Aside from the popularity of witcher... DRM.
There are a lot of people who hate DRM enough that offering them a DRM-free alternative will earn their absolute fucking undying brand loyalty.

CDPR's brand image is a combination of them consistently producing good games (of the three Witcher games, the first one is by far the worst and it's good, if unexceptional), and GOG. The first is a big winner because so much of the industry is happy to just throw out complete drek and not give a shit (see: Anthem, Assassin's Creed: Another One, etc), so a company that actually consistently delivers quality is almost automatically in the upper echelons in most gamers' minds.

And the second is big because GOG's business model is very nearly literally "we're Steam, if Valve wasn't evil". They get the nostalgia boost from selling old games people really like and getting them to run on modern machines, plus a significantly customer-friendlier refund and DRM policy for all the modem games. GOG, alone, has earned CDPR functionally infinite good will among the audience.

I'm kinda curious if they're gonna piss it all away with Cyberpunk.

Honestly, depends on if the game is shit or not. If the game is at least an 8.5 or above, it won't super hurt them in the long run.

If it's a 9 or higher people will call it the greatest game of all time.

8 or lower and you're going to see more disgruntled people.

They've definitely expended some of the good will with the constant delays and crunch (though how many average consumers even know about this?) but if the game is good it won't matter.

Also, it's absolutely hilarious how just a few days back Cyberpunk 2077 was a top seller on Steam and now it's fallen down the list.

Better if they delay and make it better than release a half-assed product (like some certain games that we all know about).

As butthurt as I still am that CDPR made this more and more exclusively a first person shooter (which I really just don't enjoy at all), I still trust them as a company. They've earned that trust and I generally take them at their word. If they say the delay is due to an issue with current gen final optimization, it very likely is just that.

Even if they have to delay the PS4 and xbone versions to next year, I expect they will release the PS5, XBsX, and PC versions before Christmas no matter what. And the reason is mainly because there has never been a better time to make money on video games. We have a new gen, a holiday season, and a pandemic keeping everyone bored at home and looking for escapes. CDPR is a 1-game-at-a-time company that is looking to rapidly expand. There was talk somewhere about quickly doubling their developer numbers post CP2077. While they may be racking up decentlylarge net profits each year, I don't see them meeting that expansion goal if they release their biggest most expensive game ever in q1/q2 2021 and thus miss the inaugural next gen holiday buying craze.

I really doubt 3 weeks of extra time is going to make those work.

I really hope they don’t hold the PC version back because of 2013 era hardware.

When you put it that way, there is no way that a game of this scale planned on PC should be possible to play on a seven years old console. I'm suspecting that their mistake was to not start with a console version to plan around the limits like RDR2 did, but did everything that was possible on the newest computers and then tried to put it on a current generation.

I suspect their real mistake was not announcing several months ago that the game was now next-gen/PC exclusive. Sure it’d piss a bunch of people off and leave a lot of money on the table from people that can’t afford to upgrade, but then they also wouldn’t be in the situation they’re in currently. I guess we’ll find out December 10th.

Last episode of Night City WIre came out on the 19th instead of Cyberpunk.

In other news, I’ve just realised that my PC isn’t actually up to spec for the minimum requirements. Three weeks to order and install a few parts.

At least it will be super pretty.

Apparently, some people stole copies of Cyberpunk 2077, the PS4 version, and are already playing the game and uploading videos, so watch out for spoilers.

Edit: Also, /v/ found out the guy's name, address and everything about him just from his stream. God, I love autists.
