    In both fanon and canon?

Daphne Greengrass. It's an OC with a canon name. I tend to skip fics that name her as a main character/pairing these days.

Luna. The sacred child of fanfiction. IRL I'd find her extremely awkward to be around, I'd politely avoid her whenever possible. Its strange how crucial she can become or how many fics place importance on becoming friends with her. It sometimes comes across as a character's ability to be friends with Luna defines if you're a good person or a bad person.

McGonagall; lots of people worship her and say how cool she was, but apart from a few ‘cool’ remarks, please name one instance before the end of DH in which she helped Harry and their cause effectively.

The Marauders, most definitely. I'm all for people liking characters I'm not fond of but many people seem to put them on their own pedestal, equating them to the likes of Dumbledore and Voldemort. I have never seen a single marauderfic. that didn't downplay or try to rationalise their (j & s') bullying, or acknowledge that on top of bullying random people, they were also dicks to their friends e.g. wormtail, who they called wormtail.

Sirius Black....I just don't understand it. I didn't like him in the books, I thought he was a terrible influence and not actually very nice.

I get logic of the whole he loved Harry, wanted to provide him a home, was his godfather...but I still don't get why he is so hyped up.

I have no idea why people like Snape to be honest, guy is an immature asshole who can't let go of something that happened more then a decade ago, as awful as it was.

She taught him how to do transfiguration. That was pretty helpful.

I think he meant "When was transfiguration ever helpful?" Which is a fair question since in J.K Rowling's books about magic she decided the only truly useful spells would be green light that kills you and "disarming" spell that does whatever the author wants it to that week.

It was probably useful in his OWL exam where he scored an Exceeds Expectations.

Ever have a tender moment happen and, "Shit, no condom!"?

Transfiguration was wholly responsible for Hogwarts birth control.

That would be the point. She's a named Slytherin with basically no backstory, allowing authors to use her. in any way they want.

Some people find weirdness and awkwardness endearing, even if you don't.

Because he's a tragic character who suffered horribly and then had his life cut short before he could ever clear his name or live up to the various things he wanted to make up to his godson.

While I can understand not liking Sirius as a teenager, I can't think of anything he did between year 3 and his death that would count as "not very nice" or "a terrible influence".

I like McGonagall not because she was an ally to Harry, but because she was a proper teacher. She was stern, but fair. She clearly cared deeply for her students, but did not allow this to unduly influence her ability to wield authority. She enforced the rules of the school, because teenage magical anarchy is just the worst, but she wasn't above bending them when she could (and when it only benefitted her students). We don't see a great deal of her day-to-day as Head of House, but she was beloved enough by Harry that he Crucio'd someone who spat at her. In a series of halfass, shoddy, unqualified professors teaching unimaginably valuable skills to our protagonist, Minerva stands out as someone who genuinely deserved to be a teacher of students.

My lack of hype is Madame Bones. And Susan, of course. Her canon position is a very tempting draw for authors looking to give Harry allies in the Ministry, but she's pretty quickly attacked and rendered entirely irrelevent to the war.

She never defends Harry or any of her students against Snape and Umbridge even though she is the head of the house.

Then why not Tracey Davis? She is also Slytherin with basically no backstory, allowing authors to use her. in any way they want.

Dumbledore says that Sirius could have treated Kreature much more humanely. Also, his love for Harry should not make us overlook the fact that his treatment of Snape was quite disgusting. Also he was negligent of Harry letting Dumbledore literally be his guardian. He was also quite reckless and not of a sane mind.

Except people do use Tracey Davis in exactly the same role? I'm not sure what you are trying to argue.

And Kreacher could have not muttered insults to literally everyone in almost every scene.

I made it quite clear Sirus' teenaged years are another matter. Teenagers are stupid. It's also quite clear that Snape was not solely the victim and he also did shitting things.

I'm not sure what stupidity you're trying to argue here. Where was Dumbledore ever state in canon to be Harry's guardian? And if he was, how is that negligent?

You try being locked up in a house of horrors for more than a year and not yearn for freedom.

    Kreacher. It's Kreacher. #triggered

I don't think you've read the books, I know you don't know how to use 'literally' correctly, and I'm starting to suspect we've seen you here before.

I agree that fanon Daphne has become annoying, if only because she's almost always the same character. But why her instead of Tracey Davis? I think it just comes down to the names, honestly. 'Daphne Greengrass' sounds more interesting than 'Tracey Davis.' It's easier to give that name a whiff of wizarding aristocracy.

@Dark Lord Porn, if you genuinely think McGonagall didn't defend Harry against Umbridge, I think you could stand to read OotP again - or possibly for the first time.

I think McGonagal failure in OotP is how little she new about her house, everyone remember McGonagal scene when she told Harry to just not make a fuss, I'm sure MG didn't know to what length Umbridge went in her abuse.
Others hold against MG, is Snape treatment to Gryffindor house, and how she didn't stood to defend them, nor her decisions in the first book, when she took 100 points and detention with Hagrid.

We see her defending him in the career meeting with Umbridge.
But somewhat he it ring hallow with her absent during most of the time.
In second year, her student was hound with the all heir of Slytherin, in third year there is a mass murder after him.
We also see her treatment to Nevile Longbottom, which isn't far with how Snape deal with him, remember her comments to him during the 4th year.
Make Nevile feel even smaller will really help, maybe try to first assess why Nevile is so poor in switching charms.
(Am I wrong ? or i remember too much fanon that polluted my mind? which is a possibilty)

MG major issue, she was a doormat to what ever the plot needed her, if it was for the adults letting Harry down she was part of it, if it is needed to stand to Umbridge she was part of it.

I think her, Flitwick, Pomfrey, Sprout, Trelaweny and Hooch weren't utilized enough in the series.
Nor the house Perfects of Gryffindor in the early years.

I think the transfer of the series from children to young adults left us with many holes, that Fanon is doing great work (when it is good) to touch it.

I also think Andromeda, Tonks, and Sirius has more to offer than they offered in canon, we just need not to throw our self into the various chilche surrounding them.

The more I think about it, the more I have issues with Hogwarts stories, because of the gap between Harry and Voldermort is usually covered either with moronic methods or just absurd.

We rarely see that Harry while might be one day the next Dumbledore tier wizard of his generation, he knows he can bridge the gap between him and Riddle in direct methods, Riddle knows much more and has experience.
Something I think that define Wizard more than just doing tricks with their wand.

Looking for indirect methods , or Harry utilizing Riddle certain weakness to attack from that angle.

Which is why one of the best methods to attack Riddle is obtaining his soul anchors, just make the story more interesting in getting them, and how Harry who is now possessing such item can fuck up Riddle.

    Edit:
Another character rarely used with the potential it has, is Kreacher, the house elf is old, lived in one of the more notorious dark families.
Maybe Kreacher and Harry can find method to deal with Voldemort, I don't buy the Black heads thinking of submitting to someone else, they probably saw Voldemort as a tool and had a plan for when he won.
Shame they had insane house members also.

    Hermione.

Don't get me wrong, she's great. However, I do think she's overrated. I see people all the time saying that Harry and Ron were useless without her and that she would have beaten Harry in a duel and other inaccurate statements like that.
