ttyl. The bane of literary works.

Today in RIF fair I saw this book entitled ttyl. I figured the Internet acronym was simply a clever euphemism for a much more deep and meaningful book. On the back it promised highschool drama, and teenage problems, already a detractor to the book, but still not the proverbial axe as it were. I was not truly annoyed until I paged through the “novel” (if you can call it that) and found quite an unwelcome surprise.

The book was written in IM form, much like those IM fics we all know and hate. I should have known when the book introduced the characters as "SnowAngel," "zoegirl," and "mad maddie" on the back cover. Not only this, but was written with but a modicum of grammar. Gee whiz, what a celebrated author! Not only do you fail to introduce any real sentence structure in the story, but you cannot spell “you” either, using Internet speak for your characters. The real kicker is the fake 1998-era Mac OS style IM window borders around each and every page. I felt like burning the book on the spot, and it was by only my superior self control that I chose a Jack London story rather than this for destruction.

If I were submitting this for DLP review, it would rank higher than a Kinsfire on the alert scale. It is the Anti-Myth. At least Kinsfire's stories are written in standard literary form and have a basic plot.

    ttyl at Amazon

And for the best review of this book at Amazon, and the source of the name for this thread:

I literally started laughing out loud when I read that guy's review on Amazon.

I'm really amazed and shocked that a book like this was published by anyone.

99 of 145 people found Brian Bannon's review helpful. I'm happy that more than half thought so, but it does nothing to sooth my disgust for this book, author and publisher.

    I mean, c'mon!?

What in the hell is this? When I first looked, I thought maybe only a few parts were written in 'netspeak', the parts which showed what they may have been typing on the computer. But the whole book? I felt like stabbing myself in the eye with a pencil, something Raven suggested he was close to doing himself.

The title of this thread and of Brian Bannon's review tells the whole story. I can't believe someone would publish this piece of trash and people in todays society actually thinking it's a good read... where the hell are these people from? Jesus.

Quite frankly, this scares me a little. Are we going to see more books like this in the future? Are we going to see authors with little skill, Kinsfire for example, having their work published and stored in our libraries, sold in our bookstores and handed out to our children by teachers for a book report? And people wonder why we have so many retards in this world.

I give this book R for Retarded, to quote Ten.

    Wow...just...wow.

I'm a pretty optimistic person overall, even though I have my cynical moments.
Every now and again, I'll see something that makes me question my faith in humanity.
Usually, I'll soon see something else that will go some way to restoring said faith.

    After looking at this?

I'm not quite sure if there's *anything* that can balance out this loss of faith. The advent of text speak was one thing, that a book written entirely in it becomes popular is quite another.

I mourn the loss of one of the last bastions of sensibility and intelligence left in this world.

This author really makes a case for legalising abortion.
Or better yet, the idea posted in the Darwin awards: upon reaching adulthood everyone is given a test. Simply put them in a room with a gun. If they look down the barrel, the gun fires. Problem solved.

Stunning. The publishers must have been pissed, or perhaps they did it as a joke. That is the only way I can believe anyone would want to publish this... "horse shit"? (I can't help but feel that is still a compliment)

I motion to start a new cult to rid the world of abominations such as this.

I don't like to repeat others, but the idea that a book like that exists, and it appears there are more like it, by the same author, is truly horrifying.

I want to ask though, Raven, are you M. Rose?
I saw that and it just struck me, because of how similar it is to your comments on the book.

When I take over the world I'm going to see to it the several books like this a published. I'll let people enjoy them for about a year, and then at the end of said year I shall round up everyone who likes them and kill them all. This will undoubtably make the world a better place.

It was just a little curiosity on my part, I would have found it interesting if you hadn't been M. Rose.

I consider myself an optimistic person on the whole, I've always held the belief that Humanity was not yet beyond saving...

I have been Disallusioned to the point of mental trama. My only hope now is for some good old-fasioned Wrath of god shit. Lightning from the sky, morons being struck down by pillars of flame, Fire and Brimstone raining from the heavens... the whole works.

Thanks Lauren Myracle, You have offically killed the last of my optimism.

Maybe we'll all be saved by some Epic Author coming along to write a LotR-esque novel that simultaneously enlightens the minds of a thousand generations and overloads the "brains" of the people who read and write this absolute drivel. Unless that purge happens, the next time I see a "book" like this piece of crap, fuck it, I'm stocking up on water and canned foods for the intellectual apocalypse.

I don't know, but I find the idea of purchasing that book and burning/ripping it to shreds on the spot quite appealing.

If I recall correctly, it is supposed to mean 'tata for now.' Let me check.

No, it means 'Toodles 'Til Further Notice,' so I got the idea, but not the actual meaning. Damned leet/netspeak.

'Toodles 'Til Further Notice'? Wtf? That's not even a common saying, except for preteen assholes who can't spell 'Goodbye". Ugh, it's becoming an epidemic, first the article about how kids can't spell correctly, and the teachers who let them, and now a published book glorifiying talking like a fucking moron.

I have not read this book, so I don't know if it's good or not on its content. However, just discounting it for the form is absurd, because it is of innovation such has this that literary progress is born. Here's an example: Most of you would say that you should not, in any circumstance, write a book in the second person, right? Only those cheap Choose Your own Adventure preteen books do that, right? Not quite. late Italian author Italo Calvino wrote If On a Winter's Night a Traveller, which has half of its chapters written in the second person, and is a damn masterpiece. Now granted, given that this particular book appears to be in the teen drama genre, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to be considered a masterpiece, but that doesn't mean the format can't be used well by a decent writer. Don't be so close minded. The essence of good literature is experimentation.

Actually it's great timing. The third book in this trilogy entitled "l8r, g8r" comes out tomorrow!

And I may get ripped for this, but these books don't really bother me. I'll never read them. I'll never recommend them. And if anyone over the age of fifteen does read them, then I will have strong doubts for their mental capacity. But for the myspace generation texting messages on their cell phones in between middle school classes, I can see the appeal to something like this. It's a good way to trick them into eventually reading "real" books by luring them in with these pieces of literary vomit.

As long as English class continues to bitchslap the little miscreants into proper writing, grammar, and spelling I don't see anything all that bad here. I mean we've already had "ebonics" taught in classrooms. You got to figure that the common abbreviations and "lols" will eventually be included in the mainstream discussion of communication (ephonics maybe?). Literature has utilized the "dialects" of the story's setting since it's inception.

It's just anything set in a world of IM is a horrorshow most of us never want to visit.

EDIT: TTFN has been "ta-ta for now" in a lot more places than it's been "toodles 'til further notice."

I'm reasonably sure that leetspeak won't end up in a normal conversation. You know how retarded you sound saying that out loud? That would deter people from doing it, right? Oh man, this ttyl thing has completely shot my opinion of humanity to hell.
