On the wider topic of canon/not-canon, I would say that what we are really looking at is sources of knowledge about the Potterverse. I would rank the various sources somewhat like this:

    Canon
Professionally produced books written by JK Rowling. Indisputably valid, albeit potentially conflicting.

    1. The main series: Books 1-7
    2. Companion books: Quidditch through the ages, Fantastic Beasts and Tales of the Beedle Bard

    Deuterocanon
Snippets written by JK Rowling but not vetted through professional release as a stand-alone product. Liable to be changed or contradicted by future works. Not universally accepted for this reason and therefore classified as deuterocanon.

    3. Pottermore

    Apocrypha
Professionally published non-book sources. Format limitations should be kept in mind. Possibly AUs.

    4. Fantastic Beasts (movie series)
    5. Harry Potter (movie series)
    6. Cursed Child
    7. Authorised games

    Mythology and traditions

Exists in the consciousness of fans, but of limited validity.

    8. Previous literary analysis and reviews
    9. Informal statements made by JK Rowling
    10. Fanon

In summary, I would say that JK Rowling's ability to change the Potterverse depends entirely on the medium through which she seeks to do so. A tweet is not canon. Artistic freedoms should be expected from any non-written source, and even aside from that, it is not clear that the movies portrays the same world as the books. Should JK Rowling decide to write a new book series in the Potterverse, I would accept it as canon - though I can see why some would insist that canon was closed by the time the main series and companion pieces finished - and so it would arguably be deuterocanon.

For those who have had an aching need to know, and I know most of us have, JK Rowling revealed that Dumbledore and Grindelwald used to have sex. And of course this is revealed in the extras of the DVD. Not that I’m saying Dumbledore should’ve told Newt about it, but her habit of revealing these things outside of the story continues to be annoying.

I consider Pottermore, Shitting in the Corridors, and Cursed Child to be canon in the sense that they provide the proper answers for a trivia contest on Harry Potter canon. But completely irrelevent to fans and fanfiction that doesn't choose to use them in the sense that they're full of stupid shit like wizards randomly shitting where they stand, Merlin being transported through time to fill the gaping "non-evil Slytherin" gap, and Cursed Child.

All I'm saying is that someone has an intense sexual relationship with her own ego.

Wait, did people not know that Dumbledore and Grindelwald were totally gay lovers? Cuz if not, this isn't news. You can't exactly be lovers without, y'know, making love.

I always thought it was unrequited love. I don’t recall her ever saying Grindelwald returned that love.

It's been years, and my memory's never been the best, so that's certainly possible. I always understood it as them being in an active relationship that soured because of the whole Arianna thing.

I at least get a brief chuckle from all the memes that crop up every time JK decides to fill us in on crucial aspects of the lore.

I'd have thought that given the amount of shit flung her way for teasing a gay relationship without any real textual evidence for it - in the books or films - she might want to keep quiet about whether they were boning or not unless the next film is actually going to directly reference the relationship.

I don‘t think JKR ever heard of the concept of letting her work speak for itself. Or if she has, she most certainly decided soem time ago that it‘s not for her.

She‘s obviously still actively working on ancillary material in the universe concerning canon characters, but her constant backdoor reveals (pun not intended) have been grating on my nerves for years. If she leaves clues in the texts that can only be pieced together with context some years later, fine (that‘s actually what I would consider somewhat clever storytelling), but some things like the whole Nagini situation – something I remain convinced she did *not* just sit on for 20+ years – are just degrading to the original works and the fanbase as a whole.

Or, you know, just show what you want to say about your characters on screen. Especially in an ongoing series, I would consider it bad form to drop important reveals regarding character development in the extras of the frickin‘ home release.

That would require some self-reflection. I don't think JK has time for that these days between volleys of Twitter pwnage. But I'm willing to bet it will be praised by LGBT folks for inclusion and at the same time condemned by other LGBT folks for the reason you outlined. Some people will do both, after forgetting they had already taken an opposing position.

    I love the Internet.

As a member of the LGBT community and perhaps the biggest Dumbledore fan ever (don't @ me), her repeated delving into the subject of his sexuality was very welcome at first, but as time has worn on and she has remained mum on actually including such content in the movies (though I'm still holding faith for the last three Fantastic Beasts movies), I can see how some folks think it's spineless fanservice and pandering. Personally, it's starting to become a mix of wearisome and amusing all at the same time. The memes alone make for very entertaining timewasters.

Much like Cursed Child, I conveniently ignore them when it suits me.
