I, for one, adore a good contemplative riddle and decided to make this threat for all people who share a similar passion. Share riddles, solve riddles. Please post intelligent answers and don't use up space with some supposedly "witty" remarks for the sake of a few inaudible laughs. You can use riddles you've heard of, or ones you have made yourself.

Here's a (debateably) easy one I thought up to start the thread off:

    "Eight crazy tramps,
    commune under a bridge.
    One brags about his cousin;
who met a wistful german princess.

She wore a black and red gown for the ball later that evening.
She was waiting patiently for the king to decide which suit to wear.
How many can the king choose from?"

    (Not very poetic, I know)

Edit (side note): just caught a glimpse of the lunar eclipse - If you're in/near Briton check if you can see it. It's all red and eerie.

Is it four? Like a deck of cards?

EDIT: Wait. My answer makes no sense, it kinda disregards the first...'verse'.

    Correct-a-mundo

    See the play on words?

"Eight crazy tramps, >>> "crazy eights"
commune under a bridge. >>> "bridge"
One brags about his cousin; >>> "bragg"
who met a wistful german princess. >>> "whist/German whist"

She wore a black and red gown for the ball later that evening. >>>"red and black"
She was waiting patiently for the king to decide which suit to wear. >>> "patience"
How many can the king choose from?"

When I first thought this up it was simply: "How many suits can a king wear?". I added the story for clues since the simple question was a bit random and empty. Perhaps the clues weren't as obvious as I'd anticipated.

Thinking up a new one... feel free to contribute.

Yeah I'll give it a go.

"I run but never walk. I have a mouth but never talk. What am I?"

OFF TOPIC: I saw the eclipse from here (N.I.), but it didn't look like much except a moon waning in the wrong direction.

A river? Since rivers can be described as "running" and they have a "Mouth" which opens into the sea.

I think I heard that one before, and river was the answer.

Think of words ending in gry, angry and hungry are two of them. There are three words in the English language, what is the third one? If you have read carefully, I have already told you the answer.

I got someone with that one just yesterday.

Also Off Topic: I only glimpsed at the eclipse, it was kind of trippy.

"gry" - too obvious. It means "small".

Here's a new one (not my own creation, but a teaser till I can think of a good, perplexing one) :

"By night they are here without being fetched,
by day they are gone; without being stolen."

    Actually, gry isn't the answer.
The answer is "language". I said that, "There are three words in the English language" which is a true statement. I then followed to ask what the third word was, and of course, the third word in "the English language" is language. I didn't get it right the first time I heard it either.
The answer to yours is the stars, though.

Something in the sky probably. The moon or the stars or something? Probably stars, because you said 'they'.

How many holes in a polo?

    EDIT: He ninja'd me^^

/\ Four? One in"a" one in "p" and one in each "o"??

    On a separate note:
That isn't a riddle. Riddles are supposed to be a series of clues using knowledge of sayings, euphemisms and metaphors. What you've got there is a "trick-question", where the answer as it is usually buried under grammatical errors (lack of inverted commas over "the English language" in this case), relation in spelling (id est: "there" and "their") or has little to no relation with what has been said.
    Please note the difference.

    New one:

"Sons don't fall far from me."

There are two possible answers for this... either requires the same trend of thought, so it makes no difference.

On a simple guess, a block? As in, "chip off the old block".

    Yup yup.

    Some more of my own:

    1.

I have a head - but only one eye and one ear.
I have a birthday - but nobody celebrates it.
    People just pass me around.
In the end - I am herded with others just like me.

    ==============================================

    Another:

    2.

    Life, the universe; everything.
Everything goes inside me; simplicity incarnate.
I am the seed of new life.
But my fate is always the same:
    Shatter and Decay.

Everything goes inside me; simplicity incarnate.

    ==============================================

    Last one:

    3.

A bishop stands in narrow a street.

Before him lies the castle of his enemies,
    surrounded by sinister decor.
This is the path of riotousness.

Behind him lies his own kinsmen.
    Clothed in etherial robes,
This is the path of security.

Which path does the wise man choose?

I'm going to guess that no.2 is Destruction/Death.

And a poke in the dark about no.3 is neither. The bishop was never wise.

    I speak in the mind,
But many ponder if they hear me.

Just made it up on the spot and is quite easy.

    /\ 2. Incorrect.
/\ 3. It is neither - but not for that reason.

It would be nice if you could elaborate on how you came to your conclusion of riddle 2 - I am intrigued.

To your riddle :"Thoughts" was the first thing that came into mind (pun not intended).

I may be editing those last three I made in due course to make them a little clearer.

    2. Again, incorrect
    3. Spot on. The whole "riotousness" and "security" thing was a ruse.
I guess it was when I changed the "the servant of his enemies" to "the castle of his enemies" that gave it away.

    #1 (very easy) a coin.
    #2 entropy?

    Eternally I am 1 to 6,
    At rest I am 15 to 20,
    I am always showing 5,
but I am never ever 21 unless I am flying
    ------------
The key to life and death is everywhere to be found, but if you do not find it in your own house, you will find it nowhere. Yet, it is before everyone's eyes; no one can live without it; everyone has used it. The poor usually possess more of it than the rich; children play with it in the streets. The meek and uneducated esteem it highly, but the privileged and learned often throw it away. When rejected, it lies dormant in the bowels of the earth. It is the only thing from which the Philosopher's Stone can be prepared, and without it, no noble metal can ever be created.

^ "entropy" is incorrect, I'm afraid.

Taking a stab in the dark of yours - "15"? The first line obscures it a bit, but those are my first thoughts.
