I'm excited for it, but I figured this would be a problem. I'll wait for a month.

Found the full trailer plus a clip from the Prince Ali intro song for Aladdin.

Visually, it looks like they are headed far more for 'Disney does Bollywood' than Thousand and One Nights. I guess Agrabah is a fictional city and so they can do as they like, but Aladdin is seen as a Arabian folk tale so stripping it of its cultural associations to sidestep any accusations of insensitivity while keeping to the Disney version of this tale seems a bit like the cowards way to deal with the situation. Strikes me as similar to how they treated the 'Indians' in the last live action Peter Pan.

Yeah if you want to get technical, the orginal tale in Thousand and One Nights is set in China. But this is definitely a remake of the Disney version of the story which is definitely based off of the Thief of Baghdad and the tradition of the story being set in the Middle East, and the fact it's the only movie Disney had some set in that part of the world. It still seems off to me.

It looks... Okay. Videography of the song sequence felt particularly uninspired for some reason. Will Smith is game though basically playing his usual comedy character. They are already getting into stitching up the 'plot holes' like how the wishes should all have loopholes. I'm going to guess this one will be anther overcomplicated soulless spectacle with a few new subpar songs and nothing new to say about the story it's telling. It would be nice to get a good one of these at last but I'm not holding out hope.

I’m in the theater about to see detective pikachu. I’ve gotta say, the warm up commercials of 90’s Pokémon themed commercials is spectacular. Like the greatest thing.

John Wick 3 was great, definitely a return to form. They're good dogs

I loved all the previous Disney remakes aside from Dumbo, but I hated the original anyways.

That said. This looks bad. Nothing against will smith, but the budget looks so poor. The sultan’s beard looks fake.

The quality is so subpar. Not happy about this.

I agree the Prince Ali song looking very uninspired, I felt like it was too constrained and more akin to a stage production than anything like the cartoon where genie is alot more active and all over the place. Hate to say it but Will Smith looks very wooden there. If you watch that trailer while removing the Prince Ali song from the start it actually looks half-decent.

The budget looks poor for the amount of extras they have in the city, for some reason it feels underpopulated with the Prince Ali song and the chase through the streets with Ali and the guards. However the sultan's beard looked fine to me, and the CGI looks visually stunning in parts. Most of the faults I have with it can be put down to the director and choreographer really, some of those shots looked like they had limited to space to work with. But CGI wise it looks great.

Interested but not expectant of anything and I will probably just wait until I can stream it to watch it. Just another childhood movie I loved that will get butchered by the looks of it, visuals aside.

Objections to DJ Khalid aside, doing bad mainstream covers of a musical's songs to play during the credits is a time honored Disney tradition.

    Just saw John Wick 3.

As insane as it sounds, I'm really over the fighting/killing. I find it the least interesting part after the third movie.

Especially since the entire movie just felt like that fight scene from daredevil season 1 in the corridor.

I guess this means i didn't like it?

Also, I'm really fucking over JW's plot armour

Good song choice if nothing else. You gotta give them that.

It's not that bad. My problem at the moment is blandness of new characters.

With the new terminator, if you want to have a silent murder machine, you need someone with Arnold's pure physical presence or Robert Patrick's intensity. This guy appears to have neither.

The girl they're protecting lacks any charisma or at least rebelliousness of Edward Furlong.

Only Mackenzie Davis has something going for her, but no more than actors from last three films.

It's only a first trailer though.

It’s not that it looks bad, it’s just...please let the terminator series die. I stand behind the positiont that says T2 should have been the end.

I think this is kind of the problem with a lot of pieces of media these days. Everyone just wants to keep on going rather than letting a TV Show or Movie Franchise finish.

Pirates of the Caribbean was a great trilogy but the two extra movies just blemish it.

Harry Potter was both a great book series and an enjoyable movie series and while Fantastic Beasts was acceptable for the most part, Rowling hasn't shown any sign of stopping despite a decade long hibernation.

Star Wars came back for both a prequel series and a sequel series.

Supernatural has been going on for longer than some of my siblings have been alive and only now does it look like it's finally stopping.

They all had good solid endings but chose to carry on anyway.

Movies and shows just aren't made with "Endings" in mind anymore.

A good example of how to end a show was last year’s Brooklyn 99 finale. It ended on the best possible note that was five years in the making, but left a key question unanswered. Had the show stayed cancelled, people could’ve made up their minds, and had it been picked up, they would’ve had (and did have, as it turned out) the perfect incentive to tune in for the revelation a couple of months later.

In fact, the ending was crafted with the possibility of it being the final episode in mind, as Dan Goor (I think) pointed out in an interview sometime last year. In the years before, they were reasonably confident in being renewed, but last year they were doubts, so they tried to write an episode that could stand both as the show and series finale.

I also remember reading about the notion of shows that are on the bubble going out of their way to produce cliffhangers to improve their chances at a renewal.

I mean, these are all points, and from a quality perspective perfectly reasonable. However, the game here has never been about quality. It's about what will make the most money. Ever since the new Star Wars trilogy was successful at the box office, it showed that making endless sequels was a great way of generating profit. They don't have to be good, they just have to get people to watch it.

That's true. But ultimately there's only a finite amount of good will any given fanbase has. Lucas Film looks to have just about used up all of theirs and that was Star Wars, a cultural phenomenon unlike any other. At the end of the day, it's in the interest of their continued success that they create quality because that keeps people watching, especially for subsequent viewings. Quality story tends to trump everything else.
