Heard an interesting question once...how would our perception of Snape be different/same had he been a black man? Generally curious what people think on that question.

 

I think some people would think that he is creepier, others would sympathize more, but I, along with most people, would still think that he is a loser.

So if Snape is black then it's a case of a bunch of kids being dickish to one another partly-but-not-entirely because they like the same girl and then one of them being such a massive douche he comes up with a plan to kill the other guy and also his infant son so that the girl they both liked will be a widow and he can for the first time in his life get his dick wet but it doesn't pan out so he spends six years shitting on the son who survived where his teenage crush didn't while also obliquely saving his life sometimes in some weird scheme to pay off his dad's life debt.

Also, he'd be black.

 

It would add another element, but I don't think it'd change much. Snape wasn't written to be a sympathetic character. He was a bitter man unable to move past. There's context of course (his home life and James being a dick), but at the end of the day he was still taking out his demons on a child. He has his few redeeming qualities, but he's mostly just a cunt.

 

Except we don’t ever see Snape actually bully or curse James. Is Lupin a reliable narrator or is he trying to make his best friend look better in the eyes of his son? We don’t know.

Yeah Snape is a jerk regardless, but I’m not asking about whether Snape would factually be a jerk. I’m asking about perceptions and likability of the character.

Imagine the effect it would have on Snape’s reception if he were black.

For one thing you’d have the only person of color on the Hogwarts staff be an asshole.

 

I never understood where the whole James was a bully came from. The same goes for all the people who thought Fred and George were bullies. For me, it seems like those people were bullied in their past and are particularly sensitive to the "issue". (I put issue in quotes because dealing with adversity is a part of growing up).

James wasn't a bully. He and Snape were just two guys who liked the same girl. Clear reason for mutual animosity there. Sure James may have shown the school Snape's underwear but Snape was literally studying Dark Magic for fun. He was fucked up. And besides when it really counted, James saved Snape's life. Snape got James killed.

 

We see him deliberately arrange for Voldemort to kill James and Harry. We know he had an interest in spells like Sectumsempra while at school. We know he has no qualms shitting on kids. We know that he was hanging out with would-be Death Eaters by fifth year, and this upset Lily.

Put it this way: I trust Lupin's narrative a lot more than I trust Snape putting one memory off in a pensive as being the authority of how things went down between them. Plus, yeah ok it was a ruse, but the reason Snape was following Lupin as a werewolf is he thought they were up to something that he could get them in trouble for. It's just that Black used that knowledge - that Snape was a nosy little git - to Snape's detriment.

 

Snape? This is Snape.

That is the Snape we do see, the Snape that has had a lifetime to mature and move past his schoolboy self, and he's still a cruel, bitter little wizard-nazi jumping at any opportunity to bully schoolchildren who can't fight back. Honestly, fuck the idea that schoolboy Snape was just a poor innocent cherub who never hurt anyone until the big bad Chad Potter forced him to go sign up for literal fucking genocide.

Adult school teacher Snape was a cruel bully that couldn't resist tormenting children whenever he had the chance, if you think angsty angry teen Snape had better impulse control and less anger then you do you I guess.

 

I’m not pro Snape. I agree with everything y’all are saying. My question regards perceptions and audience reception. That’s it.
