When is Vaimes not just doing a Vaimes-y thing?

Then why would asking him why I'm a townread result in anything other than "because Para is my friend bffs for life"?

Right, but that's my point. Your initial reaction that it was him being genuine instead of making up a reason to townread her, even though what he said sounded weird.

Because I don't hold Vaimes to that expectation.

It's page 4, my dude. I don't have any reads at all, much less a wolfread.

And it's possible you know each other well enough to understand him correctly right away, but I think a villager might read the post and approach asking him about it differently.

The honest answer is that I have you and Vaimes ever so slightly above rand. The answer to the question "When is Vaimes not doing Vaimes-y things" is obviously, "When he's mafia" which makes his play so far ~villagery. That's a metaread I would probably take as far as page 10 or so, at which point I start looking for actual reasoning to solve his alignment, though he's near dead bottom of my list of slots to solve day 1.

It's maybe worth mentioning that Para is not a townread, I don't think the townreads on her make much sense but I don't have too much of a qualm with them either aside from them existing for self-meta / theory stuff that I don't think is ever indicative of anything other than Para's ability to somewhat coherently talk about their town play. Para is more or less on the opposite end of the "to-solve" list to Vaimes, but I'm overly concerned about disagreeing with the reads on her at the moment, people always find someone to give bad townreads to early game and they're correct 75% of the time so I'm currently content with giving the read space. She feels like someone I won't have too hard of time solving with enough content and interactions from her.

"Less than 24 hours into day 1" also works, if you want something more universal.

Isn't 75% the rand chance of hitting a town in the general pool of players?

Why would that make you reluctant to engage Para as opposed to any other random player, who would presumably also have a 75% shot of being town?

    That's the point, yes.

I'm not reluctant. I think you misunderstood. I don't think there's much point nitpicking over reads that don't have much basis to them.

Aren't those the best reads to nitpick though?

My question was half meme and half serious; I appreciate the response.

With Vaimes, I have no real meta on him besides having played in several games around here where everyone locks him as villager about three hours into d1, so that's not something I hold very tightly either way.

I think our philosophies differ a little with regards to reads-- while I don't believe it at all productive to call out every single pointless read one person makes on another, especially in the low-stakes environment of d1, lazy or groundless village leans can essentially seed more serious village reads when they really shouldn't, which is something I'm particularly cautious of in an environment like this. Is the Para thing something that needs to be discouraged? Probably not. But I also don't fully agree with the approach of "just let reads fly, it's d1 and they're probably all rand anyway."

Describe to me what Vaimes-y things are? I think the worst thing for wolf!Vaimes, is that his reads feel fabricated, while if he is town, I can kind of getting the feeling he believes them. He is sheeps his vote a lot as a wolf

It feels good to be in a game where the players discuss their reads and approaches in such depth.

By the way, I do actually like what I see from Vaimes’ read on Cobalt. Would like to see more development from Cobalt on that front.
