I was always very interested in how the "first war" went - what Voldemort did to make himself so feared, whether he actually went out in public, how experienced wizards reacted to it, and all kinds of personal tragedies that occurred.

There aren't many of those stories that I'm aware of. Delenda Est is both a good example and a bad one - good because it presents the zeitgeist, bad because the worldbuilding sucked and was inconsistent with canon. Professor Riddle and the Quest for Tenure is better detailed and has pretty great worldbuilding, though it's an AU.
