Hack apparently updates your backup email to a different one - first step to a password reset according to newest update in the thread.

Well, that settles it. Until there's solid confirmation that this shit is fixed, I'm not touching FFN. Guess I shouldn't have deleted my AO3 account.

You're better off reading the thread on Reddit; I'm just the messenger.

The difference is that we sort through the stories here, not FF.net, and haven't been getting high on flaming teenage girls since NuMetal was a thing. If your dearest hobby is "cleaning up FF.net", then I'm sorry, you have no life.

Re: The FF.net admins. I can vouch for them actually existing. They may look like a unicorn, but they are there: I had an email exchange with them. Or rather, him -- there is only one. Which explains at once why you never see him, because lolOneAdmin for all of FF.net. If it does get fixed, keep a lookout at his blog (fictionpress link).

    New thread, btw.

Long and short of it: don't visit profiles, don't be logged in. probably.

@Zombie to be clear, what I said was a joke...sorry if the tone of the post didn’t convey that.

How the hell is there only one Admin? How can one person be expected to keep a site like FFNet functional?

    They don't.

The company isn't even registered at an office. It's just some guy's house.

I'm working on my story and not having any problems. I suppose having been logged in already might make a difference.

    Explains a lot, doesn't it?

Now to be fair, I do believe there exists some form of "staff", however small it may be, to deal with the daily stuff, but naturally, this is of no help here, because it's a dev issue. You need Xing (owner and admin) to fix this. And I'm pretty sure he will -- but don't expect communication. You'll get a note on the blog when it's done. It's been that way since like 2003.

Is personal information safe so far? If the attacker can change the email addy, can he see the current one? What about PM's for example? If yes, what would that mean with the new GDPR?

Honestly I have no idea how ff.net is still going strong. It has never evolved it's tagging system afaik, new good search function (like scryer<3) or filters. Now something like this added on top.. AO3 is not really an option either, the tagging/search system etc. is even worse. I don't really understand why nobody is seriously trying to take over the top spot from FF.net.

It's a networking economy. Even if google+ were in every way better than facebook, everyone's already on facebook.

Presumably, Ao3 was that attempt, and turns out it's not so easy after all.

I also don't really mind FF.net -- as a writer, it's comfortable enough. Not clunky, just the bare-bones stuff you really need: A way to post a story, and a way to receive and respond to reviews. The end. It's refreshingly oldschool; functional, not gimmicky.

Yeah same. There is also useful userjs like fanfic tools and user styles like prism. That make it look more modern and have neat features without being too invasive.

    I'll never use Ao3.

My biggest takeaway from this is that Critics United is still a thing that's discussed. It's like a time capsule. It's the same feeling I get when I encounter a group of people who are still talking about Gamergate or Chanology.

Also yeah, Ao3's tagging sucks. Say what you want about ff.net, but limiting the amount of characters you can list to four really makes things idiot proof, and streamlines the story searching process a lot.

I mean I've honestly never heard of Critics United. Don't think they've ever been on DLPs radar.

I also like FFN's functionality well enough, but the admin has to fix this shit before I go back.

They're really only a thing on FFN itself, and even there it's among the people they targeted and their friends and readers.

They're only so big, and I've never encountered them first hand myself - but they're the sort that sticks in your mind through sheer pettiness and small minded elitism.
