snow as the protagonist. I don't care for pairings or romance, I just wanna see Jon being the bad-ass he is destined to be.

Also, almost all the stories on FFN are self-inserts paired with Robb/Jon/Jaime >_>. And then there are fics like this, lolwut?

I recently found decent (meaning readable) HP/GoT crossover - Harry Stark of the Red Winter. Nothing amazing, but can be read if someone has too much time on their hands.

On that note though, are there any stories dealing with the Blackfyre rebellion and the Great Bastards? I figure that they are far enough removed from the story line that the fact that most authors fail at GRRM level political intrigue shouldn't matter too much. Either that or one where Jon is raised as a Targarien in exile, rather than with Ned. |
