Welcome to the Second Annual DLP FanFiction Awards of 2007!

    History:
Every year DarkLordPotter.Net holds a series of awards to go out to the Harry Potter fanfiction community. We consider these awards to be rather prestigious, as we are fanatical about quality stories, and only the best will be nominated and voted on. We have a number of categories.

    This Year:
We will be holding the 2007 FanFiction awards in the month of January, with the nominations starting January 8th and ending January 24th. Voting will then begin on January 25th, and close on January 30th. Results will be announced January 31st.

You will only be able to nominate one story for each category. Once voting begins, you will rank your top three stories from each category. Your first choice will be worth 3 points, second choice 2, and third choice 1. Nominations will be in a separate forum open on January the 8th. Do not post them here.

This year our categories are somewhat different, having a number of choice awards from both the stories themselves as well as characters. It combines the best of both last year's story categories, as well as categories discussed in June of 2006.

    This year's categories:

    Story Awards

    Story of the Year 2006
    [IMG]
The grand-daddy of them all and the most prestigious award that is given to the author with the best Fanfiction Story in the Harry Potter Fanfiction Universe.

    Best Noir Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
Noir stories incorporate cynical attitudes and bleak outlooks, may be sick and perverse or evil in nature and generally have a dark atmosphere. This award is given to the author who does Noir best.

Categories this Award replaces: Sick and Perverse, Evil and Azkaban

    Best Alternate Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
Alternate Fanfiction stories are the odd ones out. They may include time travel, just straight alternate universe activity where canon facts are changed to progress the story, or even the stories with the "alternate heritage". This award is given to the author who does alternate best.

Categories this Award replaces: Time travel, and Alternate Universe

    Best Newcomer Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
Only newbie authors apply for this award. This award looks to congratulate new authors on joining the fandom and praising their new works. The best newcomer story will be the first work of an author and must be created in the year before the award ceremony takes place. (e.g. Jan 2006 - Dec 2006)

    Best One-Shot Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
To move an audience in one chapter is a skill few can accomplish. This award seeks to praise those authors who undertake the task of creating a setting, time and place with characters and emotions that draw the reader and take them full-circle. Stories with one chapter may apply.

    Best Romance Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
Decent romance stories are hard to come by. The ones you do find are engaging and passionate. This is what this award celebrates. It celebrates well written romance, not merely convenient relationships or poorly written ones.

    Best Crossover Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
Not merely an alternate, crossovers take a category of their own. It embodies the art that is mixing and matching fandoms in such a way as to paint a realistic picture of the two coexisting and mixing.

    Best Comedy Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
Almost self-explanatory, this award highlights stories that involve copious amounts of humor. Stories nominated here bring more than a few chuckles.

    Best Innovative Fanfiction Story
    [IMG]
Today, many stories follow similar themes. Many of these themes have developed into well-worn cliches. This award, however, looks for those stories which are new. Stories with ideas and themes unique to themselves, not following the general ideas. Innovation keeps fanfiction alive, and should be well rewarded.

    Character Awards

    Best Hero
    [IMG]
Awarded to the author with the best protagonist character that exemplifies what is commonly found in heroes - courage, valor (aka light-sided spirit) - in a Fanfiction Story.

    Best Villain
    [IMG]
Awarded to the author with the best antagonist character that exemplifies what is commonly found in villains - hatred, deception (aka dark-sided spirit) - in a Fanfiction Story.

    Best Anti-Hero
    [IMG]
Awarded to the author with the best protagonist that exemplifies what is commonly found in anti-heroes - lack of foolish bravery and usage of dirty tricks that would usually be shunned (aka dark, yet light-sided).

    Best Original Character
    [IMG]
Awarded to the author with the best original character (created character) that exemplifies what is commonly found in a good character - many dimensions, emotions and a unique persona that stands out and is not all powerful ala Mary-Sue.

Thanks to BioPlague for the images, as well as the rest of the community including BioPlague for contributing this year's categories.

Is that a purely OC catagory or can it also be for fleshed out characters? Like Blaise and other charecters that are just given a passing mention in canon but are fleshed out in the fic? I just think that people who do a damn fine job of giving these charecters a personality should be able to be nominated since they created a whole character apart from the name more or less.

Exactly what I was thinking. I checked the HP Lexicon and they don't even have a physical description of characters like Daphne Greengrass, Lisa Turpin or Su Li. Why can't they be considered OC?

But, as always, the mighty moderators will decide (and their decision will, as always, be correct:p )

Super-yay for the awards again. They're what drew me to DLP in the first place.

I'm guessing Taure either missed this line: "Nominations will be in a separate forum open on January the 8th. Do not post them here." Or maybe Raven just amended his post to add that line later.

And there's a vast difference between an OC and fleshing out a lesser known character. Primarily in that lesser known characters are named by JKR, canon, and every fanfiction author in the world can use them to their heart's content. OC on the other hand are the complete creation of an author and extremely rarely will they ever appear in anyone else's fanfiction. It's much easier to garner reader and fan interest in a "Harry/Daphne Greengrass" romance rather than say a "Harry/Kari Boslav" romance for example.

Of course, if OC is meant to cover lesser-known ones fleshed out, that's cool too. But it should be amended to clearly include them.

When I originally wrote out the four character awards and when DLP IRC discussed them, the intention was 100% original character. It comes down to what nonjon hit upon: it's very hard to create a new character with a new name, characteristics and attributes and for the author to make certain the character isn't too strong, too weak, overbearing or anything else with negative connotation that can tank a story. On top of all that, you have to compete with a Daphne Greengrass, Su Li or Blaise Zabini?

Those characters automatically stir something within a potential reader; a true OC will not.

Of course, this is all moot; the final decision is out of my hands. The aforementioned was my take on it, however.

For the stories that are nominated, must they be finished stories, or can they be 'in-progress?'

Does Su Li qualify as an OC? She's not in any of the books. She's kind of a hypothetical character.

Canon characters are not OC. Only 100% OC.

There is no minimum, but it'd be preferred to be updated some time in 2006. Short stories are not likely to do well though.

Lord Ravenclaw, I saw that you said updated in 2006, does that mean that the story can have been started at any time, just so long as it has a chapter from 2006?

Su Li isn't in canon. I got this from wikipedia, and have seen a few sites that agree with this:

It's still a failure to create your own character 100%; those names are J.K. Rowling's - while Seamus's background isn't canon, it'd be gay for someone to use his background and call it his own since it's "not canon." It's just a name but a name that is used in multiple stories and is not original in any sense of the word.

In that thing you call a closet. Better watch out,
Do the stories have to be hosted at Fanfiction.net, or is it allowable for the story to be at Schnoogle? That is the only place the story is hosted, by the way.
