Is this 'make you jump' horror or is it more supernatural/horror suspense? I don't particularly care for the former.

Without spoiling, I wouldn't call it much of a either. Some jump scares here and there, some suspense, but nothing clearly defined. The horror aspect of the show is definitely secondary.

The Queen's Gambit on Netflix is a really excellent series. Even more enjoyable if you know how to play chess and have participated in that tournament atmosphere.

Just watched yesterday and today, and it was quite enjoyable, indeed.

p.s. the musical score was superb.

3 episodes in and this is turning out to be fairly meh when held in comparison to Castlevania. The fight scenes are pretty cool and that's about it. After Trevor Belmont, I'm not sure why they decided to go with a main char that is just beyond bland.

It was a nice surprise seeing Dudley in The Queen's Gambit.

I detected the faintest hint of an English accent in his first appearance, and I thought, "Let's see if he's actually English," and he was. Then I saw it was fucking Dudley. He did good, showing his inadequacy, vulnerability, ladida.

    Great set and 'costume' design.

Excellent use of side characters, most with distinct personalities such that they feel "real enough", to show us more of Beth. I'm not sure why we started the series in the future when she's already in Paris. I wish I didn't know she was hooked on the little green pills before we were shown her getting hooked in the orphanage. Would've been more impactful, like woah wtf?

The last time I was this pleased with a show was Patriot

Got to the final episode and I'm impressed I was able to manage it. Animation is good. Music is good. Fights are good. Greek myth stuff is always neat. Everything else is hot garbage.

The writing just went full trash tier. Plot points are contrived, disjointed and jump from one to the next with barely any time to breathe. Other than the villains, the characters have little to no personalities. They have dialogue that makes no sense with what's going on onscreen. Characters are privy to information they shouldn't be privy to, and are highly prone to exposit every detail of the story.

    4/10

I liked this a lot. It reminded me a bit of Russian Doll, not really tone / content-wise, but just the basic structure of it being a strong female lead, short run of episodes, and a very cohesive storytelling spine.

I think what I liked most about it was that it refused to do the cheap narrative gimmick you see so often in stuff like Casino Royale - "over twenty meelion in ze pot" type stuff. With the notable exception of one time at the very end, there's almost no "two characters turn to each other to explain the stakes/position of a game being played" shit. You get all that you need to get from the cadence, from the camera cuts, from the expressions of the two players, and from the music. That's just some very basic trust-your-audience shit that sadly a lot of shows/films fail at.

Anyway. Good show. Watched the whole run in a couple days. Some minor quibbles with it - I really wished that when
Benny said sex was off the table, it actually was and they didn't end up sleeping together
. And the ending didn't quiiiiiite land for me, though it was close.

But I will say that in the second to last episode when
Beth finds the janitor's board with all her news clippings
    it fucking got me good.

    9/10 would recommend.

    I just finished watching zerozerozero.

Its a really good show. Nearly on par with the first season of Narcos.

I especially loved it due to its global nature.

Drug dealing shows/movies are often bound to one region. This show deals with nearly five regions and it all feels cohesive.

My only quibble is that the show heavily relied on a certain gimmick to tell some aspects of its story and the 3rd time they used it, I couldn't help but groan in disappointment.

    Have you seen Gomorrah too?

Created by the same team. I prefer it to zerozerozero.

Gotten pulled into the mentalist. It’s a pretty good show if a bit dated.

interesting to watch a cop show from pre our current culture

God...the Mentalist is a blast from the past. I remember watching that when I was in uni. It was good, though I think I gave up around season 5 or 6.

    Amazon Prime.

my mom recommended stating that it wraps up its loose ends nicely. They were able to give it a proper ending with seven seasons.
I’m only on season two (so no spoilers pls lol) at the moment but it’s definitely a show from a simpler time.

if I had to say anything about it, the word I would use is fun. It’s not groundbreaking. It’s Your stereotypical smartest guy in the room solves crimes, but...it’s just fun to watch.

Yeah, I don't recall there being any issue with it in particular that made me drop it. I think I was a bit burned out on the genre, there was just so many of those "smartest guy in the room solves the crime" shows for a few years.
