@Andrela, I predicted 2,3bln total box office. I see I undershot by quite a bit.

We're in the Endgame now. Avatar is going down, I'm sure of it.

That's still a longshot. Take into account that Avatar came out in 2009, before this era of regular billion-dollar box office movies. That was a titanic (hehe) achievement. Then again, so is 2bln in 11 days. We'll see if people go back for repeat viewings. Avatar had a longer, more stable run as opposed to modern blockbusters, which often dominate 2 weekends and then fall off.

If we're going to take inflation into account, I think Gone with the Wind is sitting on something like $4bn.

Also, re: infinity gauntlet switching spell idea, you could even use the fake infinity gauntlet we see in Thor Ragnarok.

I have a friend who went to see Avatar seven times back in the day because of the 3D effects. I’m scared of what he’ll do next year when the sequel comes out…

I think it will probably still easily top Dances with Aliens in the non-inflation lists even with the standard fall off (and good riddance because I fucking despise that movie and it does not deserve to retain its top spot for another year just because of 'ERHMERGERD 3D!').

Most of the Marvel smash hits have done about a 30-50% of their 1st to 2nd week domestic gross over the course of 3rd week to lifetime. Which means it should be sitting pretty at 800-900 million domestic at the end of it's run. I think the international market will easily pump out that extra 400-500 mil.

We could be looking at the first movie to break unadjusted 3 billion.

It's possible, but I think you may be underestimating the special factors which resulted in a higher than normal front-loading of Endgame ticket sales. Marvel ran a very successful "don't spoil the Endgame" marketing campaign which essentially scared people into going to see it as soon as possible.

So the really high opening weeks doesn't necessarily mean that the total number of people who want to see the film is as high as those numbers would normally suggest. Rather, it may well be that Endgame effectively shifted ticket sales from later in its run to the first couple of weeks. If so, we are about to see a pretty severe drop in sales.

I think the second weekend drop off would have been a lot more severe if that were truly the case. As is, it's being estimated as only about 59%. 4% more than Infinity War's second week.

But yes, next weekend will be the real indicator for future weeks. This is when the non-invested casuals come to see a blockbuster for the first time, and also when the uberfans do the bulk of their 3+ repeat viewings. If the falloff from second week is about 30-50%, then it is on track to breeze past Avatar.

I mean, Avatar was a good, if derivative, movie. It was well made, well written, and well acted, with excellent cinematography and visual design.

It was not, however, particularly noteworthy. It's kinda the movie equivalent of a good peanut-butter and jelly sandwich. It's enjoyable while you're eating it, but the base materials are so bland and uninspired that it doesn't linger in memory or stand out in any meaningful way. It's totally disposable, interchangeable with any of dozens of equivalents that satisfy the same urge.

And it's definitely in no way really deserving of record sales figures.

Man that attitude so rubs me the wrong way. Of course it is. No one was forced to watch it.

Just as Endgame will deserve it when it takes over.

I don't care if people hate it, saying it doesn't deserve it irks though.

I wouldn't even really call Avatar a movie or film. It's a piece of Art. A great piece of art at that. But it's definitely something that needs to be "experienced" rather than "viewed". I don't know, it's hard to describe but Avatar is kind of in a category/genre of it's own.

I am extremely pleased with the direction they are taking Spider-Man if the new trailer is any indication.

Honestly? I hate after the fact exposition, regardless if that was always their intent.

Leave that shit to fanfiction, otherwise put it in the movie.

It... kinda was. See (1:20 for Cap):

When Cap starts to try, you can see the hammer twitch, when it didn't move at all for anyone else, and Thor's expression flatline, before it goes totally still and Cap lets go a moment later without putting any visible effort into lifting it. Hell, if memory serves, there were people speculating whether or not Cap was jobbing it the moment that movie came out.

Also it's been confirmed before now by Wheadon. I thought it was pretty obvious that that was the angle they were going for there.
