Alright, boys, girls, it's time to get serious. Reddit, 4chan, and so many other lesser boards have weighed in on this hallowed topic, but their bout of idiocy make their opinion worthless. We need some good ol' DLP logic on the topic (and I need some animes with good waifus to watch).

So I ask you, who is your waifu and why is she worse the Alice Nakiri and Zero Two?

 

I have only an amateur knowledge of carton tiddies, but I'll do my best.

Wasn't a huge fan of bleach, but her character is adorable.

 

There's a mix of good and bad. The magic system in the background is absolutely amazing. Taken from the wiki:

There are a lot of incredibly cringey moments, but the protagonist is skilled, cool, and aloof, which makes it a breath of fresh air compared to the screeching monkeys who populate a lot of anime. There are admittedly some harem antics, but for once the male character is cool enough to pull off that level of attention from the women around him - and all these side-characters have their own fairly interesting things going on.

As far as plot goes, it's a little lacking. It seems like the writer created a fascinating world with some clear and consistent points of divergence from the real world, and then contrived a few scenarios to showcase this world. The series is really just a vehicle through which we can look at a lot of the things lurking in the background, so sometimes events seem a little less tied together than I'd like.

A big focus towards the end is a typical anime tournament which takes up a fair few episodes - but this isn't the usual trial by combat, but rather the magic olympics. Characters use various types of magic to compete in events like racing around a track on a surfboard, destroying and defending "territory" as represented by pillars of ice, etc. It's a good way of showing practical applications of this fascinating science-based magic.

It's definitely a guilty pleasure, full of anime tropes like the brother/sister infatuation. It's done with a bit more class than they usually are, though. Giving a rating is pretty hard: there are a lot of objectively bad tropes and design choices, but they're implemented so much better than usual that it's absolutely worth a look even if you're burnt out on them.

I found it fairly rewarding once I got a few episodes in. If you give it a try, let me know how you get on.

How is a Gary Stu protag a refreshing thing in an adaptation of trashy LNs?

The plot has a very clear thread "the Chinese are at fault", well at least the part that anime covers. Americans were at fault for the vampires from the black hole.

Speaking of the world, that map, always that map. East EU, West EU.

 

Something about the execution made it feel more like watching an adult in that Gary Stu role than a screeching child, which seems to be the usual go-to for this kind of thing. I won't claim it's a particularly nuanced or intelligent character design, just that the character seemed to fit the role rather than being a constant contrast because of dumb humour undermining it at every turn.

As far as China VS Japan goes...
