If you liked Summer Crowns, there was a spiritual rewrite by another author called Chasing Dragons I think. It wasn't bad.

This is some top tier fanfiction. I didn't like the start of it because I disliked how the TV show turned Jon Snow into such an moron(then again you could say that for all of the characters). However now it's its own animal. You should be proud of it. I can't wait to see where you're going with this.

The Ice Dragon is a recent AU political Jon story I'm enjoying. Well written with interesting characters and plots.

    I'm not impressed.

Have skimmed up to chapter 6, and while it does focus heavily on politics, it doesn't quite understand that setup is important. You can't just throw us into a situation when it's being resolved, because so fucking what? Why should we care? What are the stakes?

Secondly, the plan is over explained. There's no revelling in Jaehaerys cleverness. Perhaps if it were left a bit of a mystery because there was setup, this explanation might work, but it's simply not there. The first truly political scene we have with Mooton jumps straight into the solution.

Even the thing with Viserys and Connington is a bit wtf. Viserys, as far as we can tell, did not grow up an annoying brat. He only became so after years of bitterness spent in Exile and having to sell his mother's crown to survive. But okay, there's a need for na antagonist and understanding characters is hard so let's ignore that. Why Connington is sucking up so hard to Viserys is questionable too. He's still a kid, and he was always more loyal to rhaegar personally.

The prose is subpar to meh? Nothing amazing even if I'm being generous and has a tendency to describe things in fanciful language without really considering if its necessary. Looking at you amethyst eyes.

Finally the time skips. Makes me question what the point is to showing his childhood if it's resolved in 2 chapters. Just start us off in the intrigue.

    Agony
In which Theon fails, and in doing so finds truth, peace and gods. He's born and dies and lives. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I usually don't like time travel theon fics because they're typically filled with angst and other tropes I don't like. This is one of the best of that niche genre I've found though. 3/5 I'd say, it looks like it's abandoned though.

edit: ah damn, I've just gotten to chapter 4 an I might revise my opinion of it. It is pretty angsty
ch.5 - oh damn, I usually don't read ao3 tags this is actually a slash fic

    Well..I'd say its a 2/5 fic tbh.

Those are generally the lines to look out for to know if an author has ANY insight at all into men interacting with each other - if you see that, the answer is a resounding 'no' and you need to run and never look back.

Ok, question. Does anybody know if reverse SI fics (where the character winds up in a modern person's body) are a thing for this fandom?

There's a fic where Tywin Lannister wakes up as 10yo Harry. I don't think it even got to Hogwarts though.

I would be surprised if there aren't some, fics set in modern times make up more than a fifth of the asoiaf fics on Ao3.

The ones I have seen were readable, but not very enjoyable for me. They didn't have horrible spelling or a terrible prose, but usually lacked any interesting plot and mostly focused on the pairing.

So it probably depends on your taste.

What exactly is the appeal here? I can understand self-inserting, you want to be part of some other world for whatever reason - the setting itself is most of the time the main appeal for doing so - but this kind of thing just doesn't seem like it would be appealing to anyone.

Depends if you want that Robb Stark Romance but don’t care for the setting, I reckon. Or something similar.

I'm pretty sure it's all just ways to write 'romance' stories using the names of characters from asoiaf.
