My name translates to 'The Duck'. I'm not creative when it comes to names, so I just picked something.

Mine is the name of a recombinant plasmid (small ring of DNA that bacteria often take up/exchange) I made for a bacterial genetics course back in college. The plasmid confers resistance to the antibiotic kanamycin as an indicator that the plasmid has been taken up. When kanamycin sulfate is broken down by the bacteria, it turns the agar substrate blue, which lets you know what bacterial colonies have the plasmid.

In application, you’d have other genes on the plasmid for what you actually want it to do, the blue color and kanamycin was just an indicator.

The name of the plasmid follows this form:

P(plasmid) Blue(creates a blue color in the agar) Kan(Kanamycin resistance)

I started using it as a gamer handle and just never stopped.

    You're Ellisande. Never squared it.

I've a few burner handles for places I don't care to be known around.

... and switched to Solfege once I felt, not too long ago, that I might establish a presence. To be honest, it wasn't my proactive intent to assert my own unfounded opinions; but rather that the occasional discussion sucked me in, and over time came to establish a familiar dynamic.

Solfege was a neutral and, I expected, obscure choice of name. There's character in it; and is otherwise inscrutable if you didn't care to notice.

Some may recognize my name as a Dwarven curse from the Inheritance Cycle, from when I had worse taste in fiction.
I still feel bad about that movie

I kept on wondering why your name looked familiar.

I picked this name because it's been my ffnet name I've had for years. Reason why I picked it is because my old handle 'Magical Beast' seemed silly so I was like how can I shorten this in a way that looks good? So, Magibe but that looked dumb so I thought of Jujubes and just crammed that in. It's pronounced Muh-Juub btw, no be.

They are gone... No, honestly nobody uses this name so you can use it everwhere. That is why I use it.

Skulduggery Pleasant. There was a charecter in it called China Sorrows, which when I was 14 or so seemed the coolest name ever.

I went with Lady Sorrows since everyone was titling themselves around 2007/8. I was completely oblivious to how emo it sounded. Dropped the Lady a few years back but kept Sorrows since after a decade I'm kind of stuck with it.

I was a huge Lord of the Rings fan so it's a play on 'nazgul'.

Screenname was Fogo for a long time (Portuguese for 'fire', got it from the restaurant), but it kept being taken in enough places that I went back to the one my cousins came up with me for my first World of Warcraft character.

Needed a nickname for WoW, chose some random word in (possibly fan-based) Sindarin (I believe), then lopped off the last couple of letters at some point in the years after, considering everyone was doing that anyway. (Granted, they usually also omitted the t, but that, if nothing else, is a nickname that is just about always taken already, so I didn't cut that.)

The dictionary of obscure sorrows post I saw after deciding to leave the “create an account” page because I didn’t know what to name myself.

    Sonder (Uncountable, neologism)
The profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passed in the street, has a life as complex as one's own, which they are constantly living despite one's personal lack of awareness of it.

    In Malay, it means “without”.

After the legendary conqueror, of course, because it was reading about him which got me interested in history in the first place. I've used this nick from when I was quite young. In fact it formed the base for my ever first email id as well.

Haha, I've been thinking of just owning it and going back to Ellisande tbh.

And yeah, I use different handles in different places I don't feel like being associated with.

Named myself after a character from the Rangers Apprentice series which I loved as a teenager.
