MCU Spider-Man just wound up being Iron Boy. I was against the portrayal of Spider-Man in Civil War at the time, but now I look back and that's the most Peter Parker-like he's been even after two standalone movies.

Sony really fucked up with the Amazing Spider-Man movies, but I'll take the chance we might get something good again like the first two Raimi movies rather than the certainty of mediocrity under Disney.

I don't know, James Bond has had how many incarnations and people still go see those movies. Granted there are different circumstances.

They'd certainly have to work hard to get the public (and my own) trust.

Bond is a good example how it can work if done properly, but the problem is that it would be the second time when Sony reboots Spider-Man without giving the previous version a proper send-off and a resolution of his adventures.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually preferred Garfield to Maguire. I feel like Maguire's portrayal didn't appear confident enough to be Spider-Man. Yeah, he could pull off Peter Parker any day of the week but his Spider-Man just rubbed me the wrong way.

Garfield had the confidence to pull off Spider-Man (Slightly cocky, a bit arrogant, a witty remake here and there). Some people however say his Peter was terrible though and would never actually have been "unpopular". Here's the thing though, the requirements for what it means to be unpopular have changed over the years. Yeah, once upon a time it meant if you were a "Nerd" (Like Maguire's) but even nerds these days have their own friend group and being intelligent doesn't necessarily mean being unpopular. Garfield's Peter though was more of a "loner", most likely due to him just not socialising with people. Holland's Peter is unpopular because he comes from a lower class income in a school with rich kids (Though all the other kids are smart as well).

Honestly, gun to my head, if I had to choose between Holland in the Sony universe with no MCU connection vs Garfield, I'd go for Garfield.

I don't get how you think Holland's portrayal isn't accurate to Spider-Man? I'd say he's even more accurate than Maguire since he was a teenager and had the "Hyperness" and energy that Peter had in the comics. The only way he's dissimilar to comics Peter is that his suits are made by Stark Tech which don't really impact the story as long as he's not flying under his own power or pulling off Iron Man level feats.

Just give me more Spiderverse stuff and live action Spidey can go three for three for all I care.

The next phase of the MCU only works if Spider-Man holds it together imo.

Personally, purely on an entertainment level, I’d want Disney to buy DC and let Kevin Feige build a DCCU worthy of the name.

That's the big thing with this deal falling through IMO. Everything so far has set up Spider-Man as the post-Endgame Iron Man, aka the pillar around which the rest of the MCU rotates. He doesn't need to be in every movie, but his presence is the primary unifying link between them all, and I don't think the MCU will do nearly as well without him.

I'm not convinced that's true - they've announced an entire phase that doesn't have him at all, after all. I think the MCU would be poorer for his absence, but I don't think the whole thing will fall apart.

I don’t think it’ll totally fall apart, but it won’t be as strong at all.

This next phase is similar to the first phases of the MCU. Heroes doing their own thing.

It’s goubg to be less focused

Maybe this would have been a good idea 10 years ago. Now, not so much. The demands for diversity, which didn’t exist then, would mean an all female justice league, rather than the actual JL.

I might not be worse than the current DCEU, but it wouldn’t be better either.

    True
It’s also why I think marvel will likely go downhill

I have zero problem with diversity, but diversity for diversity’s sake is always poor quality

Wasn't there a thing going around a month or two ago where Disney was planning to do the whole Lady!Thor thing?

I wouldn't say it's super likely they'd pull something like he outlined, but it's definitely not out of the question. Especially given that we're getting shit like the 2016 Ghostbusters' remake which was explicitly that.

Marvel/Disney are still patting themselves on the back for Endgame having an unnamed gay character appear for 7 seconds. The idea that there's going to be any genuine focus on diversity going forward is baffling.

It's not as though that's unprecedented. Lady Thor was a comic series back in the 70s and this (or the 2014 reboot) is what the new Thor film is going to be based off of. Marvel is well aware of the profitability of diversity in the current line up, but that doesn't mean they're going to shoehorn it in without reason.

DC might not be as good as Marvel at making movies, but they're not stupid. They know that going the Ghostbusters route is a surefire way to tank a film before it even gets to theatres so they're going to pander to the diversity crowd with some careful character selections (or making some reasonable changes to established characters) and then make a film that's fairly shit anyway.

For sure, 'swhy I said I don't think it's likely. It's just something that's all but guaranteed to have been/be actively considered with most major projects like that, and in the unlikely event Disney buys out DC and launches a (new) DCCU, it would absolutely be on the table.

Honestly, I don't consider that even likely. Sure, it may be suggested in a meeting room somewhere, but there are hundreds or thousands of ideas that get passed around and then ditched because they're shit, or the target demographic wouldn't like it, or there's some other issue preventing it from happening. Not every idea can be Sharknado and I don't expect a genderbent Justice League to be one of them.

You have a lot more faith than I do in Hollywood executives to not blindly chase whatever fad is popular in pursuit of maximum dollars. Fair enough then, I suppose.
