Many fanfictions mention stasis charms that are utilized for keeping food (mainly I think) fresh, however as far as I can tell this is not Canon and there is no mention of ways to keep food fresh in Canon (I don't have it handy to quote, but I think there are some descriptions of potion ingredients in Snape's classroom being kept in jars or something).

Keeping food fresh is an issue humanity has tried to tackle since ancient years, and it seems logical that it'd be a problem that wizards would also try to solve some way.

So stasis charms, yay or nay? Or maybe there's a different way of keeping food from rotting. Or is it a problem wizards didn't need to solve because...?

 

I doubt there is a statis charm, since one problem the trio had to deal with in the Deathly Hallows was that food was going bad.

Hermione's attempt to make moldy bread fresh again was also unsuccesful despite a variety of transfiguration spells she attempted, so it's likely not possible for the vast majority of wizards either.

Personally the way I imagine it wizards would use more indirect magic to achieve the preserve the food, so they would rather use magic to regularly create a ice keep food fresh than some general coolnes charms, similarly to how they use magic to light fires when they're cold instead of using some warming charm.

Yeah, we know that warming charms exist so it makes sense the opposite would. A box with a chilling charm on it is effectively a refrigerator or freezer depending on how cold it goes.

 

We actually dont, the closest thing in canon is a spell that blasts hot air out of the wand and is occasionally used to dry clothes.

 

They have a spell to turn your wand into a hair dryer, and a spell to heat water to boiling instantly. We don't know the incantation for either, I was working on the assumption that its the same spell applied slightly differently, and was using the term "warming charm" to refer to that. Apologies if using a common fanon term confused things.

 

Alternate tack - wizards use magic to cut down on the logistics between food manufacturer and eating it. Everything wizards eat is fresh, often taken out of the ground / slaughtered / picked that very day.

 

Alternate tack #2: “house elf magic”

 

Of everything suggested in the thread, actually I like this solution the best I think. There's next to no cost in time and very limited cost in money for transportation. A basket with an extension charm on it and apparation mean you can get your days food extremely easily.

And the exact same methodology could be used by market owners, or if they can't go apparating around enough to get all the stock then the floo would be just as viable.

 

That would be so amazingly useful...pretty much the next best thing to a Trek replicator.

 

There is also this scene in Chamber of secrets.

McGonagall pretty created a refilling plate of sandwiches, considering Gamp's Law it was likely directly connected to the kitchen, it probably wouldn't be hard to set something like that up with Vendors like Sorrow suggested.

 

Incidentally, manufacturing magical iceboxes is how the Greengrass family made their fortunes, and is the reason for Daphne's nickname.
