There's this really interesting SI. It's a solid 3.5/5. Grammar starts horrible, but after a while it jumps to tolerable. The SB link is 40 or so chapters behind the AH one, but AH is for registered users only so if you don't want to bother. It's pretty good for a SI. He isn't Mary Sueish, no attempts at uplifting, author understands basic feudal politics pretty well and is good at Characterization.

This is a pretty decent fic. I'm not sure how it will hold up on its own merit, but the fact that it updates daily keeps me invested.

In addition to that, I fucking hate it when supposedly grown up people pretend to be so ignorant of other's affections and such. I could understand if he was some 15 year old kid, writing this SI as wish fulfillment (which it kind of is, but then again, the same could be said for every SI fanfic, including my own), but according to him he was in his 30s when he was moved into the world of ASOIAF and yet he keeps acting out this perpetual blindness to how some of the people around him feel, most notably the female characters.

As for the Mary Sueish bit, I disagree. The SI not only gets to be a Targaryen, but a Targaryen with a dragon, a Targaryen

who apparently can make pacts with old gods of Valyria, gets to become all but immortal, learns how to make Valyrian blades and more besides (seriously, having not one Valyrian beauty as his wife-to-be, but having Rhaenyra, who used to be quite beautiful before she got fat, as his lover too; how the fuck does this not reek of blatant wish fulfillment masqueraded with the character's obliviousness on how they both feel about him).

I mean, it's not the typical, canal-building, political powerhouse in the making that you see in most ASOIAF fics, but even when things go wrong for him, they end up with better results than you expect to see from all his worries and rambling.

Also, the SI is blatant in his bias against some characters, undeservedly so.

To make this matter clear: Criston Cole did literally nothing wrong.

 

Yeah, but he wasn't born again into a preexisting role. And he just starts hating on Cole from day 1, without even getting to know the guy. When in fact, given that he has all that foreknowledge, he should be hating more on Rhaenyra who was better known as Maegor-with-teats.

 

Rhaenyra is family and not a monster like Daemon and Aemond. Cole isn't. And she is kind of important if he wants to stop the Dance. Witness he puts effort to get together with both Aegon and Rhaenyra. Cole is more secondary character like Aemond(until he demonstrated he isn't the monster he was in OTL) to really push him to get to know him and get over his bias. Witness his situation with Daemon.

 

Maybe he should, but likes and dislikes can be rather random when it comes to fictional characters. Since the main character has no willingness to learn more about Cole and there were no situations that forced it, he's stuck with this bias.

I would deeply recommend this for those who have AH access. It's a bit slow but the writing for the most part is very well done. SI drops into Rhaegar Targaryen about 3 years before Duskendale, though we're introduced only a year or so before Duskendale with ripple effects all around. Probably worth an AH account, if you don't have one.

 

Until that tourney where he asked Alicent for her favor, i.e. the greens, he was pretty much Rhaenyra's man. It doesn't make sense that the SI didn't want to make good with someone who so obviously supported someone that he as a SI gave a damn about. Instead of buddying up with the guy, making sure things went along as best they could, he just wishes death on him from the very beginning, never bothering to team up with the guy and steer Rhaenyra towards a better path. Then again, that would have gotten in the way of what happens later on, so who knows, maybe he planned it that way from the very start.

Been mentioned already, and somewhat recently, and I heartily endorse the recommendation yet again. I mean, it's a SI fic about Rhaegar Targaryen that I don't hate on or bash, which was quite a surprise for me, given how people tend to fuck these things up. Plus, the sequel just got an update too. Bit of a slow burner, but I don't mind waiting so long as there's no dip in quality.
