    I'd argue that she ment it as a warning system and a punishment. But one intended to temporarily brand the traitor. In that the jinx would cause the acne to sprout but would not keep in there. After a few weeks of shame it would go away on its own. She was unaware of the possibility of permenant scarring.

    Admittedly this is a charitable reading, the girl did imprison a woman in a jar.

    Few questions.
    1) Did her method took circumstances into account ? while the DA secret was important for the trio, I can see Umbridge use leverage to get what she want.
    2) In the end she didn't even remember over what she got her punishment.
    3) We have another example of people entering contracts without knowing they did, reminds me the Goblet of Fire
    4) Internal logic and consistence wasn't JKR strongest trait.
    5) Better method would be to alert Hermione directly that someone sneak on them, instead of checking if someone had a bad face day.

    Doubt it . Marietta was probably being pressured by her mommy who works in the ministry .


    The purpose was pain and humiliation. It was not an advance warning system .

    I believe it was Hermione experimenting with that piece of magic and unsure if it will hold. I think she didn't think it through and did placed the curse as a afterthought.
