I enjoy those every once in a while, but I've come to realize that they are basically:

"I'll reference this!"

Not going to get too hyped about the inclusion of the Knights of Ren (gotta lower my expectations on the whole this time around), but I am at least glad J.J. is delivering on some of his open Force Awakens threads.

Also, the D23 pictures/trailer won't be out for a while, but Rey is confirmed to at one point be wielding a double sided saber in the new trailer.

I'm not excited for this film at all and am tentatively excited for both The Mandalorian and Kenobi but doubt that they will deliver.

I just want it to be a last second reveal that Jar Jar was actually Palpatine all along and everything that has transpired has done so according to his design.

 

So Disney is now bankrupt of all motivation and talent in addition to being morally and creatively bankrupt, because the new poster (which looks like halfhearted fan art, sorry KHAAAAAAAN!!) is, apparently, a photoshop of the Hot Toys Palpatine figure.

Whether that's true or not, if Disney were one ounce more of a shit-show than it already is, it would be a street in San Francisco.

And I'm really not sure it is photoshopped (1st face toy, 2nd face poster, 3rd face mockup blend of toy and poster). The proportions on the nose, brow, and eyes are significantly different, and it looks more like drawn art than photomanipulation. I think it's infinitely more likely the toy image had a face angle/expression that they liked, so they had a digital artist attempt to recreate it.

Whatever the case, doesn't stop me liking it. I think the looming head is a nice homage to the teaser posters that came before it, paying particular respect to Return (lolRevenge) of the Jedi, which I own a real copy of.

No matter how much I dislike the new trilogy, I still get chills watching this, just because it's Star Wars. I can't help it.

But I won't get my hopes up. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, who knows?

 

No one says you can't enjoy bad movies.

 

Still going to watch this in theatre soon after it comes out. Not expecting a masterpiece (which I wasn't for the other two either, being honest), but should be entertaining enough provided Abrams doesn't make it Ep VI redux like TFA was New Hope redux in far too many ways. Then again, throwing someone into a reactor core is probably fine to repeat, so... Eh?

Did you expect him to publicly blast the previous movie? Even if he does privately think it sucked hard and closed off too many things he wanted to happen, he isnt going to come out and say that.

 

^This. Also...the idea that The Last Jedi, whatever you thought of it, wasn't broadly in line with Disney's vision for the franchise seems kind of dumb. It's not like they just left Rian Johnson alone with the toy box.

 

I'm not sure what about this is supposed to be upsetting? We knew at the start JJ wrote a loose outline for the sequels before fucking off, and that he, Rian, KK, and the lore team had talks about where they wanted the series to go.

But we also know Rian had almost full free reign to make his own creative choices for TLJ during writing and filming, and that he scrapped a lot of the early ideas to do his own thing. We've been told this numerous times, from numerous sources. What specifically he scrapped remains a mystery, but there is nothing here to implicate that JJ played a larger role in TLJ than previously reported, or that he was somehow responsible for all the terrible things about TLJ that would have been directly under writer/director purview (i.e. horrible dialogue / Luke's island fuckery / the abject terribleness that is everything Rose x Finn / Canto Bight subplot).

And being quite honest, the fact that JJ can say that TLJ hasn't derailed the general direction of the plot is actually a good thing. If he's being honest and this isn't "we totally had a plan all along okai" company spin, it means that the more dubious plot points of TLJ that were disappointing (Snoke's lack of background and throwaway death / Luke's inexplicable actions) somehow fit into the overall narrative.
