    Part of the same writer's club, too. IIRC, they hated each other. From what I've read Tolkien called C.S. Lewis' work simplistic garbage, while Lewis thought Tolkien was long-winded, tedious and pretentious.

    Hate is a bit of a strong word. They hated each other's works, but their relationship was one of mutual respect. Heck. Tolkien was the one who was responsible for CS Lewis's conversion to Christianity.

    Ah, didn't know that about his conversion. I just remember reading a Tolkien biography years ago that talked about how frequently the club meetings degenerated into rather acrimonious arguments between the two over their work.
