I think it’s the fact that the people responsible for Detective Pikachu managed to translate the Pokémon look a lot better for the real world than with Sonic. The eyes and feet in particular look all sorts of wrong when you compare it to the Sonic we know.

The most tragic thing is that making a somewhat faithful recreation would absolutely have been possible, there are some very good renders floating around the interwebs atm.

And the teeth… my God, the TEETH.

 

I think it's a combination of uncanny valley striking, and the fact that nothing good has been done with the Sonic IP in like 15 years, so there's not a lot of good will left to make up for it.

 

That is bad. And they should feel bad.

 

It's probably going to be one of the four movies I see in theaters this year.

Mania, Colours, and Generations were good.

 

Why did they pick Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik? Tim Curry would have been better.

 

Tim Curry is 137 years old.

 

I mean, I guess a guy in a wheel chair who suffered a debilitating stroke which pretty much ended his career could be Robotnik...

 

Honestly, the meme potential of a terrible Sonic movie makes it all worth it in my eyes. I bet it'll be legendary, if not in the ways the creators are hoping for.

 

Totally agree. I fully expect this to be one of those movies that becomes a staple of drunken mst3k reenactments, where we put on an awful movie and heckle it the whole way through.

The trailer is so very cringe inducing though, I'm definitely gonna have to be at least a little drunk to watch the movie at all.

 

I don't think any significant analysis is necessary to reveal the difference between the Detective Pikachu trailer and the Sonic trailer. The CGI in the Sonic trailer looks about 15 years out of date. It looks like a cheap TV show.

 

I do love that Jim Carrey Energy though even if the movie is going to be a fucking travesty.

 

To illustrate just what I think of the choice to use Gangstas Paradise for the trailer, he's an alternative that somehow manages to not be a worse choice.

 

I don't know if it's just me, but I don't think I laughed at a single joke in the Sonic trailer. My primary thought, throughout the trailer, was that the movie seemed immature.

And I'm not saying all CGI/animated movies are a bad thing. Detective Pikachu looks nice and I'll probably watch it.

 

The trailer was definitely tremendously cringe. I definitely got the immature/terrible movie vibe from it.

 

I agree. I went into both of these trailers with a similar level of skepticism. I left Detective Pikachu with "I need this in my life", and this one with "Eh... no thanks". Way too cringy. Whereas Detective Pikachu has Ryan Reynolds.

 

I'm pretty much over MCU now.

I am now ready for the DPCU.
