Unless I missed it somehow, there isn't thread for 2018.

Ready Player One - SDCC Teaser.

The book is stuck on my list to read one day and, to be honest, this recent 80-ties trend isn't exactly winning me over, but this is one well done teaser. The music especially. Who would expect that Willy Wonka's Pure Imagination can be redone in such an epic manner? And Rush is a nice choice for the rest of it.

We finally have a trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider movie.

I love everything about it. Alicia Vikander is one of my favorite actresses and I love the Tomb Raider games. Gonna watch the shit out of this movie.

It does look pretty solid, certainly a lot better than I'd expected. Maybe not a must see, but I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

I'll watch Tomb Raider just for Alicia in Lara-shorts. I'm a shallow man.

Also Black Panther. He was awesome in Civil War.

This is a perfectly good reason. If you want more of her, watch Ex_Machina, it's my most favorite movie.

Seen it. Was okay, didn't blow me away or anything and the whole"robots are people too" theme wasn't strong enough to make me go wow, it's an old trope. I guess I prefer my scifi more like SW or Matrix.

So fantasy, versus actual sci-fi? :3

Anyone have thoughts on this? I actually enjoyed the first one, and I'm not sure how I am going to feel about this one.

I read the book this summer. It was actually kind of bad. Or rather, it was just not very good. It reminded me of a lot of HP fanfiction that I read and thought was good when I was first getting into the game but that would be terrible to go back and try an read now. I'm talking flat antagonist, poorly written romance, silly items purchased on the mid-summer diagon/knockturn alley shopping trip, mandatory physical training montage, etc. Maybe the book would have resonated more if I had some emotional atatchment to every single 80's pop culture reference that he makes? I don't know, it wasn't a bad concept really, it just could have been executed a lot better. Regardless, I have hope that they do the normal book-movie adaptation thing and change a whole bunch of stuff except this time it would actually be a good thing.

I watched the Tomb Raider trailer again and by gods, the green screen stunts look fake as shit, especially that gigantic leap off of the falling plane wing with her hands bound.

RPOne is the worst combination of bad protagonist wank fiction and "look at these references aren't I clever."

I'm pretty positive atm. The first one was ridiculously entertaining, and there's no real reason the second shouldn't be either. I haven't seen a GDT film that I haven't enjoyed at least a little, and there's always the possibility that a sequel might have a stronger plot to go with the action.

Of course, it could turn into a pointless, bloated mess...but there's no reason to think it would beyond ew, sequels.

Only thing about the trailer was that it was super CG, like it didn't have the grimey, semi-real aspect of the first. I hope that they don't go overboard and take away what made me like the CG style of the last one.

    For sure. Not great editing.

I was hoping they would aim for something a little grittier as well, more akin to the new TR games. This seems more light-hearted action flick.

I was born in 1972, so I do have quite a bit of fond memories of the 80s (well, until I started drinking at least :D), and it really doesn't help much.

I really wanted to like it - a lot of my older friends loved it for nostalgia purposes, and to be fair there were some cool references that I didn't expect - but overall it was just kind of a mess. It felt like the author was trying to write a book to express what being on the high-functioning end of ASD (or extreme ADHD) is like or something.

    The Current War:

Has a few actors I've enjoyed and I'm fairly excited by the addition of Tesla. It'll be morbidly entertaining if they gloss over what Edison did to Nikola. Good enough for me to keep an eye on at least.

Holding out hopes that this doesn't suck, and atleast lives up to the first one.

It needs 3 things to be good.

Giant robots. Giant monsters. Giant robots punching giant monsters. The bar really isn't high. They just need to satisfy my inner 9 year old.

Yeah Scott gets it. You don't go into Pacific Rim-style films expecting story writing on par with, say, Shawshank Redemption. You go in because the only thing that can stop those kaiju alien bastards is a goddamn giant robot!

My only complain about new Pacific Rim is that the robots and monsters doesn't feel as massive as they did in the original.
