Baba is a woman in the same way that "rabies-ridden mutt" is a dog, I suppose.

As for kutasinska, you'd have to ask a translator, but kutas means cock.

One of my best memories of a school trip to Washington in 2007ish is of my 16 year old classmate approaching a group of Texan guys outside of the hostel we were staying at. His aim was to nab a cigarette off one of them.

What he said was "Yo can I bum a fag?"

For a solid ten seconds it looked like he might get shot. Luckily one of them was a fan of British TV. Much laughter was had.

They were also fascinated by 50p coins for some reason.

The shape, maybe? Perhaps American coins are always round.

You stayed in a 'hostel' in the US? Dear God, I'm so sorry. Compared to Europe, the US doesn't have any services geared to young, foreign visitors at all. And I mean, AT ALL. I'd never even heard the word until I went to Europe. You must have stayed in a converted Days Inn. The actual US equivalent of a hostel is a crack house in Philadelphia.

The wording is just so perfect.

We have what are called motels all over the place in NZ. They're not fancy hotels, but they're a solid room, ensuite and kitchenette. When I was in the US, I was looking for some places like these, and the first review I read was complaining about bullet holes in the walls. ...I decided that Airbnb's were the way to go.

I've stayed at tons of motels in my life here in America, but I've never seen one with bullet holes. I'd bet you have to go to a seriously cracked out ghetto motel to find that.

In all honesty it always makes me laugh how violent foreigners think it is here. I mean, statistically, yeah it's way more violent, but it's a big country and outside of specific areas well known for crime, it really isn't much more unsafe than anywhere else. I've lived in some pretty redneck- and gun-infested areas (and a couple of those high-crime areas too) over the years, but I've probably only heard gunshots fired in anger once or twice (and even then, from a great distance). And by "fired in anger," I mean that I wasn't near a gun range and it wasn't a holiday (like the 4th of July) where rednecks like to pop off a couple of rounds into the sky under the cover of fireworks, so I'm assuming it was crime-related.

I did a mixture of hostels and hotels when I visited you lot in the US years ago. It wasn't too bad, really. Nobody tried to steal my stuff and I hung out with a couple of people from South America that were pretty cool. I may have just got lucky though.
