And now for the rest.

 

This weirdly archaic counting system is actually a pretty interesting piece of linguistic history. The Genevans don't use it, and the Belgians kinda use it in some places, but in Metropolitan France and Québec they will.

It's actually a remnant of an old Celtic base-20 counting system from way back which carried on even after latinisation. The Italians would use base-10 counting systems in their languages but the French with still lingering Celtic influence would continue in the usage of the base-20 system. For example, 30 would be vingt-dix (20-10), and 50 would be deux-vingt-dix (2-20-10), etc. Languages like Cornish, Breton, and Scottish Gaelic still count in this way because they've become too irrelevant to have a need to adapt set in their tradition.

So why do the French, Québecois, and Belgians still use it?

Because they're the only ones with language regulating bodies that tell people what they should and shouldn't say. In Belgium, a lot of Walloons just don't give enough of a shit to care about how the government says they should talk, so they don't say it.
