The tagging system on AO3 is actually pretty useful, even if it's often overused.

When you're doing an AU fic, you can explain a lot of the changes, in general terms, within the tags. This means readers don't get suckered into reading something they have only a little interest in, and people know vaguely what to expect. Using too many dilutes the meaning, especially when it's anyone who appears in text at all, and any relationships that happen, but most writers aren't too bad.

However, you do get sarcastic tags ("Endeavor's A+ Parenting") that share commonality with non-sarcastic ("Inko's A+ Parenting"), and ones that end up being half-and-half, depending on the story (All-Might's A+ Parenting"). Then you get the tag wars - I used to see a lot of "No beta we die like men", then a few with "No beta we die like women"... And now "no beta we die like non-binary authors with procrastination issues", which is all mildly amusing.

    Inconsistent formatting.

I don't care if you want to double break for paragraphs, or if you want to indent. But make up your mind. Don't change on a per-chapter basis.

Using Hogwarts:A History as exposition well into 4th and 5th year.

Did canon still used it in the last book? I think the birthplace of Gryffindor being Godrics Hollow was in Hogwarts: A History, I am not sure however. If it is, well than the author is simply true to the original.

I don't remember reading about it . It would be fine if Hermione remembered what she read in the book and said it as exposition .I draw the line at carrying around a pocket Hogwarts:A History, referring to it and quoting verbatim .

Hermione discusses bringing it with them at the beginning of the book, and does bring it. There's a quoted passage in the chapter "Godric's Hollow".

Okay just checked, I was indeed wrong it's " A history of magic" she uses and she indeed carries it with her. But to be fair, I dont think there is much different which basic book you use as a plot device.

Found a story. The dialogue is cringy, but what annoys me more is the author ends nearly every sentence with an exclamation mark.

Not worse than beginning every sentence with "I do declare," .

Didn't the original (English) pokemon games do that - every sentence ending in either a question mark or an exclamation mark?

    1. Goblins shitting themselves with joy after Harry is nice to them once.

    2. Goblin rituals where blood on parchment gives an output of truly retarded shit, including but not limited to a list of Potter properties across the globe, list of curses placed on Harry, how Harry is not Harry Potter but actually Lord Hadrian James Potter-Black-Slytherin-Gryffindor or Harry James Salazar Rasputin Riddle .

Often a precursor to bad political fics and endless holidays abroad.

Harry being mega-rich is bad, but Harry having stacks of 4710512753 knuts makes it much worse.

Imagine finding out you were the unknown heir of the Rothschild-Vanderbilt-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha-Brandenburg-Augusto-Claudians by virtue of a banker taking you into a room filled with nickels.

Harry goes to Gringotts, opens several long sealed vaults filled with mountains of gold that would make Mansa Musas jaw drop, goes on ye olde shopping trippe of doom... and the economy actually reacts to the amount of currency in circulation doubling overnight.

It annoys me from a financial perspective, not because of that, but because rich people get rich by making their money work for them. It doesn't sit in a vault, it's spent on sound financial investments making more money.

The most common way to explain that away is Gringotts making investments on behalf of the estate .

Doesn't work that way. It would require Gringotts to have twice the cash they need to do things.

    Just admit it's stupid.
