The short version is that English used to be not standardized, with inconsistent spellings of words. The canon contains a book titled Magick Moste Evile so my guess is that the fanfiction authors are trying to make it sound old-fashioned. I personally don't find anything wrong with it, unless there's no point or it isn't explained why a different spelling is being used.

Its a spelling of magic that is supposed to sound ye olde worlde. It is also used by some wiccans and those who practice witchcraft to distinguish between magic (as in rabbit out of hat) and their real magik (drawing on the power of the universe) . Thus you see the spelling in and around a lot of New Age writings and paraphernalia. So it has become somewhat tainted by association as the pretentious spelling of those who take this stuff way to seriously and wish to be distinguished from common 'magic'.

To be fair, it was actually spelled Magick for centuries, especially among the more learned monastic orders. Magic is relatively recent varition (as in, it became the de-facto accepted spelling circa the early 19th century IIRC).

That said, I'm pretty sure Magik is straight up modern nonsense, created specifically for that new age silliness you mention.

Oh yes, magick is the authentic ye olde spelling, it also gets used sometimes in wiccan circles. Magik is more popular, I guess magik looks cooler so you see more often.

On a similar vain some supernatural based subcultures will distinguish between fictional vampires and totally real vampyres. (Which is at least a genuine old spelling of vampire.) It has the same silly connetations of pretension and taking this shit way too seriously as magik has.

So like most things, time and place.

Sound bad like the Harridan crap that pops up from time to time.
I know there is a wall named after Roman Emperor, but who will name their children Harridan ?
Both Lily and James have sensible names.

It's Hadrian. Latin/Roman names are very common among wizards so it fits the themes of the books. It's just fucking stupid when people change Harry's name. The problem isn't with the name itself.

Harridan seems to be a synonym of shrew (as in 'the taming of a shrew' , not the animal ), so it would be indeed weird if Harry's true name was the equivalent of 'nasty woman'.

I know who you are talking about. The Author is woman, and apparently an ancient languages nerd who can't stand HP's piglatin.

I wanted to find something meaningless in there to be contrarian about, for a bit a humour, but I can’t, really. I also hate everything about it.

I don't know, "Hurt Draco" could just be taken as good advice. Sectumsempra.
