I don't think anyone would argue you can't be a hypocritical dickbag and also a feminist. Whedon always pushed the envelope with these things, it was a massive controversy at the time when he made Willow a lesbian for example. I wouldn't say he's got more radical, more that his views have evolved like everyone else, he was just always on the edge of that curve.

Of the people that I've talked to who were also fans of Buffy, not a single one was keen on a reboot/retelling, while damn near everyone was perfectly happy to see tales of a new Slayer set in the same universe.

Buffy was great and terrible and exactly what it needed to be for the time.

Go on to tell the story of a new Slayer. Give a new generation their own "_______ the Vampire Slayer" to fall in love with.

Leave Buffy, The Scoobies, Spike, Angel, and everyone else alone.

Those who shout the loudest, and all that.

Which about sums up my issue with the SJW movement: it's not actually about actually holding a set of beliefs, it's about loudly proclaiming them for social gain and attacking those who don't conform. Basically the millenial version of Baptist Christianity.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I like the original Buffy, though probably slightly less than most. The first season is going to have to be really strong though, because the original first season was super weak, and this has a lot to live up to. A lot of old shows seemed to start off weak, now that I think about it, and built up in later seasons.

Ha xD, this is going to be a disaster. The fact that they aren’t bothering to come up with new ideas or new characters and are just color swapping existing ones to “not white” has tumblr style progressivism written all over it. All we need to do now is grab some popcorn and wait for the “you only don’t like this because you’re a racist” fireworks to start popping off.

Got tricked into watching Buffy when I was a kid by my cousin who said it was a prequel to the Scooby Doo movie. The fact that they were called "Scoobies" and that Sarah Michelle Geller was the protagonist didn't help. I was waiting for the day where they would reveal Xander to be Shaggy and for Willow to start wearing glasses.

Ended up really liking it though it hasn't really aged all that well but it is still watchable and enjoyable.

What really gets me about the reboot is that it just wipes out so much history and, I dunno, just renders Buffy's tenure moot.

Hopefully, it won't be as bad as the Charmed reboot looks.

If Whedon actually takes the reins I have high hopes for this even though my initial reaction is OMGWTFNO. But just because he's listed as executive producer doesn't mean he's going to be hands on. I.e. is Whedon actually doing this or just putting his name on it?

That said I don't really feel that Buffy needs a reboot. Despite it's age the stories it tells are still relevant. I think it's aged incredibly well, personally. Just as engaging now as it was the first time I saw it (which, granted, was right after the series finished).

And the first three seasons of Buffy were my favorite, dunno what y'all on about talking smack. ;)

As for the SJW concerns I'll wait and see. I hope that the characters aren't getting up on soapboxes like the concern in this thread shows, but Whedon has proven himself a good story-teller in the past. I'll hope he's professional enough to keep that as the focus and not let any SJW tendencies intrude overmuch.

You’ve got more faith than I do Joss “Womb Envy” Whedon.

I've never followed the man on social media, or heard/seen him talk about his thoughts, so it's quite possible he's further gone than I realize.

But Buffy was good, and Avengers was good, and Firefly was good. The start of Agents of SHIELD (where he had a hand) was good but went downhill when he stepped back from it (in my personal opinion).

I don't like the idea of rebooting Buffy, since it will be nearly impossible to recapture what made it work, but I'll give it a try with an open mind if he's behind the wheel. But all he gets is a chance. Not gonna bandwagon with him if he drops the ball.

Even if this one ends up as a bust. I’m hopeful Whedon will use the prominence Avengers gave him to actually make a series he wanted to do without it getting cancelled on him. Since he’s a big enough name now.

Everything I've read on this, which is considerable, focuses mainly on one thing and one thing only: Buffy will be black. That's it. Like that is it's only selling point.

Joss will be EP'ing the show, with a lot of the original show producers, directors, writers, etc. Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of SHIELD, Fringe, Lost, Alias, Midnight, Texes, and others) is the show runner, much like Marti Noxon and David Green-something was in the original run. She'll make all the decisions unless she really screws up and Joss has to replace her.

Things noted to look forward to:
A much more cultural diverse cast.

Yep, that's it. Granted, it's in the very early stage of development at the moment, but that's an awful selling point. They are looking to sell the series to cable and/or a streaming service, so it most likely won't even be on network TV. There goes the CW worries.

I mean when they made Hermione black it changed my entire world view. Maybe this is the change we need.

Yeah, with a lot of shows the first season includes a lot of figuring out the details on the fly, changing elements that sounded good when you were planning it out only to fall apart when it actually shows up on the screen, cast members leaving early, and characters who'd get a lot more development in later seasons not having any of the traits they're later known for.

He’s....it’s honestly hard to place precisely. He propagates some theories that are the equivalent of what were considered nonsense years and years ago such as what I previously mentioned “Womb Envy.” It’s essentially the reverse of Freud’s penis envy idea in which Whedon suggests that one of the primary reasons for misogyny in the world is that we’re all secretly jealous of women for having wombs and the ability to bear children. He spouts this kind of bullshit constantly but then he spins around and fires Charisma Carpenter for getting pregnant.

I’m not decrying Buffy or Firefly by any stretch, Firefly was and still is one of my all time favorite shows but do I trust Whedon to handle literally anything regarding these kind of things? Absolutely not and Heathers post that a “culturally diverse cast” is a selling point kinda tells me everything I need to know.

i don't know how good it will be but i will give it a shot, it may be a bust but i may be wrong and it might be good. i dont know why they have to reboot it but it might work, if it covers the years between when Buffy last aired.

They could of did a show about Spike to be honest. I know its too late now but he was such a great character and James Marsters did an amazing job. I can't see anyone playing Spike and pulling it off like he did. I know he said he would of liked to do it years ago but not no 15-20 years later.

But I'm a big fan of btvs so I'll check the reboot out when it finally airs. So is Buffy going to be black? I don't mind honestly but they better pick a damn good one, black or white she has to have a 'Buffy look/vibe to her. Zendaya I think would make a good Buffy (not going to happen though).

Hmm... it's better news if they find some way to wind back the season 7 finale without cheapening it. Otherwise you're stuck with the power creep that plagued the later seasons of Buffy, which does not suit the beginning of a story at all. I think almost all fans agree that "prime Buffy" was seasons 2-3... that's the tone they should be trying to capture, not clashes between armies of disposable slayers and godlike villains.

And here's hoping they completely ignore the comic book stuff. No thank you to laser guns.
