    I'm touched.

In all seriousness, though, I think they're very competent writers and producers, and if they get good direction from the Star Wars story group, I think they can do well. I think they need to start branching the Star Wars universe away from the Skywalker stories, and if they did an Old Republic series, that would be fertile ground for good storytelling.

Well, it can't be worse than The Last Jedi or the Prequels, so I'm optimistic.

It can always be as bad as Rogue One. That sort of bland studio shlock should be what's expected of Star Wars.

Rogue One had some flaws, but it was a pretty good movie. Better than TLJ.

The Last Jedi and the prequels were definitely weaker than the other Star Wars movies.

I thought Rogue One was pretty good. Yes, the movie had its flaws, but to say it was straight up bad isn't fair.

    ???

It was terrible. Nothing in it made sense. The plot barely followed a logical progression. All the characters were paper thin and felt like they had precisely one descriptor given in the script, and the director made sure that actors followed that descriptors at all times.

Than there is the inherent problem that the whole damn thing is meaningless in the long run. At least the Solo movie has the origin story thing going for it. Rogue One had a bunch of nobodies, that the movie didn't even attempt to flesh out, doing something that was successfully hand waved away by a single throwaway line.

It didn't add anything to the Star Wars canon and it utterly failed as a movie in it's own right.

We disagree entirely, then. I found Rogue One much more enjoyable than TLJ, which was basically a really slow car chase. I liked the fleshing out of the Kylo and Rey, but much of the rest of it was meh.

Man, I love this board sometimes, it's like one person gets irritated about something, and then it's basically a one-upping competition to see who can be angriest.

    Yeah, it's beautiful isn't it?

Anyways, I somehow managed to post a reply with only half of what I actually wrote, I'm absolute trash at using a phone to write.

Let me see if I can remember what I fucking wrote and I'll get back.

Rogue One is a thoroughly unecessary, unoriginal and boring mediocre movie. LJ, however, is an awful Star Wars movie all around.

Say what you will about their minds for story direction, you can't shit on B&W's quality as producers and directors.

Given a good script, I expect they will execute it extremely well.

The new trilogy is unnecessary. It basically says "all that effort that went into defeating the Empire--all that was for nothing".

About the only thing TLJ did better than Rogue One was spawn better memes, but that doesn't help the movie be less meh. I will admit that the 10 seconds of silence after the hyperspace lance is one of my favorite movie moments of 2017, but pretty much everything else about it was ugh. Kylo had a fucking awesome introduction in TFA, but JJ managed to squander that potential within the same movie. Then Rian came in, bent on subverting shit.

That's not what unnecessary means. Rogue One was unnecessary because it added nothing to the already established story. Literally nothing. Nothing in SW changed because of that, because things that happened after it stayed the same. The sequels are stupid, yes, but they're adding things. Stupid annoying things. But they're making new stories, adding changes. Sure. What happened before the sequels didn't change, but what happens after will be completely changed because it will have to fit them.

But why does it have to change? It gave us backstory about the rebellion and how they acquired the Death Star plans. It didn't need to move the main story line, that wasn't the purpose of the movie. It seems that the direction that Disney is going with the "[Insert name] A Star Wars story" movies is simply to add more backstory to the whole universe and as long as they are good I'm alright with that.

On the other hand, TLJ may have added to the story, but it was just a mess. With a bunch of unnecessary sequences, like the whole Finn and Rose going to the casino planet thing. IMO that's worse than a movie that doesn't change the main story but is actually enjoyable.

It didn't change anything. No one there mattered. No important before or after will be seen in a new light. If people cut it off from Canon, literally nothing important would be lost. That's what makes it unnecessary.

So what... every prequel ever made is stupid and a waste of time?

When did we stop enjoying movies simply because they are fun? Why does everything have to be connected for you to enjoy it?

Would the movie have been better off with some bullshit connection to any of the trilogies?

Wait, so no prequel shed a new light, changed somebody's intepretation of further events or other characters, no prequel ever made an important addition to the work that it was a prequel to? Really? Because thats what I said, for it to be unnecessary, and since you're claiming like that... (tip: thats bullshit. Godfather II Vito's story is a well made prequel that added a lot on a very iconic character, explained somethings and made the loss of some characters more pugnant/be seen in a new light).

Because they wanted to have a connection to the trilogies? You can ascertain that from the very hard to realize fact because in the case of (i) the prequels, that they reused the main characters, keep referencing and keep redoing (and SUBVERTING) and among other desperate measures and (ii) in case of Rogue One, they TRIED TO EXPLAIN THE MCGUFFIN OF THE FIRST MOVIE, used the first and most iconic villain of the original trilogy and used the Rebel Alliance to draw easy sympathy for their main characters.

I fully agree the movie was bland and not really well developed but it was still miles above the other 2 Disney SW movies which I consider abominations. A forgettable side kick movie which didn't annoy me but with no rewatch qualities. On IMDB I would give RogueOne a 5-6.
