I think the bigger problem would be that a wizard wouldn't be able to conjure up a shield fast enough to counter a speeding bullet much more than the shield just not working against bullets at all.

Without wanting to get into the realms of wizard vs muggle debates, that really comes down to taking the wizard by surprise. If they feel threatened, if they see the gun, then there's really no way for the muggle to hurt them.

And I don't believe it's unreasonable to say that muggle guns are an extremely effective weapon against wizards. In any conflict, I'd imagine the wizards would very quickly realize that the imperius, polyjuice and apparition are a significantly more effective use of magic than its more destructive properties.

    Hear, hear! (Emphasis is mine.)

It's one of my pet peeves as well. I'd say that every shield has a chance to stop something, but some are better than others in particular categories / at particular tasks.

I hate canon compliant stories. I really have no interest in reading things where I know how it’ll end.

You seem to misunderstand the term. Canon compliant doesn't mean telling the same story, it means telling a story that is compatible with canon. Be that by focusing on side characters or by taking up the narrative after canon's end.

Yeah, the term is canon rehash. I do agree with @Puzzled , even if they didn't use the correct/appropriate wording.

Edit: or maybe they meant Marauders era and the like; canon compliant fics where we know the ending (dying for Harry). In that case, I agree.

Today's pet peeve for me is the astounding understanding of psychology fanfic authors have.

Harry is abused? There are scars and flinching, and not knowing his own worth. If he's angry, it's only because he's hiding the pain.

Harry is driven? Of course we'll get at least a chapter or six of "woe is me, I need to keep everyone away". There's no other way to be driven.

Post-war Harry? He has PTSD, of course, and it presents itself and sadness, closed-offness and knowing how to deal with adoring masses. Alternatively, he has survivor's guilt, which presents itself as blaming himself for every death. And it's called "PTSD" to show that author knows psychology, and is totally not writing angst crap-fest, where research consisted of reading ten other crap angst/hurt/comfort stories.

    ---

The other pet peeve I have is with slash. More and more, when I see somebody discuss slash - on r/hpff, etc - it's mentioned how "slash ff helps people deal with their own insecurities/growing questions", and I always believe it for a few seconds, until I remember that 99% of slash I've read is basically "angst until somebody tops Harry and all is well, because it's cute".

I mean psych fundamentally doesn't make sense, so I would expect people wouldn't understand it, or their understanding of it would be something that's just elaborate bullshit interpretations of rational human behavior. I have heard literally the exact same things from licensed professionals and would not be at all surprised if today's professionals were yesterday's fanfic writers. The reason Harry behaves in ways that are counter to how he behaved in canon is because that's what the author wants to have happen. It's just as much wish fulfillment as the slash fics are.
Come to think of it, my new pet peeve for the day is slash fics not being tagged as slash fics.

I'm not saying it has to be an elaborate essay on results of abuse of young adults, necessarily, but would like if it the personality would be something more creative than "flinches when touched". Or otherwise, if taken away while young, he wouldn't flinch because of that one year with dursleys ten years ago.

I suppose if fics had an interest in exploring the abuse angle from a lens other than hurt/comfort angst or romance, then they might have a shot at delivering something realistic.

I’d honestly rather read a Harry who is unrealistically unfazed from the war/“Dursley abuse” than yet another PTSD character exploration. That’s not to be dismissive of the effects of trauma, just that way too many stories want to incorporate it in some way and I’m kind of sick of reading about it.

I wish they'd be more post-war fics dealing with a Draco character arc, that doesn't end with draco/harry pairing, but where they simply learn to respect each other as friends/colleagues.
After a while it feels like Draco redeems himself just because he wants to shag Harry, which doesnt make him less of a shitty person.

Haridard sounds like the name of an Ogre. Harini just sounds like knock off Nagini.

Not sure which one I hate more.

This fanfic favorite to show “passion” never fails to amuse me, bringing back memories of teenage years.

Okay, I've got another one. We all know that a huge swath of people are just fanatical about Hermione, and I assume a fair amount of the guys that write smut scenes with her are probably doing it because of Emma Watson.

So why do they so often feel the need to make Hermione super curvy? Big 'thicc' booty and DD cup breasts-- how is that in any way fitting of either the books' plain jane Hermione or Emma Watson, who is maybe a B cup at most? You might as well be fantasizing about some random porn chick at that point.
