Hmm. I'm not sure how much of the success of Game of Thrones can be laid at their feet vs. the quality of the source material. Obviously they did good work in terms of adaptation, but some would argue that the show deteriorated in quality (or at the very least, complexity/subtlety) significantly after they left the books behind. So I'm not sure if they have an instant "magic touch" in terms of guaranteeing good quality, especially outside the HBO umbrella. But hopefully they'll do well - especially as I imagine they will be given a healthy budget.

Well no one, besides the insane, would call Star Wars a narratively complicated story. So it's more of a question how the later seasons compare to other shows.

Also fan service. Can't say they didn't give fans what they wanted and Star Wars is all about that.

Have the feeling a Star Wars from those guys will be, in terms of quality, somewhere between the Holiday Special and The Phantom Menace. Only with more needless rape.

Obviously, can be wrong, but don't have much confidence in their writing. As Taure said, the quality of the show drastically fell after they had no more books to cling to and it was probably the biggest decline in quality I have ever seen in a show after the Misfits.

Another trilogy beside the already announced trilogy that is totally separate from the latest trilogy that is the ending of the trilogy of trilogies?

So is this Marvel Cinematic Universe Star Wars Cinimatic Universe - Phase IV...V...VI?

Disney: If it's worth doing, it's worth doing the shit out of!

To be honest, I'm definitely getting Star Wars fatigue, and I know that among my Star Wars-loving friends, I am far from the only one.

If you had told me that five years ago, I'd have said you were crazy.

Even if it was a bad SW movie, I still liked it. Maybe because of the long wait between trilogies. If they're doing this then it can't be with bad scripts and really bad science anymore. Not if they want it to survive for years on end like the MCU. They'll actually have to work on it. That's the hope I hold for these next two trilogies... and Kenobi. Solo... eh.

The thing that I don't like are the books. I haven't read one yet that I really liked. They were all meh.

D&D are amazing showrunners. Their quality for cast picking, everything related to produce from scenario to lightning and directors, getting the money and the freedom for doing such things, can all be laid up to their feet up to a certain level. BUT, everytime and everything that they did an original turn/run on, it turned to shit. Everything regarding the story direction took a notable drop in quality and started making less and less sense. So, if they have good material to follow on, it can be great, if not, the art part is going to be great?

You’d have to try pretty hard to make anything with Revan in it not worth watching.

They managed to make ASOIAF not worth watching, so I wouldn't count them out.

I think that'd go away if they ever cared to make a movie that was actually good. Star Wars Ep. 7 was a blatant and horrifyingly executed ripoff, Rogue One was ok, but had bland characters, and Ep. 8 is a complete and utter mess in terms of storytelling and clunkily conveyed agenda.

Rian Johnson subverted your expectations though. Whether or not it was visually, narratively or emotionally satisfying, he just subverted the shit right out of them.

Yes, he did. But subverting expectations is easy. You just need to know what people expect and then do something else.

For example: People by now know Kylo Ren to be a powerful force user that has fallen to the dark side, and they expect him to still be that way at the beginning of Ep. IX
You could subvert these expectations by instead portraying him as a hippie that endlessly preaches about how important it is to save animals - and do that from the beginning of Ep. VII onwards.

Is that any good? No. Is it something that can be counted as an accomplishment? No. Is it a subversion? Yes.
Good subversions are difficult, and Rian failed miserably at doing good subversions.

The only thing you can say in favor of Rian in terms of his subversions is that he actually dared to put something that unsatisfying in the film. And I'm not sure whether that's something you could argue to be in his favor.

Should I have put an /s after my last post? I thought it was pretty heavily implied but these things don't always translate very well to text.

I'm already feeling Star Wars overload.

Conversely, I think you'd have to try hard to make something about Revan good at this point. People seem to have really dumb ideas about him, and TOR certainly fucked him up.
